When you say 3 dc, is that 1 dc for the “side” of the square plus 2 dc to fill the square? I’m still learning the math of filet and it is confusing. Are you making mesh squares with one or 2 chains between posts? Or how many chain stitches are you skipping in the starting chain before placing a double crochet (after the initial turning chain) in row one?

Filet Crochet math is definitely confusing. On occasion I still mess up the count myself so I end up improvising. So when I say 3 dc I mean 3 dcs will be the square itself. If you're using 2 the math is a bit different. So I'm always using 3 to fill in the square, with the mesh it is chain 1, skip one, double crochet. So that would be 2 for the mesh, you got it. In row one, if it is a mesh, I'm gonna go ahead and skip 4, because the way I do it, I count the loop on the hook as the chain 1. So that means I need that plus 3 chains as the "height". Simply put I will go in to the 4th chain from the hook. Now for a solid, I will just go in to the 3rd chain from the hook. This counts as my first dc. That seems long winded, but I really hope that helps. I'm sure there's a lot of ways to do it, but this is just the way I found to be less complicated. If I didn't explain something please let me know, I'm brand new at tutorials so I'm trying to improve my wording and such :) Edit: needed to clarify something
