In a series built around undead armies, flying dragons, and blood magic, the most unbelievable events might just be based on mundane travel. The size of Westeros and timeline of Game of Thrones have always been somewhat ambiguous and questionable, but season 7 has really shed a blaring spotlight on some possible timeline issues.

LOL MatPat: "GRRM specifically set the size of the wall at 300 miles in a 2008 interview" Then proceeds to highlight so that people don't read the rest of the interview. Where he says "I have deliberately tried to be vague about such things, *so I don't have obsessive fans with rulers measuring distances on the map* and telling me that Ned couldn't get from X to Y in the time I say he did." and "If you turn up any mistakes in travel times by using that measure, *let it be your secret.* " Don't get me wrong, the show is ridiculously filled with plot holes and I found the end of this theory actually kind of interesting. Matpat, you seem to be under the impression that GRRM has any hand in the writing of the show at this point. You also seem to believe that evidence in the books can be used with the show, which it can’t. Many aspects of the novels no longer can be connected to the show itself. As an aside, just because dragons and giants exist in the world, that doesn’t mean the logical laws of physics and common sense have been twisted.

It’s explicitly said Hodor is 7ft tall. This is just reaching for absolutely nothing. And even with this bullshit theory, still wouldn’t be able to explain how Gendry gets from the lands of always winter to the wall, message sent to dany, dany makes it back past the wall in not even 1 day. And guy above me, no they didn’t. They got all their information ahead of time. GRRM had literally nothing to do AT ALL with the show after season 3 or 4, other than being executive producer which is nothing but a title to collect money. There is plenty of proof around the web on that.

TL;DR Season 7 is broken. FYI, you could have used the simpler notion that a day is twice is long as an Earth day. Westeros has some *crazy* seasonal dynamics - which I personally accounted to a planet on an extremely eccentric orbit. Therefore, it isn't beyond reason that the world of ASOIAF spins slower than Earth

Let's get some things straight. 1. The writers of Game of Thrones have split off from the books, so you shouldn't be blaming George RR Martin for this. 2. The mentioned height of Gregor Clegane is something like eight feet tall which is accurate for his character in our measurement standards 3. Jon and Dany are not cousins, they are nephew and aunt 4. If you look at a picture of The Wall with people standing outside of it, like at 11:35, you can measure how tall that person is compared to the 700ft wall behind them and the people seem to be human sized. 5. People, animals, monsters, and dragons would have serious health problems if they were double the size. It would be impossible for many to exist. 5. There are so many plot holes and things that don't make sense in the new season like how is Euron literally everywhere on the ocean? Wouldn't have someone noticed the majority of the Lannister army marching across the continent to high garden? Why didn't Lord Varys notice that with all his spies? Why can't Dany just wear some armor to be protected from arrows? How could Gendry run all the way to the wall, send a raven, have Dany fly her dragons all the way back past the wall and save Jon in only one night? How could Dany have marched an entire Dothraki army to the Lannisters without them noticing? I very much enjoy the new season and I think MatPat does a great job of getting out weekly theories, but there are many holes both with the show and this theory.
@assdan27
@assdan27 6 жыл бұрын
So, there are two major fights that Euron has this season, and based on the timeline of the show, he could have been at both but I will say that he could have been at both, just barely. I don't think the next three questions really need to be answered, so I'll skip them. But, it's never really established how far the fight in the last episode occurs from the wall, so Gendry, could have possibly reach it in an hour or two. It's never really stated how fast the Dragons can fly as well, but it seems to be pretty fast. So the big issue is definitely the speed that the raven travels at. The raven would basically have to travel 3 times faster than they can on Earth for it to reach Dany in a day. And with the Dothraki army, I don't remember where they were supposed to initially attack, so don't have much to say about them. I'll say though, that this season is definitely not as well written as previous seasons. Everything has to occur just so this season, while everything generally made perfect sense in other seasons.
@Ryuk45
@Ryuk45 6 жыл бұрын
Do you know why they split off from the books? Because George RR Martin is a lazy fat fuck who hasn't released a good book for 15 years and he refused to give a definitive ending to the series. It's entirely GRRM's fault.
@assdan27
@assdan27 6 жыл бұрын
It's hard to disagree with this to some degree. GRRM put out his last Song of Ice and Fire book over 6 years ago, which was just after the first season began. Seriously? It takes you 6 years to finish a book? Maybe he should stop writing spin-offs and offshoots and actually finish the series.
@IshtheStomach
@IshtheStomach 6 жыл бұрын
Criticize GRRM's writing speeds after you invent a universe, with complex histories and political struggles, mythos and cultures, and publish a few novels set in that universe, get the series picked up by a major cable network and spawn a pop culture phenomenon. I agree once the series got picked up the smart choice would have been for him to prioritize finishing it, or he'd run the risk of the show moving faster than the novels. But that's a concession he chose to make, and his reasons are his own.

