The problem with this wish is that it presumes Aladdin knows that Jasmine loves him and wants to marry him upon making the wish. He does not. He in fact thinks she doesn't even remember him, and believes his smitten feelings for Jasmine are completely unrequited. He wishes to be a prince not just because 'only princes can marry Jasmine' but because 'only a prince would even have a chance with her'. The reason he hides his identity from Jasmine is because he's convinced she has no interest in a street rat and would only be interested in a prince. If he knew Jasmine had the hots from him from the outset 90% of the movie would be missing because he'd just tell her who he was immediately and then Jasmine would conspire *with* him to get married, rather than fight against him about it until she realizes who he really is.

I agree completely. I think Aladdin felt very insecure around Jasmine at first. And he obviously had no real idea how a Prince was expected to behave. It was love at first sight with his Jasmine but he thought he had no chance with her and her father would never approve of her marrying a so called street rat. And Aladdin had that many run ins with Razoul and his fellow palace guards they would soon have told Sultan what Aladdin was really like. So he felt his only option was to become a Prince and even then it wasn't guaranteed he would win Jasmine's wee heart. That famous quote from Jasmine at the palace "I am not a prize to be won" her best quote from the movie. There, Aladdin was outlandish and somewhat arrogant. Sultan may have fallen for his charm, but it didn't convince Jasmine. And then of course Jafar was never going to like "Prince Abooboo" And I think Jafar realized that there was something just not quite right about him. It nearly cost Aladdin his life when he almost drowned on Jafar's orders with the wee ambush and Aladdin would never have been found. Aladdin was playing a dangerous game and personally I don't think he realised how challenging it would be

Don't get me wrong Aladdin is my favourite Disney movie ever but I never understood the second "wish" Aladdin was passed out and gagged, he couldn't make a wish. Genie even said "I can't help you unless you make a wish" Genie deciphered a "nod" as a yes from Aladdin. But that could have been caused by the underwater current or muscle reflexes or even the after effects of being violently shaken by the Genie. I don't think Genie had any right to intervene. Either help Aladdin as a favour or don't intervene at all. But it was never a wish

The problem is that the Genie isn’t exactly a genius. Though he can see into the future (probably? It’s a little ambiguous), he’s shown multiple times to be outwitted by Aladdin himself. He’s unlikely to come up with a better plan than our Boi. Plus, he’s *on* Aladdin’s side. If Al gets what he wants, Genie goes free. It’s already in his best interest to make sure Al gets the girl. Thus, making him a prince is likely the best the Genie can come up with as well.

Well, it's a point that people often forget; he says that those rules are just his personal rules, not that they aren't possible for him to do. Which also means that he won't grant wishes like "I wish that I could wish for Jasmine to love me" or "I wish for more genies" or something that might surpass his rules, because he isn't forced too grant every wish if I'm remembering correctly. However, one thing that could work is asking to marry Jasmine and specifying that the wish doesn't have to make the two fall in love, that it only gets them married. Even then, it is possible that the genie will not grant that wish because he realizes how on the edge of breaking the rules (which would be his rules) that is.

Divorce is a taboo subject for some races and or ethnicities especially older generations. If you could divorce based on no love then most marriages during that time period would have been voided. The way marriage worked during that time is you'd have to be married off to someone, and follow your specific role; love had nothing to do with marriage back then because marriage was like a contract between two families.

That only works as a second wish. You must first make the "marry to the princess" wish (so the effect directed to "everyone alive" has a valid definition). -> It could be worked around by adding the words "WILL" and "FUTURE" [it may even work with a hypotetical wish not necesary granted by the same genie].

Loved this theory! But I disagree with MatPat's reasoning of why asking to be a foreign prince wouldn't work. Yes, a lot of the time they did arrange marriages to be tactical but Jasmine's father wasn't like that. Technically this should work. Jafar became a genie, but forgot the magical cuffs that bind a genie to a lamp and keeps them prisoner. When the owner of the lamp sets a genie free, they're not performing the act themselves but rather give permission for the genie to set himself free. By that logic genie should be able to grant Aladdin the wish to be a free genie.

Actually if you look at the history of women in power they often keep their lovers at a distance to preserve their power (see Catherine the Great and Elizabeth the first). Aladdin would have a much better chance wishing for Jasmine to not be a princess and either use his last wish(es) to set up a life they can be happy together with or give her the lamp and let her use her wishes. Option two has the bonus of letting Aladdin free the genie after they use 5 wishes.

Very true. But that will make Aladdin no better than Jafar. As stated by Aladdin himself in the Kingdom Hearts version of Aladdin. I personally find Aladdin being truthful is much better than lying. Plus, Aladdin proved himself and the Sultan changed the law anyway while in the live action movie version, the Sultan lets Jasmine change it.

Jasmine does have interest in Aladdin already but the existing law was preventing Jasmine from being able to choose Aladdin. It was not further elaborated but wishing for something like that does not make you better than Jafar and also a waste of a wish. It’s like you are forcing a change to happen to get what you want. If he wanted to be a real prince or Salten, he could have wished for his own, land, property, and kingdom by simply wishing for a kingdom of his own. He could even make it a paradise in the desert.

For the sultan wish, Aladdin could've been killed as the law said that Jasmine can only marry a prince, so if the Sultan blatantly broke that law; the advisors and guards would've assumed that Aladdin might've threatened the sultan and other political stuff if they didn't assume attempts on the sultan. For the law wish, just because the law is changed doesn't mean it changed people's ideas about the law, so they would just erase it and I don't believe the genie allows for the alteration of a person's thoughts as he prohibits wishing for someone's love by changing their thoughts

@@Lucky10279 he can, but that's not the point, he said to let the sultan accept him, not change the law, and as you know, anything not related to the wish doesn't change, if you didn't wish for the law to change, the wouldn't, the sultan might accept him and let them marry, but what has that to do with the law? the same scenario suggested above still would happen even if the sultan changed the law, because why would he change the law for a street rat? this question is answered in the movie by the whole plot of the movie, but if the movie didn't happen, and he just straight out wished for that sultan to let him marry her, why would he dod that?
