With the release of the Hamilton musical on Disney+, it got my mind thinking. Now that Netflix movies and other streaming titles are being considered for the Oscars thanks to "the times", what about Hamilton? Does it count as a movie? It is certainly shot like one and we are treated to an up close, more film like depiction of the Broadway show. So, does that mean that Hamilton, like other streaming movie releases, should be able to win an Oscar? Well, Hollywood should get ready to get turned upside down by one Lin Manuel Miranda.

I totally agree with you, but I think he means that the role slaves played in the founding of America is completely brushed over, and that one time Sally is mentioned by Jefferson doesn't really give an accurate representation of slaves back then. Anyone who didn't already know that Sally was a slave could very well have assumed that she was Jefferson's wife or daughter.

Adin Silverstein Counter argument: the story is primarily set in New York. Yes were there slaves in New York at that time, yes. Would there be enough to justify having them have more of presence when the story is centered around an abolitionist, no. Remember that the one slave given prominent screen time, Sally, was Thomas Jefferson’s slave and was in Virginia. Thomas Jefferson was a slave/plantation owner, and Virginia was home to a lot more slaves. So in reality it is no more changing history than having a kind doctor who hated death, attend a public hanging in England during that century.

Hear me out on this one: I think this has more to do with keeping Hollywood's monopoly over film production centered in Los Angeles. Giving an Oscar to actors that would be covered under the Broadway League might convince Broadway to compete against Hollywood by managing film studios out on the East Coast, as opposed to keeping practically all major cinematic productions out in Hollywood. It's already a tough market as is with places like Bollywood and Chinese films being able to eventually open up to massive audiences that match the numbers seen in Hollywood. Imagine if they had to compete with a local competitor on the other side of the country? Could you imagine films competing for space in cinematic theaters where it's a battle over whether Hollywood gets more movies in a theater as opposed to Broadway? What if A-list actors started to leave Hollywood and work for film productions in New York, instead? What if Broadway decided to create their own film awards to rival the Oscars? I think the arbitrary definition of what can be given an Oscar has less to do with what defines a film and more ensuring that only Los Angeles-based productions are being recognized for their cinematography. It's one of the most defining rules right there at the very beginning: films HAVE to be listed in Los Angeles cinemas to qualify. I think Hollywood is trying to ensure that when it comes to the massive influence that American film-making has on the international market, they want it to be exclusively a Californian export. They do not want domestic competition.

I mean, in the past 10 years filmmaking in Georgia has been getting pretty big. New York has had a film industry of their own for a long time now but I think where they flopped was how hard they pushed “WE’RE IN NEW YORK CITY” in every single film. Georgia is very diverse and the film companies take advantage of that, there are many movies filmed in Georgia that, unless you take a look at the credits, you’d never even know.

Not that I don’t enjoy actors in movies/tv shows but movie editors can edit the movies and any little mistakes or actors can take as many takes as they want while people in theatre takes months to memorize their performance and do it in one take unlike movies

Funny thing. You know how if you start a program in Windows in admin mode, a window pops up asking if you're sure, and plays 3 notes to alert you? I don’t think you understand what filming is...People can have shooting schedules that are a lot longer than a 3 hour performance. They have to do reshoots. It’s not lax. They are putting on an extremely intimate performance, they are reeling you in. They have to learn new lines and rehearse new scenes everyday. It can be 14 hours a day for several days a week into the morning. So in conclusion: being an actor is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT

For anyone who's interested, I got a book a few years ago from a writer's festival, called "The Men Who Lost America" by Andrew Jackson O'Shaughnessy. It's a really interesting book with mini biographies of important British figures during the American Revolution. The author breaks down the men's personal lives, their politics, and their roles in the British defeat. For example, one general kept trying to retire, until the British won a decisive victory. He suddenly decided not to leave, subsequently lost, and tried to blame the prime minister and his cabinet for the failure. The book gets a bit monotonous near the end, but it's still fascinating to see the lives of these men. Victory really is written by the winners, since they were seen as tyrants in America, but as great leaders in England. Just thought I would throw this out here in case anyone would like to read it. As for the writer's festival itself, it was a lot of fun. I'm an author myself and, while I wasn't speaking at the event (I hadn't even gotten my book published when I attended in 2017), I still got to hear famous authors like Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry. I’s surprised Matt hasn’t made Theater Theory yet! HERE ME OUT!!!! The center of the logo could be the theater masks! I’m not sure what the color would be because literally the three colors I went to were red for curtains and seats, green for the lime light, and yellow for spot lights, and those are literally the colors of film theory, game theory, and food theory, but I’m sure there’s another color that would work! I would say purple, but than again my favorite color is purple sooooo. 😂🤣 And as long as he’s not using illegally recorded footage (which actually would still leave a lot of footage he could peak at because their are behind the scenes, interviews, TV performances, recordings like Hamilton, and movie versions) which I know Matt wouldn’t want to do, I’m sure he could have small sneaks of footage and songs!
