Helena, who would be 110 now , used to say “it’s kind of like a figure eight “- she was starting to teach the intermediate area of bowing. The bow is straight, so I couldn’t understand what she meant but that didn’t stop her. Also with regard to the raising of the wrist and the use of the fingers when doing a whole bow , as you explain in your smooth bow changes video : “You see, all these little finger joints need to start to get involved,” she would say, sweetly. After 40 years I begin to understand. Now that you explain it , better than Helena, but just as sweetly. Thank you again , Joy Lee 😀

Yes you can! As long as you keep a consistent contact point. But it will always depend on the piece your playing and what sound you're going for. Always experiment and try to find the best way that works for you. 😊

Yes you can Jub8891! Depending on the tempo and types of strings changes, the degrees of the right elbow can change, but in general you can use this in most of the repertoires. Happy violin playing!

Thank you. Doing this stopped my unintended bouncing bow. Why are we taught to stay parallel to develop hard to change stiff and ridged technique at first? I heard a teacher say once that it was his job to put himself out of a job and that's what he would be doing and that was a very good thing. I don't know if he was being sarcastic or not, but why do we always hear to keep it parallel at first?

Thanks Shiloh. So glad to hear this was helpful to you :) Many instructions for beginner violinists are much simplified so that the students don't feel overwhelmed. But soon later all violinist should be exposed to the necessity and importance of flexible bowing with flexible bow grip and flexible LH hold. Happy violin playing!

@@JoyLeeViolin I can't vibrato because I can't hold the violin without pinching the neck with my left thumb and first finger. It becomes impossible for me on the G string but I realize in higher positions, the vibrato mainly comes from pushing down perpendicular to the fingerboard instead of up and down the neck as the general motion suggests in lower positions. I've played violin for over a decade and I still can't do it. Thanks for your instruction. You're the best!

I do the figure 8 bowing but I do it the other way around. Is that wrong?

The right elbow should be a bit forward at down bow , not reverse, because it will help the bow to keep on the correct angle in upper half bow. ( Otherwise the sound will suffer). I hope you can try it yourself. Happy violin playing!

Hi Emmanuel, regarding having better control over semi tone has to do with having flexible LH frame which will allow LH to move and adjust as needed.
