It will depend on the generation but some first generation like me are invested into the development of the region as many of us were naturalized here vs being born in the US like other generations. Sadly many of them are more concerned about being called Pacific Islander than Asian...this shows how distant they've become from the Philippines.

Most Fil-Ams I know (I’m a first Gen FilAm but born & grew up first in the Phil) are misguided about Filipino politics. Most unfortunately look at it in a American/bourgeois lense. Very simplistic POV and assuming It’s like the democratic vs republican situation in the US. Some who studied abroad with me in the Phil often live far differently from experiencing what normal Filipinos in the Philippines live like so they don’t often understand the political nuance and the struggles of the masses. When it comes to the China issue though they obviously support the US but they understandably won’t often know the whole situation and why some Filipinos may be against the US as well.

Well Filos and Viets tend to view each other as brethren from the Vietnam war to ASEAN, so if there are issues between the Philippines and Vietnam in the WPS/SCS I am pretty sure they can work things out through diplomacy and not harrass each other, I mean PH did it with Indonesia, one of PH's closest brother, in the Southern Seas of Mindanao so yeah... And also Vietnam is still treated as the only and closest communist ally of the Philippines and Vietnam view Philippines as its ally and brother as well so I know they can work things out unlike with China...

Not really. It's nerve racking for countries with incompetent, corrupt leaders maybe. Simply look at how Vietnam deals with things. Vietnam has good relations with both US and China (especially China), yet does not host a single US military base anywhere on its territory, and actively rejects the US from doing so for decades. Is the fastest growing economy in the world. Philippine leaders lack pragmatism and competency. As for why I said Vietnam has especially good relations with China, it is because China is actually several tiers above the US in terms of cooperation and partnership in Vietnam's own cooperation tiers. The US is actually just a basic tier 1 level of cooperation on Vietnam's list. So don't listen to what the troll propagandist US and CIA media outlets say. Vietnam and China is actually on very good terms.

There's no free lunch. The US will expect something in return for providing enhanced security in the region. A resolution of the South China Seas territorial dispute would be great for so many countries. Of course the first country to make a claim was the Republic of China in 1947 which occupied Taiping Island to the west of Palawan. ROC (Taiwan) forces remain there to this day. I believe they even evicted Philippine nationals in the islands at one point and arrested them.

Ukraine is an example on why it's fatal to be neutral. the 3 baltic states Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia join NATO earlier. While Ukraine didn't, now they are paying the price. Look at Sweden and Finland abandoning their neutrality after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Now they join NATO to not repeat the same mistake that Ukraine made. If Ukraine had join NATO earlier after Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia then they are protected by NATO's Article 5. meaning all of NATO are obligated to come to its aid militarily. Meaning Putin had to think twice before invading because they have to deal with 30+ countries and 3 of them have nukes.

Yet, if China attacks the Philippines, it will not be the incredibly nice, friendly and helpful Chinese who will do anything to fix the situation but the so-called nasty American. Sadly, like most people around the world, Most of these people dont know the history and the real cause of the dispute in the south China sea or west Philippine sea. The Philippines and china are not the only ones that lay claim on these islands. Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and even Taiwan are also claiming the disputed islands for themselves. Its naive to think that the US is getting in the mix because it "cares" for Filipinos. Like the Chinese, the americans are also only looking after their own selfish interests. The addition of 5 more US military bases in the Philippines is never about protecting the Philippines from foreign invasion, its about the US protecting its interests in Taiwan's microchip industry which it's very reliant on for its weapons manufacturing industry to continue it's domination and hegemony across the world. @@markus711 there's no such thing as "required". The US -ph defense treaty is not a guarantee that the US will immediately defend the Philippines in case of an attack by a foreign power. As a native speaker of English myself, what I find surprising is NOT that there are words borrowed from other languages. Tagalog belongs to the Austronesian language family, the same family as Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa Indonesia, and the aboriginal languages of Taiwanese natives. Over the years, Tagalog incorporated many loan words from Spanish (due to colonization), Hokkien (due to massive immigration of Han-Chinese people from Fujian within the last 500 years), and Sanskrit (due to our ancient Buddhist/Hindu past). As an analyst and advisor to the team working with the Philippine government I can say there is no benefit to the USA developing bases in PI except for a radar installation which we were willing to put anywhere in any country that wanted it. A radar installation means the US will spend big $$$ in that country and PI is smart enough to know that. China could run over PI quite easily, but if a US base is there then no. We will likely have a carrier group visit a PI port to tell China 'do not touch' and hopefully that will be sufficient to ensure PI sovereignty. Nobody wants to challenge a US Carrier group, China doesn't even want to be within 400 miles of a US Carrier group.

