Hi John, on your Cost Analysis, what is the economic breakdown of the $70 value for the "First & Second fill value"? Or rather, where does the $70 comes from? Thanks! (Sorry, I am a little slow ;-)
@johntriedit Жыл бұрын
Hi, I think that was my estimate of the value gained by using this method. In other words, about 5 refills worth of CO2 with the refills costing $15 each from Sodastream. Looks like I rounded it down a bit. Since I made this video, I have switched to using a 20lb tank with a dip tube instead of a 5lb tank. Why? Because it costs $30 to fill a 5lb tank at my local welding shop. It costs $35 to fill a 20lb tank. Yes, you read that right. I can also share that my local beverage shop admitted to me that they were getting their CO2 from the welding shop and marking it up significantly. So I started going to the welding shop. Here's a link to purchase a 20lb CO2 tank with a dip tube (eliminating the need to turn the tank upside down): amzn.to/3QABPc5 Same tank costs >$200 at my local welding shop. The 20lb tank drops the numbers significantly and makes this more than worth it in terms of cost if you drink a lot of fizzy water like I do.

The tube type adapter is more for attaching the large cylinder to the SodaStream unit permanently, so you can avoid refilling the small cylinders completely.
@Brutale5872 жыл бұрын
Hey why do you bother emptying the canister first?
@michaelkuzmin Жыл бұрын
Interesting observation about the taste from the direct adapter. I wonder why that is. Perhaps it can be eliminated by using some alternative tubing. Anyway, I am actually getting a 20lb syphon tank and a different adapter with a hose and 3 valves. The refill price for 20lb is 35 CAD+tax and to refill a 5lb tank it's 25 CAD+tax. That and the cost of driving to the place to recharge it 4 times less frequently makes the 20lb version much more appealing.

Sounds good. I went with the method in the video because it stays close the intended use design. I was concerned a high pressure hose might over stress the soda stream valves. And in the case of a leak, I only lose one canister worth of gas. To each his own though.

@@johntriedit no I'm not connecting the tank to the device. I'm just using a much larger source tank. And that tank I use does not need to be held upside down because it's a siphon tank

GREAT! Regardless of using a 5lbs or 20 lbs tank, it is still a HUGE $$avings. Thanks for the 20 lbs tank information. When published, please send me a link to your new video of the 20 lbs tank with a dip tube (as I am unsure of the tube usage). Thank you very much for your replied John.

How can you tell when the SS canister is filled? Does the CO2 stop flowing once full? Also, when you go to refill the large 5lb tank, do they refill it or just trade it for another tank that is already filled? This looks/sounds terrifying but I'm definitely considering it. Thank you!

One last bit of math: when using the 5lb Co2 tank, each SodaStream canister refill costs $3 instead of $15 + tax. Links in the video description.

Too bad there isn't a Female Duo Connect to Male Tr21-4 adapter. For these Terra Sodastreams. This is for the older models. Anyone seen any?

The trick about slowly open the valve doesn't really work for me. Only one out of 5 cylinders I have actually worked. So, one works every time , the other 4 never worked. Also, careful where you buy the adaptor. I've got mine from SZZ Home Brew and it blew the rubber O-ring of the bleeding valve every single time I had to open it. Couldn't even fill one cylinder before I run out of O-rings. Horrible experience.

dam John I like your cost analysis and you figured to use the tool that would enable the machine to work as intended, I have seen some shawty hacks in the past where they would shove a mod and tub to the Sodastream. seems inefficient. this preserves optimum functionality while still being able to refill with 5lb tank

1:58 how much money am i losing by exchanging my empty 60L sodastream cylinder with a local guy that gives me a fresh full one weighing in around 1100grams filled for $8 i push the sodastream button 3 times for 1 second to fizz up the sodastream plastic 1L bottle of cold water and the cylinder lasted me 16 days i wasnt counting how much i was drinking per day, but around 3 litres probably, maybe little more
@deaddoll1361 Жыл бұрын
The Sodastream cylinder weighs 750 grams empty. The CO2 is 425 grams if full, so work it out for yourself. A larger cylinder than the one used here may be more economical if available near you, also one with a syphon tube means you don't need to turn it upside down. The top of the cylinder contains gas, the rest is liquid, which is what you want to access to refill. No tube means invert the bottle, with a tube you can leave it upright when filling.

In my area it’s $28 for the 5ib $34 for the 10ib And $41 for the 20 So to fill the 5ib to get the same amount as the 20ib would be $112 and a lot more trips to the refill station

Why turn upside down if it's gas inside? Why liquid? When you put dry ice inside it turns into gas, this is different?
@nybiggs3 ай бұрын
CO2 in tanks is stored as liquid. Dry ice is frozen liquid. It melts inside the cylinders. It only turns to gas when you let air out the cylinder. Then the liquid is exposed to the atmosphere and expands to gas. So the liquid sits in the tanks like a cup, from the bottom up torward the top. So you want CO2 liquid to go from your large donor tank into the sodastream cylinder. If you have a siphon then you don't have to flip it upside down, because it works like a straw. But if you don't have a siphon then you need to flip the tank upside down, so now the liquid is directly at the cylinder connection, transferring the liquid to your Sodastream cylinder.

do you find it difficult to fill the 5th refill given your 5lb tank is running low on CO2? if so, how do you manage to fill the sodastream canister for your 5th refill in full?
@johntriedit2 жыл бұрын
It's up to you how much you want to deal with the tank when it gets low. The 5th fill does not fill as much, but you can do several smaller fills after that, each lasting 2 or 3 days.
@mikeparker2520 Жыл бұрын
another easy option- buy dry ice, break it up, and put small chunks into your sodastream tank and screw the top back on... my bigger problem was finding parts to replace the proprietary seals on the cheaply made sodastream (and junked it).

Just imagine, after watching this video, an inexperienced viewer drops the cylinder and the valve sheers off. You have created a projectile.
