I am the last person you would think who would believe in "possession" but it absolutely exists. A lot of the cases probably are what you say they are. But I promise there are some that are absolutely authentic. You won't fully believe it till you actually experience it but I hope you don't have that experience.

If you listen to "actual" Exorcists, they say they test for exactly that first. Some of the indicators of possession that they test for, that can't fall under mental disorders are knowledge that the patient couldn't have and them being able to speak languages they couldn't have learned.

Once it sees you, it will stand on its hind hooves and chase you while blasting this horrific scream. It’s most commonly seen in areas with a lot of deer like the Appalachias. Of all the naming conventions for creatures/monsters in myths, legends, etc., the simple horror of 'Not Deer' is fantastic. Even without the description of what a Not Deer is, you instantly get the feeling that you might mistake it for a deer if you saw it, but there would be something inexplicably about it. Thanks for reminding me this creature exists!

As someone who has lived near reservations and heard many Native-American stories, their monsters freak me out more than anything else I've ever heard. I learned about the skinwalker from an episode of Ben 10 . In Ben 10, the Yenaldooshi was described as a werewolf which was half right since skinwalkers are shapeshifters and so were old school werewolves but this version merged the classic movie monster and the yenaldooshi into a hybrid of the two.

I do find it really interesting that these exorcisms... mostly involve, essentially, giving someone some care and attention. Clean up the room and ask them what's wrong Get them clean and bathed, surrounded by people trying to help them. You can really see how these would work, whether its a real spirit possessing them. Or someone suffering some kind of menral breakdown

What's worse about Wendigo possession is unlike most other demonic possessions is the person is completely aware during every other part of the process-I even read a story about a woman who had been cursed and unknowingly eaten human flesh (her curser had been feeding her) for quite some time flung herself in a summer fire because she felt so cold and knew something was wrong. The spirit doesn't take full control to the point the mind doesn't know what has happened or will know-it becomes you and you become it. A similar spirit situation is the Weshuge-someone who after a vision quest let an animal spirit guide get too much power over them. Still aware, still cannibalistic, but can eat other food and with difficulty CAN have their mind brought back. In that case it was accidental. Never ask for too much power is the lesson with that one.

For anyone interested, there is in fact an anime with this kind of premise, which is based on an unfinished Japanese light novel. It's called Ghost Hunt. You have a Catholic priest, a Buddhist monk, a Shinto priestess, a spirit medium, a Chinese guy that can use Shikigami, and a powerful psychic dealing with poltergeists and possessions. When I found and watched it the first time, I was surprised at the chemistry and dynamics of the group. They're all from different religions with their own ways of exorcising spirits. With the best part being that all these methods are, in fact, viable and work, depending on what sort of spirit you're dealing with. And there is one spirit you can't exorcise that the group encounters.

Having a Yurei/Yokai themed Exorcist movie would be really rad. Onmyoji (shinto exorcists) have been very much romanticized and fantasized in modern media. A more grounded, faith-based version without all the magic could be interesting, especially exploring their historical relevance.

As someone who studies islamic exorcism to become a Raqiyah (an islamic exorcist), your summary is actually really great! I would just like to add that Jinn, despite being relatively easy to exorcise, are extremely dangerous. The possessions often end up causing psychological and even physical trauma and plagues, and they are often very angry. Sometimes they can even be manifested by some humans to hurt other humans, which makes certain possessions very tricky to navigate. Some other forms of ruqyah include reading quran over water and certain oils and consuming these products, usually in the case were sorcery is involved. The names ifrit and shaytan are mostly synonymous, with shaytan being more religiously oriented and ifrit being more based in pop culture. Otherwise, everything you said was excellent and I'm proud to be a Muslim theorist! But yeah ruqyah is pronounced ru-k-yah, not ru-ka-yaah, but otherwise all good :D

I wanted to post something similar. Like he was right but the fear factor was very downplayed. I've been wanting a horror spirit or monster that inspires THIS kind of fear. It doesn't have to be this exactly, just something so revered that people don't even want to say it. Like Voldemort, but people actually avoid saying it. I think I'm a fairly rational person and I can say I'd exhaust every option before considering exorcism, but I do believe these things exist. It was cool to see it mentioned but I was a bit antsy every time he said it 😂
@princessjuliana7309
@princessjuliana7309 7 ай бұрын
@lulufan100 I'm studying exorcism obviously but I'm also studying social science to specialize in psychology. The more I learn about both the more it becomes extremely evident that one must know which kind of problem they're facing; spiritual or psychological. So if someone tries to exorcise mental illness then obviously it's not gonna work, but the opposite is true as well, and this is why I look at all options, medical, psychological and spiritual, equally. Another thing, I don't know if it's a great idea to make a movie about the jinn or the wendigo without either horribly offending someone (humans) or horribly angering someone (spirit). But yeah love your thoughts on the matter.