I am Filipino American with my entire family being Born in the Philippines. In the next few years we're all moving to Quezon City. I have the dilemma of having to renounce my US Citizenship in order to stay. But besides that I might be a bit biased but my family and I fully support the US presence in Asia. One thing that Filipinos and Taiwanese want most of all is the status quo. We want help from the US but we do not want an armed conflict with China or Russia. The Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan do not have the capability to defend themselves against the super powers like China or Russia. Maybe Korea can to an extent. If more US bases in PH is a good enough deterrent to keep the region peaceful I'm all for it. My greatest fear is imperialist China taking over South Korea Japan and the Philippines. I believe all democratic countries must be protected.

As a Filipino, I still believe in the superiority of the US-Philippine Alliance over the "friendship" China is offering to us. Having a superpower ally is still the best deterrent against another hostile superpower, especially when our AFP is still far beyond what they call the "minimum credible defense". With China as the biggest adversary, I don't think "minimum" is even enough. Superpowers are fickle and questionable, but it's better to have a democratic superpower whose leaders can be replaced, whose policies can change, and whose people's opinions are relatively more open to expression. Good luck protesting in Moscow or Beijing. But I also believe that the Philippines should NOT be dependent on the Americans alone to protect our national interests. The Philippines' primary responsibility is to build up its own defense capabilities and seek help from other democratic allies. Having an American presence is nice, but not the endgame aspiration. On the other hand, it cannot be denied that China has an economic and cultural influence on us, but we must learn to stand against authoritarianism. It would have been ideal for Sino-Philippine ties if China was a multiparty democracy like ours. But we make do with what we have. Overall, the Philippines remaining with the democratic camp is still the best option, but if there are ways to remain friendly with China without compromising our sovereign rights, we can try them. The foreign policies of Aquino II and Marcos II are far better than what Duterte ever tried. Best to stay with their course.

The US alliance is a folly, we benefited more from the Asian-centric policies of Duterte compared to the past two decades than the US "alliance." When it comes to Duterte, they're only viewing the relationship between China, but won't even bother to the fact that we strengthened ties with Japan, South Korea, Israel, and expanded ties with India, Turkey, ASEAN, the Middle East, and etc. It's for Duterte that we're able to acquire new advance weaponries, such as state-of-the-art helicopters from Turkey, Supersonic missiles from India, Sabrah Light Tanks from Israel, because he expanded ties to the countries we often called "unorthodox". We even had various transfer of technology deal with the JSDF of Japan and its military-industrial complex and with Israel. To establish minimum credible defense is to establish expanded diplomatic ties with various countries, to support you on your military modernization efforts, that's what Duterte did right, instead of fully relying on the American who can't even commit to assisting us, other than giving us some 2nd used hardware that has a shelf-life of 10-15 years. Don't get me started with the various economic policies that propelled the continous economic growth of the country, such as the infrastructure program, liberalization, and etc.

Were you asleep the past few years? The Duterte administration sought closer ties to China and both countries agreed to a peaceful resolution regarding the disputed islands through cooperation. Duterte went as far as to cancel joint exercises with US after the falling out between him and Obama. China took this opportunity to increase their presence by the Philippines to maintain their blockade of the disputed islands, continued it's fortification and harassed local Filipino fisherman from entering its fishing territories. Does this sound like China was cooperating? China had no intention of sharing it's claimed territories.

Philippines should not follow the US blindly but I think the history is clear that US values are more aligned with Philippines. US soldiers died in world war 2 to free Philippines from Japanese invasion. And after the war, the US agreed to Philippines independence and self-governance. I think it's the other way around, the Filipino soldiers died for the war that isn't theirs. America used (still is) the land but they don't want the responsibilities that comes with it. In the Treaty of Paris, they have the right to take advantage of our resources as if they are Filipinos. They wanted the land, but not the people. So there. They gave the Filipinos the "independence" because it's too much money to rehabilitate the country after the war. Also, they said that we're not white enough to be able assimilate to their culture. China and Ph is closely interlinked by trade and blood throughout the century. I am a US Navy vet. I served proudly with many Filipinos who have historically served in the US Navy. The US Navy devastated the Japanese navy in WW2 while supplying the Nationalist Chinese forces who held Chungking while the communist hid in the hills. I hope there is not a conflict, but I would recommend Beijing study the naval battles of WW2 before they challenge the US Navy. The Chinese can't "own" the South China Sea if their ships are at the bottom of it.

