Pinoy fighting techniques are rarely known to those outside the military because they aren't for show. They are effective and deadly. Special forces practice these techniques and they are very effective martial arts

Outstanding work! Great explanation along with a fluid demonstration showing its practical application. I read some foolish comments from "sport MMA" fans who [obviously] have no background in military combatives,no combat infantry service or couldn't have worked in law enforcement. No way. Sport play vs the streets are as different as night and day.

psyhomir Yes, I got excited. I appreciate your respectful comment as well. This clip features outstanding teaching. He has taken a very complex set of moves and [explained] step-by-step the principles, what's taking place in that combat flow and why. If peoples actually LISTEN to the man...they'll agree. [By the way, it's obvious that English is his second language! And still, he articulated in remarkable fashion what's going on.

sorry, but i'd rather listen to people who actually use this in their day to day life for more than 70 years fighting insurgents and rebel militants and islamic terrorists than listen to keyboard warriors and internet trolls who have never experienced what its like to have your life hang in the balance and to feel death's cold dark glare staring right at your face! so i dont care how many mma fights you've won or how many guys you forced into submission or how many guys you've knocked out cold, its totally a different ball game when you're in a dark humid jungle and your enemies want to cut your head off just because their god said so!

To put it simple... both Silat and FMA (Arnis/Kali/EsKrima) shared a similar mother arts in the pre-colonial past. Therefore it means that both Martial arts are sister arts or related arts and should never have animosity among its practitioners. Just like Muay Boran and Muay Thai, both of which are related arts.
@bobby657711 жыл бұрын
Depending on which dialect you are using. Tagalogs called it Arnis. Visayans called it Eskrima and further down south and the U.S., they call it Kali.

clearly this guy is really good. its people like him that help make the filipino arts one of the most deadly and effective martial arts in the world. they incorperate everything; stick, knife, club, and when you have nothing they incorperate what you have readilly available. thats the beauty of this art.....the fact that it is empty handed and weapon orientated.

Unbelievable skill…looks like someone who has trained in an ultra-high lineage, non-stop to achieve a super- human skill. It's always hoped that deadly skill is combined with true morality, not giving itself to national governments and corporations which definately don't serve the highest good…that's another, related subject but there we go, to me, this clearly is very, very, very high fighting skill indeed, far and away beyond almost anything we see elsewhere...

its amazing how many will discredit this video in various ways yet when it really comes down to it the amount of time served learning and knowing what to do by feel alone will show you more then just in this demonstration video. this is only to show some points and not the actual full use of the art. fma empty hand movements are mainly used to buy you time to draw your blade and end the situation. not to go just hand to hand. its a blade culture based art.

@phiAndpi10 жыл бұрын
***** What I'll say about MMA is if this stuff worked you'd see it in it
@seric454610 жыл бұрын
phiAndpi That's ridiculous, MMA is a sport with sportsmen who are not trying to break each other. When is the last time somebody got killed or even went out of the octagon on a stretcher? The Philippines is made up of over 7000 islands and these fighting methods have been used in countless engagements in tribal warfare for centuries. I'm an MMA fan too (who participates and trains with MMA fighters as well as in Kali) but the people who seem to think it is the ultimate height or evolution of martial arts are completely out of touch with history and reality.
@seric454610 жыл бұрын
Sckarekrow You must not have much confidence in your skills as a martial artist if you feel the need to carry a gun. As someone who has a had a CWL since 1991 I rarely find a need to carry. A gun will only help in a very limited situation and only ads trouble to most. I found myself in a street fight in the mid 90's with a guy who I could have taken apart but had to huddle up and take a bit of a beating because I was carrying a gun that I needed to protect and it was not worth killing some guy for being a drunken fool. MMA is fine but it is a sport and there is no comparison with a ancient fighting art like Kali.
@seric454610 жыл бұрын
Sckarekrow Since you are a fan of guns I suggest you do some research into the origins of the Government Model 1911 .45 acp. This is considered by many the finest Combat handgun in the world (my own personal favorite as well) and was a result of jungle combat during the Filipino American war where guys like dude here came charging at US soldiers with Bolos and the .38 caliber sidearms the soldiers were carrying proved in-adequate in stopping them. If you can find anyone who was there ask them if FMA is bullshit or fantasy.

The beauty of filipino kali and escrima is that it is great for use both with or without weapons. Weapons are thought of as basically an extension of your hands so most of the strikes and blocks and traps that are taught apply for use with knives, sticks, your bare hands, or whatever which makes it easier to master and remember than if you had to learn a specific set of techniques for each kind of weapon. Plus a good deal of what they do even without weapons is illegal in modern day mma rules.