@@princessjuliana7309 I think since the knowledge and fear of them is largely cultural/faith based, it would be hard to put in a film. You'd have all this backstory crammed into a 1 to 2 hour film which would either lose people or not do it justice. And while I like representation, I'm fine with people skipping this part. I wouldn't even see the film if it were to come out considering I refuse to even type its name. I feel weird about movies using people's faith, anyway. The Conjuring movies don't scare me because I have to suspend my disbelief for not only a demon but for the solution and I often wonder what Christians and Catholics think of them. I had a roommate who didn't seem to mind them and I haven't seen any backlash in the news against them. I feel like that would happen in our community if the movie sucked, made stuff up, or seemed like it was mocking us. The first Exorcist was just terrifying, but they played the Adhan at the beginning so that helped. I really liked how they had the priest be the most skeptical, that kept it grounded in reality for me and made it all the more scary. I thought they left the ending ambiguous as to whether or not the exorcism worked, too. His human and faith struggles could be relatable to anybody even though he was Catholic. I think horror needs to be relatable for it to work. The Wendigo is also a touchy subject because I feel like people are either over it or the studios will make it into a generic monster. Maybe it could work if they worked with First Nation people who wanted to do it. It would be interesting to see it from their point of view. If not, I'd rather just read about it on my own. It was really neat running into another Muslim theorist and I was not expecting that on this type of video 😁
@princessjuliana7309
@princessjuliana7309 7 ай бұрын
@lulufan100 oh absolutely and I think that not everything should be represented. Like, yeah, you have stories like Aladdin which are less religious and more pop culture, but it only works in a fantasy setting. Horror would make the target audience (presumably muslims) very uncomfortable, and it's just not worth it at all. Maybe stuff from culture can be cool since they're just stories to us, but religion is not very easy to maneuver at all, even for me as a Muslim who likes to write islamic inspired things.

For the record MatPat, the Shaitan is not a type of jin, he is one specific jinn/demon who disopayed god and vowed to lead humans to sin. He is like lucifer, but in Islam we believe He wasn't an Angel, but a jinn that worked with the angels at first. And Plus, all Jinn are said to be Made of spacifically smokeless fire. And also, in islam nothing can come from the underworld, except angels that watch over the souls there.

I'm a Norse Pagan and Cherokee descendant as somebody who is half Cherokee. I like to say that your research on the wendigo was very good, but Norse mythology also has some demonic entities that would make pretty good final bosses for this franchise. Edit I'm also half Creek, according to my grandmother and she said when she was young they had to deal with a wendigo.

Regarding the Arab exorcism ritual, its very casual in concept but I've been in the room for an exorcism once. It's so much more hectic than you could ever imagine. The "possessed" individual is flailing around and screaming while the exorcist is trying dominate the jinn by reciting the Quran loud enough to be able to be heard over all the screaming. I wish no one has to witness anything like that, especially when it involves loved ones.

I remember reading a story on the wendigo. A woman encountered a wendigo, so in order to survive the encounter she decided to treat the creature as it were her grandparent. Eventually when her brother had gotten back from hunting and he saw the creature his sister pulled him aside and told him her plan. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details after the start, but eventually the wendigo asks the woman to make a sweat lodge and the man to get a constant stream of wood. I don't remember how long the story said it was inside, but eventually an old man emerged from the lodge and coughed out a frozen heart and instructed the girl to toss it in the fireplace. At least I think that how the story went, it's been at least an actual ten years since I last read that story

The Wendigo is probably one of my favorite spirit/monsters when it comes to myths and legend's. Thought it's to bad that it's been miss appropriated so much, both in that it changes a group of peoples culture to something very different than what it actually is and that it sucks that the whole deer skull monster we usually see with wendigos is bad,because it looks like a really awesome monster.

I'm glad Until Dawn gets wendigos right. It's only one game, but it's popular and is a good example of how they should be portrayed (with the usual amounts of artistic license). I'm still waiting on the "grows in proportion to what it eats" thing turning a wendigo into a kaiju equivalent. That would make a good movie.

yeah, feel you, there is a reason why tht design caught on that well . . . the truely unforgivable thing though is not changing the monsters appearance, but its essence. Making just a yeti that eats humans out of it destroys what the wendigo is about, kills all the nuance and what makes is so so scary. The deerhead makes kinda sense, its a pray animal so having that hunt you is scaryer for the broken trust in a way just how the wendigo turns your fellow men into a threat you cant easely spot. deception as in calling with a loved ones voice does belong to the wendigos nature after all

I definitely think you're right. The Wendigo would be an interesting final boss. These movies have so much based around faith/religion that it would be interesting to see one where there's a real world mental disorder equivalent that could be the explanation behind it. You'd be able to watch the film not knowing whether or not the person/people are truly possessed or suffering from a mental disorder. They could even touch on the morality of exorcisms and how they've been used in the past wrongfully/unknowingly, due to lack of knowledge, on people who were suffering from mental illness, just making their issues worse. It'd definitely be an interesting plotline for a story in this universe, while also bring some new things to the table like the new film is with multiple faith's rather than just one.

I'm really glad Mat did some in depth research on these so people can learn a little bit about it, especially Wendigo. Until Dawn did a surprisingly good job but a lot of other media portrayals focus on what makes for good entertainment instead of accuracy. I was just watching Halloween Wars this year, where they used the skeletal figure with antlers to represent the Wendigo. (They also said something about it being part tree?) But when someone made the comment "What is a Wendigo without antlers?" All I could think was "Correct."

Hearing the demon and/or the possessed person be referred to as “the exorcist” and not the person actually performing the exorcism is the spiritual successor (pardon the pun) to the monster (whose name is Adam) from Mary Shelly’s seminal novel being falsely referred to as “Frankenstein”.

2 thoughts came to my head when discussing the Wendigo. 1, the Wendigo is the equivalent to a real life zombie attack. So you have to blast it to pieces without getting infected by the spirit. 2, call up the WB studious to get Jensen and Jared to resurrect themselves as the Winchester bros to fight Wendigos like they did in S1E2. Those are really the only options.
