At this year's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, we may see quad corks in Big Air Snowboarding or in Freestyle Skiing -- and we'll see quad twists and quad jumps in Figure Skating. But have we reached the limit of what's possible? To do a quad, a skater's got less than a second to turn their body four times in the air. WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez set out to find out why five...is almost impossible.

@@belawood ya ikr. Some of those girls are lucky enough to keep their body though. Like there was this one girl at the four continents that we watched today and she is 18 and her body shape is very thin, so I'm not surprised she can do all her jumps lol. But yeah the body shape is very important I agree, cause sometimes it makes things more difficult/ easy than for other people.

Well according to Yuzuru Hanyu there is an athlete that could possibly jump a quint and that's Boyang Jin. He's even anticipating the day he will see Boyang Jin jump a quint. Despite what science says, Yuzu's belief in Boyang Jin is greater.

@themannwithaplan You've seen people do quad axels? Pleople as in plural for person? As in: several individuals? Please tell me more about that, because nobody has even TRIED a quad axel in competition yet, because it's that hard. Maybe in shows or training with more or less success, but unless it hasn't been done under competitive circumstances, it doesn't count. Land that thing in a programm and get showered with points and your name engraved into figure skating history.

perhaps because of all the jumping going on in the recent years, their component now weighs heavily on the technical score (together with other tes elements) which is the undeniable "sports-like" stuffing of figure skating, so even the most snobbish and picky audience that would otherwise say this sport lacks characteristics of an actual sport (ugh) now goes aha, uh-huh, okay. also fs has been increasingly turning into quite a thing to observe and, compared to many other sports, it's evolving at a wild pace and there's this constant element of surprise, numerous world records, etc. so panem et circenses, right. also let's just say this current figure skating generation has brought in many new fans - and many new aspiring young skaters - that's for sure. hence, viewers become invested

I've heard people make light hearted jokes about ice dancing before, but never really figure skating. Even then I never met someone who thought either was easy or didn't involve athleticism. Anyone who's ever tried ice skating before can easily appreciate how ridiculously hard it would be, especially figure skating. Curling on the other hand... not too much respect form an athleticism perspective although I'm sure it takes tons of skill.

@@bone9jdjkaye ??? He has? He does? Hanyu has landed the quad flip plenty of times, although his loop and toe is his most reliable. The lutz is the jump that has a lower success rate - and for everyone else as well. If you were talking about his 2018-19 seasons, then his falls were often on the flip and lutz, but mainly due to the amount of injuries he kept accumulating following Pyeongchan (which he did on pain killers and rehabilitation). Judging by his performance this past japanese nationals, then 2020 was a good year for resting his ankle which he keeps busting. (I say that with love, but also... Ugh. Gonna give someone a heart attack one day)

Don't give Shaun White any ideas he'll want to do that trick, its simple law of physics you have something strapped to your feet which is long and heavy makes you rotate slower than something short and light like ski boot which helps you rotate faster. Bigger higher jumps for snowboarders and skiers will feel like landing on concreate you can only go so high.
@mikhaillastname8719
@mikhaillastname8719 6 жыл бұрын
basically, you don't feel like landing on concrete on big air. the proper landing has a steep angle so you are more sliding it then putting yourself to a stop. therefore big kicker might be even smoother for you than small ones that have flatter landing.

@@montserrat8519 2 years later me speaking. That’s a good observation because now that I’m doing backspins I realize a lot of things. I think the reason people who don’t skate are gravitated towards back spins is the the movement of putting your inside leg up already moves you in the correct direction for spinning (unless maybe your left handed). The natural edge you tend to lean on when your inside foot is up curves you the right way compared to front spins. Also in dance you do “back spins” too.

After just watching the standing jump episode I think it would be very important to build leg muscles to jump higher. The 90 cm would give twice the time to spin.
@BriefNerdOriginal
@BriefNerdOriginal 6 жыл бұрын
A solution might be in increasing the time instead of the rotation speed. Provided a jump can be made that lasts about 1/4 more of the current time, this would be roughly sufficient to keep the same rotation speed and accomplish a quint. I guess that for professional skiers it should be easier to obtain, as they heavily rely on the shape of the slopes to achieve the desired jumping times.

I’m assuming they mean within the limits of the professional laws of their sport. So whatever ramp height is standard for professional snowboarding is what they’re using. Just as figure skaters could potentially spin more if they jumped up off ice and were able to land in a lower level hole. But that’s silly. We use the standards the sport provides for us to compare.
