Brrrrrrmmm, I get that shaky feeling when someone looks at an analogue image and says 'Great Capture' (well meaningly of course) They aren't captures, they are photographs. Captures are what those digital thingies do.

To be fair not having a plan in a place as dramatic, varied and photogenic as Iceland is a lot easier than say, Birmingham. Its a beautiful and rewarding environment that I personally adore. Oddly though out of all those shots the sand was by far my favourite...which is bizarre because it could have been a beach in Ibiza for all I knew. Thanks for your content, I really enjoy living my life vicariously through your films, you have a great approach to film-making that is very personal.

Take the shot and don't be so hard on yourself. The results are amazing. Nature is Nature. And we all have our favorites. Even the sky which you don't like, is fantastic Nature. Well done. No plan. 🤩

Makes a tricky video title. but the reality isn't there in my experiences. My profession for decades limited the time I could make available for serious photography (landscapes). These ended up being week long, once or twice a year. Usually included a significant travel, car rental, hotels, etc. Apart from the obvious trip scheduling, I quickly found that to maximize my productivity and minimize my frustration by having the right light, right film, right lens, etc, the more pre-trip research and planning I put in, the better the trip and the photo results. Anal as it may sound, I often prepared a three ring binder of daily schedules, local maps, phone numbers of hotels, and anything else I might need to overcome unplanned disruptions. To my fellow travelers, I occasionally ended up looking like a cruise director, but no one ever complained when we arrive at a location, found the trails we wanted, and had enough time to get good light and good shots without stressing out.

I enjoyed it and agree that sometimes no plan is the best plan. Friday the first three plus hours in the daffodil fields were what I'd planned but then I found an unplanned long winding dirt road with reservoir views and golden eagles.
@kthschsslr2 жыл бұрын
A few year ago, I did a similar thing, but rode my motorcycle. Each morning, I drew an “X” on the ground with my boot, representing compass directions. Flipped a coin in the air, and that was the direction I went. Wound up 10 days later, 1800-ish miles from home, in the White Sands National Park with my 617. No plan is a great plan.

Absolutely love the seemingly natural ability you have to separate simple images from the busy landscape. Something I think I used to have when I first started photography. 30 years of scientific photography which always has a very specific end goal makes it harder for me to find those shots now…something I need to specifically work at. Thanks for another great episode, love to see the Hassy & Fuji.

I had an evening last night when I'd hoped for a good sunset only to have a cloud bank smother the light in the last hour so I understand how that is. Beautiful Iceland, was there last Summer and returning in Summer 2023, you have to be a hardy soul to go in Winter as it can be brutal. Will be travelling through the Westfjords next time 4x4 and definitely with a plan as we are doing a whole lap of the country in 6 days. Love the minimalist shots of the lagoon and the B&W pano was spectacular, so much contrast in Spring when the snow is melting and the ground reappearing through it. It is an incredible place at any time of the year ❤️🇮🇸

1st & 3rd of the blue pond & the black pano I liked the best. The sand was a curious one - by that I mean, what's going on w/ the two sands overlap is, well, curious, nice catch.

I so want to get back to Iceland. I agree with you: Day 1 was very successful. The panorama from Big Bertha was fantastic and worthy of a big print. I also liked the images from the pool; I even liked the one at the coast, which you didn't like. And the sand image was great, especially with the wood-like grain on one half of the frame and that sort of jagged, diagonal divide with the lighter-colored sand. I'm beginning to think that no plan is the best plan.

@dennisvanleent12 жыл бұрын
Love it Thomas, and couldn't agree more with this way to get around. I went to Iceland 6 years ago, and had seriously overplanned my roadtrip (and hugely underestimated the distances and amount of time I spent there). I ended goin' with the flow, having a general plan where to go and knew largely what was on my way. I really payed off as i skipped some parts of my trip, on the benefit staying longer at some beautiful areas. And until now I stick with this philosophy, no matter the destination. To me capturing landscapes is about the experience; planning too meticulously distracts from the time I'd rather use to get in touch with my emotions on a particular location. I just prefer to give myself the space to roam and explore whilst having a general idea of where to find my subjects. Not all things can be planned; moments are fleeting after all, whether you're chasing them or stumbling onto them. But thats a given with landscape photography.
