Well, according to most Catholics, fish is a vegetable, so he should be OK! (Honestly, as a Japanese immigrant in CA, my big familiarity with vegetarian is honestly Buddhism. Not my sect, but many others. Japanese food as it is now would also be pretty difficult as a vegetarian, honestly. Japanese Buddhism stresses raising the livestock kindly and thankfulness for them eventually going to nourish us)
