You can see the amount of work and research put into this video ! It's unfortunate that it hasn't gained much traction yet. Very informative as i am watching the Olympics mens SP tonight and would love to be able to asses their performances live on the ice !

Thanks, Sean! I would honestly rather that people that are really interested watch it! I've found that over time quality videos do get traction. Thanks for watching and commenting!

The 6.0 scoring was more fun to engage in, especially because the system was used for so long across many sports. Now, even thanks to your incredibly clear explanation, you have to be a skating genius to make sense. (I'm not a skater but like watching it.)

I appreciate how you explained the history and the 2002 Olympics scandal! Makes you wonder how that would go down today

IMO = I think we'll see some changes again soon. Again, due to the Olympics. We'll have to wait and see what happens!

I totally agree with you.I have done figure skating my who life and cannot fully understand it so what chance do the general public have.Shame on the judges for ruining the more simplified scoring system.Great video👍

IJS is actually much better for skaters and coaches to know how they can improve. But 6.0 was easier for spectators to follow 😉

Thank you again for factual reporting, it's made the skills effectively, efficiently, and accurately on the tablet of the score. As long as the scoring is fair, I am okay but I don't understand when a competitor had fallen: first received a red mark, then change to a green mark. Does that mean the level of difficulty cause the grade of execution to change from red to green mark? Is it true that if a jump is over rotated, it would receive a red mark and lower grade of execution? Because I saw that too. Does a competitor have to follow one's program - short and long? And if the competitiors change their performance, would that lower the grade of execution?

Each skater receives marks independently. Unlike 6.0, the judges are not comparing the skaters against each other. When an element changes from red to green, it’s because the element was reviewed and the technical panel decided it met the requirements. The scoring is not in real time. That’s why there is a delay between the end of the program and the marks being finalized. I have another video that goes into detail about the technical panel here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmSppKKpp5Kqobc it may help!

Amazing explanations, thank you! I’ve been following professional figure skating ever since the savchenko/massot gold in Pyeongchang, but while I did of course know that higher numbers are better than lower numbers, I never understood the grading system in depth. You just changed that :D

Great video and thank you for the PCS explanation. I need to watch it again and it's like a college course from years ago..The ISU need you as a judge! PCS scores are very confusing and much harder to understand than technical scores. My favorite skater Anastasia Gubanova has made a comeback this season skating for Georgia. She's a beautiful and lyrical skater with beautiful programs this season but she's been super low balled in PCS in my eyes somewhere between 27 and 30 points in the short program all season even when she skates flawlessly. The skater I liken Anastasia most to in terms of skating skills is Karen Chen. In the Olympic team event Nastya skated flawlessly in the short program but received the PCS of only 30 while Karen fell but received a PCS three points higher. Looking at the PCS scoring Karen got 38 scores of 8.25 scores or higher while Nastya only got 3. Karen also received 24 scores of 8.5 points or more and Nastya got 0! Whaaaat? I was shocked that someone could fall and still get such high PCS marks while Anastasia was flawless and her PCS marks were much lower. My friend who was watching the team event short program with me said not only is Karen a more beautiful skater than Nastya her skating skills are at a much higher level the Nastyas too and that's why her PCS scores are always so much higher in the short and free skate. My friend is not a professional like you are so I was hoping you could help me understand this. Can I be mistaking Nastya as beautiful and lyrical skating to automatically mean she should receive Karen Chen like PCS scores? Do beautiful skating and PCS go hand-in-hand? I will be following both of their programs at the Olympics I hope they both skate clean and I'll see if Karen still beat Nastya in PCS by wide margin in both skates like she always does. Thanks Aimee for this informative video I will watch it again today so I can understand it even better. I need to because figure skating is one of the few sports I still like and I want to understand it better than I do.

You're welcome! Have you watched my videos that explain the components too? If not, you can find the playlist here: kzbin.info/aero/PLhIvo-BmGcaUwXwH_vS7_vZxHOLX-WSNI Unfortunately, coaches cannot judge as that would not be fair. Also, unfortunately, judges are unpaid volunteers. So, I could not switch from coaching to judging and still make a living. Additionally, I wouldn't be able to do these videos if I were a judge as there are strict social media policies for judges.

@ I will watch more thank you. I do not want you to have any conflict of interest. The PCS issue is real for a lot of figure skating fans to see some beautiful skaters get low PCS scores and some get high scores. I also wonder if the 6.0 scoring system would be better for my favorites than the scoring system now that allows the technical giants to dominate.