Do u hav techniques applicable like knife fighting inside riding jeepney?
@bladesociety8 жыл бұрын
Hmm, that would be extremely difficult. No room for footwork, very little room for maneuvering. And most probably the assailant would have a wingman. Best I could think of is smothering the guy (and his knife) with my backpack and then pummeling him. But then, his partner might jump in and stab me. If the bad guy just wants money, I'll surely just give it to him and hopefully get home safely.
@jokerjoj.f.42126 жыл бұрын
Well, if you can see the knife, but they haven’t attacked you yet, wrap your arm in clothing and disarm. Or put your backpack between the knife and your torso, use the backpack like a shield and smother the knife hand with it.
@jokerjoj.f.42126 жыл бұрын
Once you’ve got the first guy’s knife with your backpack, sit on him and push against him with your back. That might leave your hands free the deal with a second attacker. There’s a similar principle in jujitsu where you lock your opponents arms with your legs and sit on him, leaving your hands free to deal with the next guy.
@IlokanoWarrior5 жыл бұрын
it's best to put mount the knife in front of jeepney, then kick the opponent outside. Then maneuver opponent in front of jeepney and stab opponent proceeding to drive thru and smash his body throwing it across the road.

i agree! but why did the Philippine government recognized it as a national sport? instead of being a secretly coded martial art. Arnis is supposed to be only taught towards the master's clan members or close relatives

Filipino out of many different combative styles is one of the most practical and reflexive styles I've had the pleasure of learning, and its not inaccessible. Filipino is a fast, speed and reaction based style that does not so much require strength as it does ferocity and frequency of attack and it works regardless of whether you have a knife or not. on a side note if you're doing something strength endurance based like Krav Maga can be sometimes, its a fantastic way to boost up your reflexes.

The first cut is normally across the tendons in the arm holding the weapon. This causes the hand to open effectively dropping the weapon. The next cut is across the jugular in the neck and then a twisting stab to the chest at the heart. All of this happens in about a second. It normally takes the average person 2 seconds or more to pull a gun, cock it , aim and shoot. The old saying about never taking a knife to a gun fight is not always the case.
@genkidesukaxoxo12 жыл бұрын

Another common misconception is that it is like in the movies where you will always see the knife coming and have time to respond to it. A lot of the time it happens so fast you think somebody has simply thrown a punch at you and hit you and you don't even realize you've been stabbed until after it has already happened. Or you are just standing there expecting nothing then suddenly they whip a knife out and slash your throat before you even have time to react.

@TheMofos12314 жыл бұрын
@666WarriorKnight That's why there is something that you call "TRAINING." By training, your body will remember and it will become a reflex. And as a reflex, whenever there is trouble, your body will respond to the stimulus with the reflex. That applies to most martial arts. Just learning/memorizing is not enough. One needs to train to be better.

@alpha009015 жыл бұрын
That;s why this style wants you to break a hell of a lot of bones in your opponents body even though obviously the first 2 steps would suffice. so that in the off chance that your first 2 or 3 moves are deflected or evaded he;ll still be hit by the remaining 3 or 4. It gives you more chances to catch your opponent unlike one hit wonder moves.
@curtisb300015 жыл бұрын
This works with someone of equal height, weight and no street fighting experience. All those breaks would not work on most people especially experienced street fighters. I practice knife fighting but it's extremely realistic and its meant to kill not to hurt. Grapplers will die at the hands of a good knife fighter! He or she will not expose their blade until your in your guard, then they can rip up your intestines and such with ease.

@spartanwarrior1 In short... Filipino Martial Arts and Silat most likely had a similar mother art practiced by the Malay race (people of Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Borneo), but when the Western invaders came and split the land and separated the people, before this borders people (the Malays roamed and exchanged freely amongst ourselves) the Filipinos had to adapt and incorporate new ways into their art to have an answer to the Rapier wielding Spaniards, hence the Split.

@MagicPancake first of all, its not always about breaking someones boes because it doesn't kill as easy as destroying the nervous system.....in eskrima it is more to limb destruction by nerves than bones due to the fact it would be easier than trying really hard to snap someones bone....

In the Phillipines a lot of places most people don't even have guns so more primitive weapons like knives or blunt objects like sticks are probably the best weapons they have. So therefore hand to hand combat or knife fighting skills are a lot more relevant and important to know than here in the United States where all of the cops have guns and most citizens do too. Of course these are still important skills to have in case you don't have time to draw your gun or you happen to be unarmed.

For those thinking that the guy in blue could have used the left arm to punch as the instructor did those moves that would be nearly impossible. For 1 the instructor is too far, 2. his weight is in his punch and is too late to maneuver and second there is a shock after being countered and having a failed punch. -.- For it being used in a REAL situation... well i doubt, IF the enemy is punching.. but Its still really handy when your applying a quick grab. As in REALLY quick

@Hrairoo53 They don't just come from "similar" cultures, but actually the people of pre-Spanish Philippines shared something with that of its fellow Malay countries (Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo), aside from alliances among Rajah's and Datu's in the region, there were also blood relations, for example.. between the people of Visayas and Borneo, this two places had blood/historical ties, Visayans lived in Borneo and vice versa, according to Hose and McDougals book "Pagan tribes of Borneo".

The problem here is that we have diffences in our terminologys. Because in the filipines, the words Kali, arnis and escrima all are used to refer to stickfighting. Where I come from these are names that refer to spacific systems or styles of stick fighting. WHen my grandmaster first came to America and started to teach, his system of fighitng didn't have a name, he just called it escrima. I see that we are actually both correct, hopefully you can see that too.

Another thing to remember is you can't just become an expert by simply watching demos. It takes a long time and a lot of practice to become efficient in any type of fighting or martial arts style. One must be able to learn these techniques to the point where they're in the muscle memory and be able to adapt techniques to whatever situation presents itself in a fight. In any case when you bring weapons into fights, it is unlikely to live long enough to become an expert experienced fighter.
