Informative video. It’s worth mentioning that heavier skaters can use a shallower hollow, and hard ice needs a deeper one. Synthetic ice needs a deeper hollow too.

This is a really interesting video. I really think the quality of the sharpening is more important than the actual ROH. I say this because I just brought my Edea skates to a pro shop in Frankfurt where they even sharpen for Olympic skaters. With this ultra precise cut, I find that I don’t need a very deep ROH at all. In fact, I like how it is right in the middle and gives me good grip but also a really decent amount of glide. I suggested he go up to a “deeper” cut and he recommended against it. I am at a 5/8” ROH and extremely happy with it. It’s interesting how personal it is for each skater! I just love having the extra speed and would worry that a 1/2” would already be too sticky and slow me down. I am a skater who skates with quite deep edges by the way. Only doing single jumps at the moment and pretty nice one foot spins.

This is like the first solid video I have seen on sharpening figure skates. Most vids are on hockey skates. Good info here and I can not say this guy is doing anything wrong. Great equipment and total respect that he is humble about it too. Non of the figure skate coaches at my rink can answer any questions about figure skate sharpening. Its always the same 1/2 inch. What you said makes total sense. Our ice is on the colder side too so I think I deeper cut you be more helpful.

You are welcome! Make sure you always know what hollow to ask for and then first thing you want to do is try a one-foot glide on each skate to make sure you can glide straight. If you pull to one side or the other they may have over sharpened one edge.

Thank you for this very informative video. I have a quick question, I just bought my first pair of skates, I'm still a beginner. I have noticed a small nick on the inside of one blade, at the bottom where the sharp edge should be. Can this be corrected with sharpening or should I return the skates? I could only see in the video that the bottom of the blades get sharpened, but not the sides. Thank you!
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 4 жыл бұрын
It is the bottom of the blade that gets hollowed out, most nicks get sharpened out that way. if you are very careful, you may be able to use a hand stone to polish out the nick, but without seeing it, I can’t say for sure.

I use snowplow stops and t-stops at the boards to help dull my blades just a bit after a sharpening. Also, the adjustment to sharpened skates shouldn't take that long (like maybe a single FS session) if you get them sharpened regularly.

How much does it cost to get your skates sharpened. Also the cost for lessons for a person like me (I have some experience but nothing to pro) and skate guards. What kinda are better? Plastic ones? Thank uuu!!
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 3 жыл бұрын
It’s hard to give a good answer since cost on things varies from rink to rink and coach to coach. At my rink, sharpening skates is $15, private lessons at my rink range from $35 to $54 for a half hour lesson. For skate guards, you definitely want a plastic pair, these are a good all-size pair... amzn.to/3hfVPNb

I just got fitted with a new boot after years away from skating. I had a used blade put on it (pro said it looked like it was in petty good shape). I feel a wobble on just my left skate particularly on an outside edge or when picking up a little speed with crossovers. Do you know what could cause a feeling of wobble moving cross the ice. It’s not my body, just my foot! They took down the sharpness of the left blade a bit but that didn’t solve it.
@CoachJulia

hmm. It’s hard to say what could be causing that, all I can say is that I feel like I have had a similar experience when my edges weren’t sharpened level. so one edge ended up lower than the other and it caused me to feel unsteady on one edge. perhaps take a level to the blade and check?

What do you do if the pro shop messed up your sharpening? Do you just go get it re-sharpened? And about how long can a blade last before it needs to be replaced (not based on number of sharpenings, but time)?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 3 жыл бұрын
if your sharpening was messed up, say, one edge is hugger than the other, a good technician can fix that with an new sharpening. if they put a dent before your toe pick then that can’t really be repaired. So it depends on the situation. I can’t really give you a length of time, as every skater skates different. I used to skate 4 hours a day 5 days a week, which means my sharpenings needed to be pretty frequent. If you only skate once a week then they will last much longer.
@postasiuk

Could you specify what is a dent before the toe pick? I’m worried this happened to my skates now. They’re more shaved closer to the toe pick on the rocker.

Ik I’m a few months late, but I have a question. My brother used to take ice skating lessons, but he used hockey skates and I’m using figure skates. He told me that after sharpening your blades, you shouldn’t go right to skating. You should sharpen skates a few days prior to actually going out to skate. Is this true? I’d believe him, but he only took 2 skating lessons then he quit because he wasn’t having fun, so idk how accurate everything he says is. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m a new skater. Also, thank your for this video! It gave me a lot of insight and needed information.

You only want to sharpen to a point where you can still avoid damaging the toe pick in the process. If you are sharpening on a machine that has a spinning wheel, like the one in this video, you just want to get that wheel as close to the toe pick as possible, without hitting it. If you are doing it by hand, with a hand stone, you can get all the way up to the Toe Pick.

How important is it to not have the end of the blade rounded off? The place I took my skates to for sharpening rounded the end off?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia Жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh, I have had that happen. It's awful. They basically are giving you a hockey blade cut.
@melaniemoore2221

@@CoachJulia I'm assuming that can't be corrected? I have the Jackson Elles so would I be able to go elsewhere and get a new set of blades if that's the case?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia Жыл бұрын
@@melaniemoore2221 it cannot be corrected. You either have to try and live with it for a time, or purchase a new pair of blades and have them mounted. The old holes will need to be filled before they put the new blades on.

I have always been curious if figure skaters ever need to get their toe picks sharpened, or if that is just a sign that your blades need to be replaced.
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia Жыл бұрын
No, just the blades. The toe picks will slowly dull over time, but there really isn't anything that can be done about it.

Beware! Just because a rink has a “pro shop”, it doesn’t necessarily mean they know how to sharpen FIGURE skates. They may even tell you they can, then proceed to give you a hockey skate sharpening. My sister took 5 pairs of high quality skates to a rink in her new neighborhood, since she couldn’t find someone who was a skate expert. Ignored the clues that their skate shop was 95% hockey related. Sure enough, all the skates had awful, no hollow finishes, and almost ruined. Wasted about $100. Finally found an expert where I live in NJ who repaired the damage. Make sure you get recommendations from figure pros!

so the competitive ones are on ice more than 10 hrs a day, does that mean they get their blades sharpened every other day????
@lizzy5812
@lizzy5812 4 жыл бұрын
That's not very accurate. They might train that many hours a day but more than half the training is off the ice doing ballet, cardio, jumps, plyometrics etc.