And no the US did not Colonize the Philippines. It was a Spanish Colony deeded to the US after the Spanish American War. To be honest the US never really knew what to do with it. Contrary to popular myth the US for most of its history has actively avoided any foreign holdings beyond a few that had clear National Security purpose. Hawaii, Guam and Somoa for example were needed fueling stops for the Navy in the 19th and early 20th century. And Hawaii due to its position is critical to defense of the Eastern Pacific.

As a half-Taiwanese, I think the Philippines is far more dangerous than Taiwan at the moment. Taiwan currently has no U.S. troops deployed. The economies of Japan, South Korea and China are deeply tied, and they have a certain degree of independence, and they will be very cautious about direct wars. After the Philippines became a U.S. military base, the nature of the conflict between the Philippines and China has completely changed, and this has gone far beyond the scope of island disputes. I am a Filipino and it is not right to say that it is all Filipino opinion. Since regionally every Filipinos has different opinion in this topic. My opinion is that it is not a tension between China and the US will drag the Philippines into a war. But Philippines and China tension would drag US into a war. Many always used U.S and China issue to an extent they use it as an excuse to have a pacifist stand. US and Philippine relation goes back after WW2. Also US is a deterrence that will make China think to not engage into a confrontation with the Philippines. US is one of the trusted nation for the Filipinos. The arbitration ruling ruled that China had no legal basis on "historical claims" to those islands, because NO country (including PH) can make claims on any territory based on historical claims with our current maritime laws. If China reversed the role and initiated this ruling, the same thing would have applied to the PH - that PH cannot claim those islands based on "historical" records as well.

As per my observation Filipinos have diverse opinion regarding US presence and building military bases may be because pro-US media is more dominant in Philippines. According to history US international politics and relations always revolve around self-interest. As far as I see it there are no truly neutral countries, even Switzerland has taken sides. It all depends on the conflict though, because at the end of the day each nation looks out for their own interests. When looking at the Philippines situation a war between China and the US will force all nations in the region to pick sides, because the US and China are the biggest investors in those foreign economies (example: North Korea can’t survive without Chinese support or investment, just like how South Korea can’t survive without European and US support and investment)

The Philippines and US both have Mutual Defense Treaty. If war break out with China either the US or The Philippines both will depend each others against China...I believes the S.Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, EU and other countries will help the Philippines.

It's a dispute because both sides claiming the same thing. The thing is Philippines only existed as an entity only a hundred years ago while China has been there for thousands of years. Just look the number of ethnic Chinese in South East Asia and who are the one running the economy. Not to mention, If a frontier is up for grabs by all, South East Asian countries are late to the game by a long stretch. Even if you are to follow the international treaty of sorts, China drawn up their 11 Dash line long before Philippines even realize what they want in addition. For those who don't know, PRC only claiming 9 Dash line because of good will for Vietnam during the Vietnam war against Americans. Who's the greedy one ?

The perspective of the common Filipino folk is basically neutrality. It does not seek to entrench with the barbarism of both countries, with China's aggression and with the opportunistic tendencies of the US. The country only seeks to continually economically grow and strengthen its own military further to fend off both powers. The PH is not pro-US, nor pro-China, it seeks to be neutral, while reaping both the economic and military benefits of both countries through trade and diplomacy. It wants to be diplomatically and military like Switzerland.

It's only the opinions of 5-7 people in Manila. It is a random pick so, the opinions of 7 people don't really speak for the whole Filipinos. Maybe I would agree if 1 of those 7 people said he/she is pro-China, and the rest is pro-US. I agree with more reliable surveys such as Pulse Asia coz the surveys they are conducting say it ranges to 85-90% are pro-US, next is those who are undecided and only a small number say they are pro-China.

Indonesia and India can't protect you from China, at all. If China decides the ocean around the Philippines and it's islands belong to them that's it you are done. Unless the US decides to step in. I will not deny that the US committed genocide in the Philippines but saying they ordered everyone over 10 to be killed is so stupid, there literally would not be a Philippines if that was the case, the deaths would have been in the millions.
