In this video I do some fillet pointing around the exterior of the property. It is important to keep an eye on gaps forming around the exterior of your property, as water can wash away the foundations over time, you can also get weeds growing in the gaps etc. Fillet pointing is relatively easy and can be done with the most basic of tools.
The mortar mix in this video is -
4 building sand
1 cement
A handful of polyester fibres
SBR to wet the mix (do not add water)
Here are some useful links to the fibres and SBR on eBay, it is best to get the sand and cement locally due to the weight of the products.

Reinforcing fibres- fave.co/37CpP3G

I would mix the fibers in the liquid first then add it to sand + cement. That way you avoid having lumps of fiber in the mortar.

You have set the bar very high needing a dry day and the temperature in the UK, the only place that it would be harder to get would be the lake district and Scotland. Would you use the same mix the re-point the bricks when needed?

You are not joking, I was hoping to do this one weekend- but most weekends it has rained here (like yesterday and this morning). I ended up stopping away from work for a week in order to get two dry days, even then it rained on the first day of pointing. I normally use a mix of 4 building sand, 1 cement and 1/4 of hydrated lime for pointing bricks, but I'm going to try out this mix with the SBR and the fibres next time. Thanks for the comment John ;-)

Perhaps, I did consider making a really thin mix of just cement and SBR, then pouring it into the gap between the drive and the wall- to ensure that it went in all the gaps- but then I thought that if I spilt it, I would have had a real problem trying to clean it up! Thanks for the comment

Could an exterior silicone been an option rather than using mortar? I thought you might get a better attachment to the imperfections of the brick surface and pavers that way. I like the fibre idea, not seen that before and will look at getting some. For mixing small quantities like you used here I have used the Cyklone that you did a video on some time back. I find it does an excellent job for mixing all sorts or things. I am really glad you did a video on it as I would never have got one without and it makes mixing paints so easy and quick does a fantastic job. I only wish they made a smaller one for the smaller pots of paint though I have just had the idea of buying a second and cutting it down width ways so it can fit in! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into making all you videos! So thanks!
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use an exterior silicone for filling the gaps. The fibre and SBR are great for mixing with mortar. I have an Evolution mixer paddle, which is great for larger mixes, so I have not tried the Cyclone on anything other than paint. I have struggled with the cyclone in smaller tins, it will only fit in larger paint tins - but it is still great for mixing. There was someone on KZbin that makes a similar mixer that will fit in smaller tins, they did offer me one to review but I can't find their comment! I'm glad you appreciate the videos, thanks for the comment 👍

😊 A mate of mine always used to say that. I have checked my phone in the past and the BBC weather app has shown a zero chance of rain, so I have started an outside job. An hour later and it is chucking it down! Yes, the gap on the drive was quite deep, I did get a builder to point it a few years back as he was doing some other work. I think he just put a bit of mortar on the top, without filling the void or adding a fillet. Hopefully it will last a bit longer this time! Thanks for the comment 👍
