Filipinos React To Son of Former Dictator Becoming President | Street Interview

Recently, the new Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. officially took office, succeeding the outgoing leader Duterte. While he won this year’s presidential election by a landslide, there are many who have worries about him being the new president, given that he’s the son of the former dictator of the Philippines.How do Filipinos feel about their new president and do they fear that elements of his fathers’ dictatorship will make a comeback? Our Asian Boss reporter hit the streets of Manila to find out.

When I lived in the Philippines (2008-2010) all sorts of people in the provinces would said martial law is a disciplined and prosperous time. My parents were in college at that time too. Yung father ko ay pinanganak dito sa Metro Manila while my mother is from Pangasinan pero lumipat sila dito sa Metro Manila noong 1986. Yes, totoong nakakatakot daw, kasi at that time puro talahiban pa ang kamaynilaan at madaming sindikato, maraming ni-rirape na babae. Pero wala silang nasabi na masama about Martial Law, kasi for them protection nila ito. While thinking about it, never silang, lumabag sa anumang batas bilang isang mamamayan, even our relatives ni-isa walang nasabing masama about sa martial law hanggang ngayon. Now, we all have a good and happy life. I think that Martial law is only good if you are a good citizen and a good follower...

Im not gonna counter that marcos camp really did very well in rebuilding their image among the masses- it was so well planned and they were very patient, probably a decade or two of preparation. They’re dangerous but there’s something i would commend about them, theyre way smarter than the previous political camp. But i believe that is 50% of the cause. The other 50% is mostly on an ongoing but unrecognized people’s revolt against LP. Two elections straight with the highest voter turnouts and landslide wins against any LP representative, it says something and marcs simply took advantage at the ripest time and to take sarah as the best image for that revolt. Reality is LP became too overconfident and this is their undoing- media, education-they had the tools to maintain a narrative but it was not enough to fool an ordinary filipino’s human condition. Marcoses are the same as any oligarch, whats important is that we always show the sentiment of the majority whoever sits there, whether that be for the better or worse. If the marcoses are in it for the long game like lp or his father, he better do well and im holding on to this social pressure to guide him rather than his innate “morals” most people tend to believe in

Isn't it the same history that taught us as Cory as the icon of democracy? I have interviewed and helped martial law victims who were raped and tortured multiple times it breaks my heart to see people say that their experiences were made up or fabricated… they lost limbs, family members, and theirselves while the military made them suffer. People MUST validate their information before making a decision

The only way to get correct beliefs is carefully letting observations (evidence) change your mind. There’s no “English” in Tagalog language. They’re literally speaking both English and Tagalog at the same time since it’s easier to use English words than Tagalog sometimes. On the other hand, there are Spanish loanwords that became part of Filipino language, but many of those loanwords already have different meaning. Some of those Spanish loan words actually have their original or “Pure” Tagalog words. For example The word “Government”. In Filipino (Spanish loanwords) you can say “Gobyerno”, while in pure tagalog word it’s “Pamahalaan”.

To give a view on the mindset of the majority of the voters in the Philippines, It's a popularity contest. Doesn't matter if you're a corrupt fat old dude but because they see you on the TV all the time, just make a few false promises and they'd immediately accept you. The Philippines loves a strong leader, strong = manliness so Leni (the opposition) is deemed by many (mostly the old voters) not to be suited because of her being a woman and how disastrous the aquino term was (but the thing is, Ferdinand's last term is already failing the Philippines). Just two points: 1. Clearly, you can see the educational crisis that our country is facing for a long time. Filipinos would rather believe on what they see on social media rather than what they have learned in school, in HEKASI and Social Studies. 2. The people in the video who are for BBM acknowledged, in one way or another, that the Marcoses did something wrong in the past. One man even mentioned that not because Marcos Sr. was a criminal would mean that BBM will also be a criminal. I did stop arguing with kind of issues when i read an article about the Department of Education and Static Board of the Philippines that. In every 6 kids in the Philippines 1 of them didn’t attend School at all, 7 out 10 manage to Finished Primary or Elementary and out of 7 of that 4 finished High School and only 1 continue College or University which were not sure if they can Graduated on the course they choose. Interesting video, I was curious about the perceptions on the ground. In reality, the dynasty already had a firm grip (in the north?) in politics before the presidency so there was a supportive base there already (itself surprising to many outside the country). As pointed out by some interviewees, there were many troubling signals in the lead-up and even in the brief period since. 'Give the son a chance' is a cop out given the circumstances. Nowadays, you don't need an overt lockdown via martial law; you can do more with media control via technology. That and education reform can lock in the next generation. It's good to see both the old and young are aware. I wouldn't tune out, no matter how optimistic one may be inclined to be. As they say.. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, ...

The main problem of the Philippines is the legacy of colonialism and because our country has been at the end of the world from its colonizers (both Spain and the US, though not our neighbor Japan) the legacy of self-colonialism (we always need to cooperate with our colonizers in order for them to colonize us). Colonialsm and self-colonialism have given our politicians the idea that the country is the object of plunder. I hope BBM will break this cycle in his actions (and not just his words), but I have my doubts. His parents plundered the country. I hope BBM has transcended that very real past of criminality.

@@omniyambot9876 Well, martial law's brunt fell on the people in Manila whereas people in the remote provinces experienced it less. Perhaps people identify with the macho style of leadership and don't care who gets trampled in the process (too bad for them). Marcos and his wife made international contacts which led to our labor export. He aslo accelerated transmigration to Mindanao (loyal Ilocanos to counter the Muslims). The funny thing is thatth e poor identify with those who are stealing from them blid. That's really d=sad.

I feel like we should talk about 9:59 I can't help but doubt how an average foreign individual is actually invested (care) about the government leader/politics of other countries, to the point where they would judge a citizen of a country solely based on it. Isn't it more natural to be much preoccuppied or worrying about your own country's politics? Yes especially in europe where their government are extremely connected. I’m actually surprised with how little filipinos know about their fellow south east asian neighbors considering how their economies and histories are intertwined. The average foreigner would care because they don’t want to support a dictator or someone who supports one. This is extremely prevalent when you look at freelancers who put their nationality in their portfolio, there have been multiple filipino artists on twitter voicing their grievances about clients cancelling their orders because of the election. It’s extremely common to not go to a joint because of differing political stances. An example of this would be people refusing to eat at chik fil-a because they support anti gay institutes, or chinese people boycotting companies that even mention taiwan. It isn’t prejudice it’s protest, you won’t give your money to someone who supports an ideology you don’t support.
