Pinnacle of what television storytelling can do, this season right here
@thegrimner8 ай бұрын
Opening scene sets the tone, always. Snoop learns info, retains info, then teaches that info to Chris, adapting it to their reality. And in case you were wondering, they were using lye powder on the body. Doesn't dissolve, but it sort of dessicates the flesh so that bodies mummify instead of rot, to avoid stench. Prez's arc is more or less the real life story of Ed Burns, who is the main writers this season. Burns went from homicide detective to school teacher and this season is his baby, more or less .

This season is so close to my heart. When this show originally aired my Dad used to work Sunday nights so he had me record the episodes on tape so he could watch them. He had me started during Season 3 which was good but Season 4 really did it for me. It probably helped that I was around the age of the cast of the kids and lived a similar life at the time. I related to Randy alot. Anyways I hope you enjoy this season as much as I did

"I am lovable and capable" wasn't meant for the kids. It's a self-affirmation for the teachers, because a lot of them start to crack under the stress.

Ah yes my friend we're finally here. Despite Season 3 being my fave I seriously do believe (among with *many* others) that this is the absolute best season of The Wire. Just incredible television imo. It's considered one of the greatest seasons of television ever produced for a reason. I'm impressed and love that you picked up on Marlo's crew modus operandi already 👏 One of my absolute favorite show don't tell moments in the entire show. It's just so excellently done how they show us what the cops don't know and are baffled about. Snoop's conversation with the store owner establishes that they have been dropping bodies, "five jobs last month" wasn't no hyperbole lmao and then we see them actually taking a life (in a very obvious vacant mind you). Following that we then see them using the nailgun to board up the vacant where they took Lex to get killed. Speaking of, the shot of Chris and Snoop walking past the boarded up vacants at night is one of my favorites in the entire series. For me it makes them give off the vibe of death itself (grim reapers) and is just really frightening on its own and even far more so with greater context. Idk I've just always liked it 😂 Marlo and his crew are scary af. I've just always found it incredible that we get the gist of everything in literally the first episode. One of MANY reasons why I believe that "Boys of Summer" is imho the best season premiere of the show. You're absolutely in for a treat with this season Elie.

It was going to be confirmed in S5 but they ran out of time, having only 10 episodes, so it was left out since it isn't exactly a major plot point.

Season 1 introduced how the game is played on both sides of the law. It looked at how drug orgs and the police run on a day to day, down in the trenches way. Season 2 looked at how economics play a role in this mess, how unemployment and blue collar crime feeds into the game and how big players exploit it and how the drugs come in wholesale. Season 3 was politics. Specifically, politics between people and institutions caught up in both running and combating the drug game and how both sides could de-escalate but choose not to for appearances' sake. So far its all been top-down: we've seen how the game and its consequences and responses work. Season 4 is, like you said, going to look at root causes, not just roots. It's the "why" not the "how". We're now looking at what's under the game rather than on top of it, holding it in place from below. Just a tip: pay attention to Tony's campaign. By the end of the season, among many others, you'll realize how tragic that campaign is. Not to spoil anytjing, but this is the season where I think a lot of us truly realized just how much of a clusterfuck this all is.

I got to see both sides growing up I lived in a small town 45 minutes north of Milwaukee Wisconsin And when I was in the 6th grade We moved to south Florida west palm beach to be exact West palm beach Fort Lauderdale and Miami is all connected to each other Like one huge city And I went to Rosevelt middle school All black and me and about 6 other Mexican kids and a about 5 white kids And it was worse then what they portrayed the school system on the wire Girls were fucking in the bathroom Girls 13 14 years old walking around pregnant Fights would break out and the teachers Would stay back and let it go down Because the teachers were scared of the students And in each class you would have 3 to 5 Kids sitting in the front of the class Doing what the teacher was asking them to do The other 15 or 20 kids was shooting dice playing cards hitting on females Or just sleeping First time I ever saw cocaine was in history class my friend Juan was doing lines on his desk with his school book Propt up so the teacher wouldn’t see what he was doing Man I could say a lot more but this comment is long enough

Without spoiling anything. From my experience to your question about prez and his impact on the kids. Its not as easy for a teacher or anyone on the outside looking in to reach kids in the hood. Its not jist a race thing. Because you saw how black people from the church have difficulties doing the same thing. At the end of the day you can tell these kids what not to do. But its easy to say that when you go home at night to your safe environment while we have to go back to our fucked up environment. You do have to act a certain way.and it could be as simple as defending a friend that could lead into a bigger issue. I personally think the problem is we dont actually tru to understand the situations and environments these kids come from. We will often poont to someone succeed and use his story to say there is no excuse for becoming a criminal. When you live in a environment where crime is the best thing going its hard fof you to listen to someone else. Because to you the shit you see is normal. But this is my personal favorite season. I honestly can see myself in alot of the main cast of kids. And in this seasons i would recommend you pay close attention to each kids personally. They are all wildly different and it will explain the choices they make

Watched a video about the topic of "calling - rooms" in Washington... right across the street of congress (probably a Last Week Tonight Segment) They are famous for breaking and making one term congressmen. Thought they got elected to work but most of the time they are there to beg. If you have an ego like a politician - begging for money 24/7 must be hell - even if you are there for the right reasons. I love thinking back on season 1 episode 1 when watching s4e1: seeing Carver being on first name basis with everyone especially Bodie (the western district way no more) - being happy to see Prez is something nobody can imagine in the first episode - McNulty being sober... the world is on its ass - to quote Carver.

So at 44:38 you pretty much hit the nail on the head. Its a combination of all tboes things you mentioned. Its definitely parenting. Alot of these kids come from broken homes with a lack of discipline. Lack of fathers or poor father figures. With males around the age ofthese boys. Single mothers lose control of them especially if they are working or shit parents. And while one is worse the results are the same. the kids are often time neglected and left by themselves. And in this tyoe of environment there is a good chance theses kids will start to get influenced more by the people in the streets then their parents. Its poor schooling. The standards are not kept up and you have teachers that may or may not give a fuck. You have kids that dont give a fuck either because of multiple reasons. Honestly school work is uninteresting to most kids. But when you lack motivation from both school staff and at home. Its almost like you are in auto piolet. But don't worry. This season is going to go deeper into this issue

I think they mention at some point that it's been roughly a year since season 3, so Carcetti has been running for that long. American election campaigning must be absolutely grueling. Carcetti is just burned out at this point, that's why he's so on edge. Couple that with the fear of having run for nothing if he loses and I get that he has these moments of just wanting to give up. It must've taken a toll on his family as well, even though the wife doesn't show it and soldiers through.

With kids, EVERYTHING begins at home. Teachers and principals and social workers don't exist for the first four or five years of a child's life. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters do. They are the ones that teach that child how to behave and interact with others in the world. What those people value, the child values. If that's respect, order, discipline -- then the child goes into the school with those values. Clearly, many kids learn very different values and bring those to school with them. Even though the school system has its own values that teachers and other adults try to instill in kids, the kids still spend the majority of their time away from school. And if those kids live in an inner city like Baltimore, the values they are exposed to outside of school are ones that will be in direct opposition to those the school teaches. That's why teaching in those inner-city schools is so taxing; every day, teachers play a losing game trying to teach kids one thing that the parents and the neighborhood contradict.