Wouldn't it be way simpler to just assume that a Westeros "mile" is about half the length of the real-world English standard mile? After all, a mile has meant many things in many different cultures. The Chinese mile is only 500m.
@nicemelbs
@nicemelbs 6 жыл бұрын
With winters and summers lasting for years at a time, it's not much of a stretch to assume that they're in a planet with similar features than Earth's but with a vastly different weather pattern. Now, considering that, it's easier to imagine that they simply have longer days than ours. Longer days but roughly similar years. ie instead of 365 days, a year in their world takes less days, to explain why they dont look much older.
@Vardaris
@Vardaris 6 жыл бұрын
nicemelbs actually the theory is interesting but the info we have from the books about the attempts to explore Sothoryos (a continentsouth of Essos) and the attempts to discover land at the west of Westeros suggest that the planet is much larger than Earth.

@Vardaris
@Vardaris 6 жыл бұрын
megadeathx Actually you would. From London to the southern part of Europe is around 4000 miles also Africa from the most northern to the most southern part is around 5000 miles. So you roughly need to travel 9000 miles. In the show the dragon covers 1000 miles in a day. Let's asume this is too much and cannot do it every day, we will assume it can cover just 400 miles a day. This is very easy it means that the dragon would fly at 80 mph for 5 hours a day which is very very feasible and allows for rest etc. This means that at this pace it would take 22.5 days for the dragon to make the distance or around 3 weeks which is not that much actually.

We can't know for sure how long they spent during the day - but if dragons can fly faster (which I would guess it takes less than 10 hours, maybe even half?), and they spent large portions of both day cycles trapped, it is plausible.

It's more likely that the 300 miles for the wall is inaccurate (by many miles) than comparing it to the theory that the size of beings are doubled in relative scale to things on earth. Not to mention that it would be biologically impossible if the gravity was similar to earth. A more logical reason that they made it on time in what appears to be a long distance is due to inaccurate drawn distances in map scaling. Places that are visited or traveled much more often will get more drawn detailed paths and terrain details (the line is also drawn out more not to scale). Then when you have much fewer people visit places of the north like Castle Black (the wall) the map would be more simplified. Though in reality the north should actually be drawn on the map to be seen to cover a much larger area. TLDR: The map distance scaling per location is likely inaccurate due to the popularity of route. Therefore the wall as a map distance gauge would be entirely inaccurate. P.S. What I said up above is just a theory (a film theory). Though I know that GRRM made an official map but my theory would still hold up a candle due to it being GRRM interpretation of how the people in Game of Thrones would make such a map. *Edits*: I corrected some mistakes and grammar.

