As I’m sure you’re aware, in the days of vintage photography, there were no digital cameras or DSLR cameras. There were film rolls (negatives) which would be wound into film photography cameras; giving you; a set of 24 or 36 exposures (usually).
But what we call film photography today, was simply, photography. Photography using film negatives and positives had its own charm, and it was so addictive, that even today - there are mainstream photographers who prefer to work with 35mm film.
I, myself, am an ardent user of film. I grew up around film photography cameras and very enthusiastically explored the possibilities of film rolls like the Kodak Gold and the various 35mm film offerings from Fujifilm. But at the turn of the millennium, when digital cameras began their swift takeover, it was only natural, that the process of working with film and the development of film would slowly fade away, and I too - would begin to rely more and more on digital cameras for my work.
A common practice during the days of film photography: was the housing or putting away of negatives or positive slides for the process of developing or printing them later. Film was expensive, and the process of having it developed - quite lengthy. So it was only natural that somebody in the family took 24 or 36 exposures during a picnic and never got around to printing them. It’s quite possible that until now, you could be sitting on top of a treasure trove of nostalgia and cherished moments that went unseen. If that’s the case, today, in this photography tutorial, we’ll be showing you how to digitize those negatives and positive slides using a nifty device from Nikon, the Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing adapter.
We also wanted to make this photography video, to ease you (our subscribers) into film photography. Photography on film might not be everybody’s thing, (we understand the electronic viewfinder on mirrorless cameras is too difficult to part with!) but for those who want to learn about the possibilities of working with 35mm film and film photography; be it black and white film or color film photography, consider this the first on a whole bunch of tutorials in a film photography course we have planned for you in the coming weeks!
For digitizing the film negatives and positive slides, we’re going to be using the Nikon D850. It’s a high resolution dslr camera that will give us close to what we’re looking for. It also has a built-in negative conversion mode, if you want them right away. It is alright if you have a Nikon D5300 or a Nikon D5600, you can still convert negatives to digital photos using the steps mentioned in the video.
Things you’ll also need for digitizing the 35mm film negatives and slides: a 60mm macro lens (or any macro lens), an led light, a photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom.
