You mean cxd6 first? Threatening the queen? IMO maybe he worried about ..Qa5, the black queen guard the c3 bishop. Then If Bb6 (try to attack the queen again) Qxa3, Rc1 Bb4. A piece down vs a strong player like duck, even if the extra c n d pawns look nice. Perhaps too risky, moreover with white king's position under fire from the rooks and light square bishop.
