Theorists, have you heard of Yellowstone? No? Well, you are not alone. Yet it is apparently one of the most popular shows right now. How is that possible? Enter the rollercoaster of a platform that is Twitter. Yes, Twitter. I have a hunch that it may have a hold on your media... and your MIND! Don't believe me? Just ask Avatar 2...

After years of twitter fraud, inflated user populations built of bots to deceive users and investors alike, and the now documented government censorship, these realities of Twiter have only recently come to light. Keep in mind, KZbin, Reddit, and Facebook were owned by the same conglomerates utilizing the same technology, meaning their current usership numbers are likely just as fraudulent and over-inflated as Twitter was, as the evidence seems to suggest is exactly the case. We do not collectively program the AI. The AI programs us. That's what the AI was programmed to do in the first place.

If the average Avatar fan is anything like me, they've been quietly following the ever-postponed release dates for 13 years, quietly getting hyped, and are not shouting from the rooftops how they're going to go see it in cinemas - but they will definitely go. It's been too long to be loud, but I never stopped loving the setting, and I'm quite excited to see the new writing and tech in action!

I had this video on my "watch later" list for a while and I'm so glad I finally watched it. It confirms all of my suspicions about Twitter and the cesspool of very vocal self proclaimed "film experts" that reside there. I swear I never saw anyone complain so vehemently about movie posters in my life. There was also an insane amount of users that screamed "no one cares about Avatar" on every Avatar related tweet before Avatar 2 released and even beyond. As evidenced by the money the movie is making, a lot of people care, myself included. At this point I'm convinced that 99% of people on Twitter are just trolls and bots. Most of the reactions to movies/games on Twitter are completely opposite to people's reactions in the real world. It's baffling but this video starts to make sense of it.

I work in a library and the circulation of TV shows on DVD is super interesting as it reveals what people are actually watching (admittedly probably skewed towards older folks who are more likely to use the library). I was shocked to find that by far the shows which circulate the most are Yellowstone and British murder mysteries. In comparison, almost nobody is checking out shows like game of thrones or stranger things, or even classics like the Simpsons, which all get a lot more attention on social media.

There's a couple factors at play here. First, not as many people have Paramount + as compared to HBO Max or Netflix. That means folks who don't are more likely to borrow from the library. Also, the medium you are talking about skews toward older audiences by default. Lots of younger people don't have/keep DVDs anymore. They are more likely to have either converted to Blue Ray, or just stream their movies/TV shows. Finally, Simpsons, and other long running shows get talked about because everyone can relate to them. Most people with access to western media know what those shows are about, even if they haven't watched in years/decades.

It should kind of be obvious that Twitter isn't representative of most things. Not only is the userbase small, but the toxicity is so high that most users barely visit it nowadays. I was actually really excited for Snydercut but never rallied for it on Twitter. Conversely, I know many Twitter users who rallied for it but never watched it. With how small the active userbase already is, these kinds of factors play an even bigger role. That's just how it works

In my opinion, the two most annoying social media platforms are Twitter and TikTok. Both have super annoying names and logos and everything I've ever heard or seen from them melts my brain. I hate it when people say something stupid is actually true just because they saw a TikTok or Tweet about it. I also have a very dark place in my heart for TikTok since a stupid trend was responsible for recking my school's bathrooms again and again. My advice for what it's worth would be to just stay on KZbin, where intellectuals of all kinds work... Although the adds are absolute torcher.

I think that part of it is satisfaction. You usually don't hear about something in social media (as a whole) if it is 'good' or 'doing well'. Normally, there is only news of something doing either extremely well, or opposite of that, extremely bad. If people are just satisfied with some media (movie, tv show, video game) it doesn't seem to get a lot of attention.

And that value is held up by its use in curating content for news, celebrity drama, gossip, etc. I view it as an electronic tabloid magazine or something similar. Though Twitter posts have lead me to some good scientific substacks on occasion (I don't use Twitter, I just see mentions on Facebook).

I thought it was popular when it first came out, it was like a companion to Facebook in the post-Myspace era where users would post quick snippets of what they were doing on their day. "Just walked my dog on with a beautiful evening sunset!" "My wife and I having a wonderful vacation at Disneyworld!" etc. But now it's turned into a cesspool of political strife, excessive 18+ content, pronouns everywhere, NFT scams, hating others for having certain opinions, etc. It's now mostly used by politicians, corporations for outreach, political activists, cryptobro scammers, and deviants. Not the post-MySpace site for normal, everyday people to "chime in on what they're doing" like it started. It became a monster.