But in a show to try and logically figure things out...you gotta go with what your given. The map is supposedly canon right? You can assume that the things given to us are simply wrong or mistaken...but then you don't have much to work with, and then who's to say the show didn't get a ton of other things wrong within it's own lore and boundaries? And if the argument becomes "the canon material given to us is simply wrong" then...what's the point of following a story if that statement can just be applied to it? Then the show can just get away with having bad writing.
@kranker114
@kranker114 6 жыл бұрын
I'm saying that the Wall's drawing on the map is smaller than it should actually be drawn in comparison to everything else on the map. In other words the distance they needed to travel in a fortnight is actually shorter if you bring the drawn map of the north larger to its true map size. So instead of 660 and 840 (1500) miles it would actually be a fraction of the distance if you brought the Castle Black's Wall distance to equal scale of Westeros. Though in addition the Wall could indeed actually be smaller considering the amount of men needed to upkeep such a wall.

René Volný First off, I doubt MatPat knows about this, he just messed up. Obviously we know that Jon's true parentage now. Which is the thing. Before that reveal you probably thought the song of ice and fire was about Jon and Dany right? But now it is either solely Jon or the song of ice and fire and fire, it seems unbalanced to before. Idk if you read the books but Selmy thinks about how Ashara Dayne was tossed aside by a Stark brother at a camp. Which is really oddly vague. There is a bluray extra that discusses this but I am still looking for it. Readers probably assumed Brandon, I know I did, but he did seem dedicated to Cat. Ned however was single. It is possible that Ned got Ashara pregnant and Varys did something to put Dany in place of the baby that was supposed to be born when Rhaella died. Viserys was only 5 and he is the only one to collaborate the story. Ashara is not a Targaryen but she does have purple eyes, so probably a descendant of Valyria. So Dany would be the daughter of Ashara and Ned. Didn't it seem a little odd that Ned would quit being Hand of the King over the assassination attempt? He takes his duty very seriously. Then Dany and Jon would both be the song of ice and fire. There are three part youtube videos if you want to hear more.

George R. R. Martin isn't to blame for this season's shoddy writing, you have the two plebs David Benioff and D. B. Weiss to thank for that. George's books aren't at season 7 yet, they roughly end at season 6, so stop blaming Georgey boy!

ELITERgamersUK Well D&D can be cut some slack though. They didn't sign up to write Game of Thrones fanfiction for the show. They've done a great job so far and I imagine they expected Winds of Winter to be released and then have worked with a draft of A Dream of Spring for Season 8. It is much easier to write from an established plot than to create your own. They just know the ending and a few arcs for characters. Also the studio pressure must be immense. HBO wants to have as many episodes as possible, as fast as possible, to make as much money as possible. I imagine that D&D only got a year or two to write all the scripts for the season which means everyone saying they're shit writers isn't wrong but comparing them to George is just unfair. He gets all the time he wants to finish a novel. Which is why Season 8 will probably be delayed to actually get the scripts polished and the finale perfect. With ten episodes we might not have gotten such cool moments like The Field of Fire 2.0 or The Suicide Squad in the North or maybe they would just be less awesome. The show, while it is immense, does not have an unlimited budget. When you watch the behind the scenes videos you can see just the sheer amount of work that goes into the show. I think D&D can be cut some slack, they're not great writers but they're writing the biggest show on television, with massive studio and fan pressure all while delivering a still enjoyable experience. We're at the climax of a journey, all the plots are coming together. I say enjoy the ride.

Wouldn't 'a foot' be scaled up, too? I mean, if it was in meters maybe it wouldn't change. But, because a foot was initially the length of a literal foot, their values would be the same as ours (or at least similar due to variations on feet sizes). Unless they were twice as big everywhere else but the feet.

cousins" just means they're related by blood and one didn't give birth to the other. For instance, my grandmother is also my cousin. I know it sounds kind of stupid, but that's mainly because of the flaws in language as a whole.

@zarfottofraz7732 6 жыл бұрын
No they're cousins because the mad king and his wife were brother/sister, meaning rhaegar and daeneys are both cousins and siblings, Rhaegar being Jon's father makes Daenerys and Jon second cousins (cousins once removed). Jon is Daenerys' nephew but theyre technically cousins too . Incest does screw it up, but technically they are both cousins and aunt/nephew. If you wanna go by the technical definition and call your grandma and grandpa a cousin, ok then you do that. Theyre both though

Nothing has hinted that. The characters in the show are human, and nothing has implied them to be anything other than human, so I wouldn't place any bets on the days being any sort of different length - we have no mentions at all of napping in the middle of the day or anything, and this is something that would be relevant to the story and mentioned. I did post a comment about how, unfortunately, MatPat is wrong in this case, and that that kind of length is definitely possible, just difficult.

Tyler Hood Well, as I said in my comment, which you should read, longer days are something significant in the story of the world, and would be pointed out. There might be an hour or so variance, but to the degree that he is saying needs to exist, no.
@terezamalacova7712
@terezamalacova7712 6 жыл бұрын
But if you consider the days could be longer because of the planet's rotation time, then you could say they divide their day the same way we do, into 24 hours, each hour into 60 minutes and so on, so what you would essentially claim is that a Westerosi second actually equals 2 Earth seconds or a similar measure that would fix it. Therefore the velocity of their movement would increase and voilá, problem fixed. The process of evolution would make them adapt to the day/night lenght of their world.
@GamerGrovyle
@GamerGrovyle 6 жыл бұрын
Kristopher Burt They wouldn’t have the energy to do all that work. A human normally sleeps a fourth of the day 8~ hours out of the 24 hours that make up a day. If the days were twice as long they’d all be awake for 36~ hours straight (provided the standard sleep schedule of our peaceful dragon-free world.) You try to work for 36 hours straight without sleep and then 12~ hours of rest. Odds are you’ll collapse from exhaustion within a month (and so would the GOT characters).

wouldn't it be more plausible to suggest their days are longer. Since a westeros winter can last years, it'd make more sense that a westeros day lasts longer than ours (e.g. like 40 hours) and a fortnight could be 4 weeks as opposed to 2. I still like your theory but i thought this made more sense than tyrion being taller than Shaq

Now, MatPat, I can excuse the poor quality of your theories lately, because we all know that it's your source of income, but there's just one thing that bugs me to no end in this video; you blaming GRRM for everything. He didn't even write a single episode this season. Honestly, I'm pretty sure he's bashing his head against the wall as much as we are, because the people truly to blame right now are David Benioff and Dan Weiss. If GRRM had any control over anything this season, which he didn't because he wants to focus on writing The Winds of Winter, he would have prevented or changed many of this season's events. Hell, I can disprove your little "everything is twice as big" theory with a couple sentences and some basic physics. GRRM himself has noted that the planet Westeros, Essos etc. are on is round, and approximately 25% bigger than Earth. Assuming the existence of life similar to Earth (humans, livestock, birds, critters as we know them), we can confidently say that the planet is very similar in composition as well. That means it would be just as dense. Thus, it's gravity is quite a bit stronger than what it is on Earth. If everything was twice as big, the planet's gravity would have squished everything back to our sizes, and perhaps even smaller, long before the First Men arrived in Westeros. The only thing supporting your theory right now is magic, and I'm not bloody having that.

Any comment on how the increased proportions of the humans of Westeros (as mentioned in this theory) would impact your calculations regarding Tyrion and Cersei Lannister's alcohol consumption? I guess with increased liver tissue and an increased metabolism, they would be able to handle the amount they are seen drinking in the show. Or would it still be impossible?

yes a typo is possible, but he'd have had to have made the typo several times for this one, which is the disturbing part, errors happen and more often when things get rushed. Had he just had the km sign for winterfell it would have been 2 times reading it wrong for him to have typed it in wrong for the real world castle as well means he 4 times at minimum didn't notice the error... This is what distubs me that he rushed it this much and he's that unfamiliar with km for this to even happen. Still he makes greater work on these videos than I could ever do so i'll from time to time keep stumbling over enjoyable videos from him. This one though had to many errors imo.