I think a part of the strange disconnect is happening because no one tweets about every movie/show they watch, they usually only tweet about movies or shows that they’re part of a fandom for or that think is popular enough for people to care what they have to say, and the larger the fandom, the more people who tweet about it, and twitter is mostly people in their 20s-30s There’s likely many *many* reasons for this weird discrepancy

Nah, not saying that isn’t the case but not the main point-more like Twitter is actually quite small and is literally mostly full of Gen Z and younger Millennials, but it doesn’t even represent those two groups well. The interests of Gen X and Boomers are not represented at all and gives this false idea to some of those Twitter users that because it’s not spoken about it on Twitter it must not be popular at all. Yellowstone shows that you can appeal to older audiences and not be popular on Twitter but still be widely successful. Maybe once Elon burns down Twitter, these Twitter users can actually get the sense of what the real world is like.
@paulghignon4092
@paulghignon4092 Жыл бұрын
@@Laura-Yu I think this is more than likely true. It represents a small portion of the population within a certain demographic. You also have to factor that twitter is also incredibly loaded with bots, and I've seen estimates as high as 80%. Dan Woods a well known security expert who's worked for both the CIA and FBI, has stated that it's very likely that upwards of 80% are bots. I've also seen extensive evidence of a particularly weird bot on twitter that will copy politically driven posts and repost them repeatedly. I don't think that the aforementioned bot is to drive for one particular party, but to drive engagement; as it'll get more real users talking. I genuinely think that these types of bots are what's driving this movie thing talked about in the video. If a movie has politically charged themes (regardless of left/right direction), it will be driven into trending by these same bots. Where exactly these bots are from no one really knows, but I've seen evidence of this first hand; such as identical tweets word for word within seconds of each other being posted by different accounts.

that’s what i was thinking. twitter’s main function with trends is to be representative of the most tweeted about shows, not the most watched shows. Add to that online fandoms tendency to produce a large amount of tweets about one show and it makes sense when shows with larger online fandoms also trend on twitter more. Also unlike some commenters, I don’t consider this to be twitter lying or as being a negative thing about twitter. Matpats video is just an example of how online spaces will always be representative of only the subsection of the world that actively uses the platform. And that perhaps companies should remember this when gathering information. 😂

it's not about Twitter being influential in any way. It's about the fact that Twitter has, before Elon got it, was used as a way for people in power, mainly the media, politicians, influencers, and people who have a voice get to talk about. And the Main flow of Twitter is very strongly US Democratic, even in other countries it's clear that Twitter was being used as a way to amplify things like racial representation. All Twitter is is an amplifier and only certain people controlled it. That's why you are seeing attacks on Twitter and Elon all by the US Democratic party. They no longer have full control over their most influential social media because it was all artificial, but for how artificial it is, people don't see that, and no matter how independent people are, they can and are swayed by the group. So if Twitter makes it look like the vast majority of people like or talk about something in a certain way, other people will inevitably gravitate to it and be consumed by it. The hardest thing for your average person to do is change their mind on something they care about.

Yes to be honest my parents are absolutely in love with the both first avatar movie and the new one so much that they watched it over 5 times together they even downloaded all the songs from the movie it was honestly the first time in my life I saw them so hyped for a movie they do not use any social media but they were so hyped for the release some people just rather be hyped quietly not just share about the hype to everyone in the world XDD

What's weird about Twitter is how much people talk about it on *other platforms.* How is it that it manages to punch so far above its weight class that its widely assumed to be the primary data point for social trends, even non-controversial ones?

I can tell you something, I have a twitter account and I use it maybe... idk a couple times a month at BEST, plus I basically use it exclusively to look at artwork and nothing else. I don't post, I don't really interact beyond liking the occasional thing, I just use it to be able to look at art I wouldn't see otherwise. I can guarantee a lot of people probably do the same. Also, even tho Avatar 1 did so phenomenally (and I loved avatar 2 as well btw) the lack of cultural impact it has had is just wild to me. Like, Among Us was 1 game that did the rounds on youtube like so many others have done and should have just vanished but people are STILL making references online to this day. Avatar? Nothing. Maybe that whole silent majority thing is partly why? I know my Nan and my parents loved the movie and they aren't exactly huge presences online

As an employee at a movie retail store that relies on Twitter buzz for our community’s media interest, this is very troubling to me. Especially since we are low on Yellowstone seasons. I've been wondering why there's been a surge in interest in that show, but we don't stock it because there's no interest on Twitter. Although, we must use trend analytics from other forms of social media, because we have an end cap for Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford, but none of the staff knows why.

I would actually say the conclusion of this episode was really obvious. What's far more interesting is how this is not that obvious to all these disney and sony movie makers and producers. Following news about the movie world for a long time, you really start to see how often they blunder specifically with audience analysis. Matt here did a better job just for some vid on yt than most of the people whose job is specifically analysing trends.

I think it has more to do with the marketing teams that they hire being really bad, while the execs ask for how they can get the biggest audience possible. This is especially noticeable when you see them try to make a piece of media and completely ignore the core fans of said media, which more often than not just leads to the whole thing crashing down. Nepotism and hiring the cheapest writer/showrunner does not help the fact that audiences can tolerate mediocre art/set design if the writing is good. But they will notice when a piece of media is all looks and zero substance.

Considering social media is by design where people go to chase clout by any means available to them, I'd have struck out the "surprisingly" bit from the get go. It's not the place where people go, lacking a better term, to "be real". Social media is performance, and people on it should be considered like characters in a movie, not their "actors".

I've never understood why people bring up Twitter a bunch. Even when it came out, it seemed (to me at least) like a little brother trying to live up to Facebook, but never really succeeding. I've tried it myself when it was a new thing, and it felt too limited, so I discarded it. This video has helped me better understand the same confusion I had about what's popular. I always just assumed the internet these days prefers to make popular that which is potentially controversial. Twitter does seem to be a big part of that ideology.
