This review, originally posted in September 2011, has been re-edited for this new posting that's 1m 12s shorter than the original. Edits have been made to tighten up the pacing, shorten film clips, and a few insensitive lines. The episode that followed this one in it's original posting was When in Rome. The version of the film reviewed here is the Extended Cut, which is different from the one on Nostalgia Critic, which was the Theatrical Cut. Enjoy!

I'd be down to see Tom Hardy as Johnny Blaze, but that's just me. And I think they should have played it a bit more serious, but also allow for the silliness by letting his Ghost Rider persona be much more over the top and manic. Also, no stupid monster voice.

@neilprice5136 жыл бұрын
The Ghost Rider, in the comics, was one of the forces of Nature like Death, War, Famine, Pestilence, Entropy, Destiny etc. The Ghost Rider was supposed to be the spirit of Justice that became The Spirit of Vengeance when Mephisto/Mephistopheles/The Marvel Universe's Devil corrupted him. Well roughly speaking anyway as the comics got really confusing in the 90's and Marvel never really knew what to do with the character, so his continuity was all over the place. But that was the original character's premise. He was basically Marvel's version of the DC character "The Spectre" who is their "Spirit of Divine Justice/Vengeance" depending on the writer/story.

15:21 Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it stated in that same scene that Johnny only transforms into Ghost Rider "at night in the presence of evil", meaning it's _not_ something he can just do at will and demonstrate to Roxanne right then and there? The idea that a contract for a thousand evil souls is so dangerous is genuinely hilarious on it's own. A thousand evil souls? Mate, have you met humanity? If even 1% of people qualify as "evil", the devil gets to claim about 1600 evil souls every day (talking pre-covid figures... an extra 22.6M people have died over the past three years). This whole movie is predicated on a document worth 18 hours of the devil's soul harvest.

12:44 You complained about Ghost Rider's punishment of the mugger being disproportionate but Isn't the literal point of the "Penance Stare" that it reflects the pain and suffering a person has caused back on themselves? That is to say, kind of the definition of a "proportional punishment"? IIRC it's made clear that the guy wasn't dead afterwards (his eyes look fiery and weird but he blinks after he falls down), so he's "just" traumatised by the experience. It's been a while since I saw the film but I don't think he "had his soul incinerated" as you claimed.
@FilmBrain2 жыл бұрын
He literally uses the Penance Stare at the end of the film to kill Legion. That mugger's dead.
@Zomdra2 жыл бұрын
@@FilmBrain It's perhaps ambiguous but I don't think Blackheart/Legion died either, I think the intention of the scene is that he's rendered catatonic, the same as the mugger. Like I said, there's _pointedly_ a shot of the mugger blinking after he falls down that clearly only exists to confirm he _isn't_ dead after the stare. Granted, a cursory bit of research tells me the penance stare is kind of inconsistent and ill defined in the comics too re:whether or not it kills people but, at least as far as the film describes and portrays it, I don't think we're supposed to think of it as fatal. (Thanks for responding by the way, I'm sorry I'm splitting hairs over a decade old review of a silly movie, I've been a fan of yours for a long time and I'm honestly pretty embarrassed that I'm wasting your time on this, sorry about that. I really enjoyed your Blackbird review from last week and that Independence Day video you did recently.)
@FilmBrain2 жыл бұрын
I think you've misinterpreted the blink as suggesting he's alive, rather than an involuntary twitch of the dead. The film suggests that the Penance Stare literally incinerates a person from the inside, and later when Johnny revisits the scene, he shys away from a body bag being loaded up into an ambulance. I'm glad you like my videos, and hope you keep on enjoying them. Just think you might have misread this one. (It happens) 🙂
@Zomdra2 жыл бұрын
@@FilmBrain Update: Annoyingly I just wrote the long comment below and only then decided to check if the film's director said anything on this subject in the DVD commentary. He says during the mugger/Penance Stare scene: "You can see [the mugger's] eye blink there. It's a little CG eye-blink. I really wanted to make it clear that he wasn't dead. The Ghost Rider doesn't kill, at least not people. He never kills. That was important to me". So, that's that. The comment I was going to leave is kind of pointless now in light of that confirmation but I'll leave it here anyway since I think I made some decent points. *** Original comment: I really don't think that's the case re: the blinking, watching the scene I don't see how the blink could possibly be interpreted as a death twitch. When the penance stare is first described by Slade it's as "searing the souls of the wicked", I think that word choice is important since it doesn't imply the souls are destroyed. I know it's muddied by Blackheart and Ghost Rider using the term "burn" later, which does carry a different implication, but I still don't agree with the interpretation that it's supposed to be fatal; even "burn" doesn't necessarily mean "destroy". I think you've got things a little muddled on the body bag part, Johnny never sees it when he gets to the crime scene, Roxanne sees it a couple of scenes earlier and it's made clear that it's the body of the worker Blackheart killed, not the mugger (we see the corpse's blackened skin and the cops have a discussion later connecting the victim's sulphur poisoning to the bikers Blackheart killed earlier). Plus there's the fact that when the cops question Johnny later they only talk about that same Blackheart victim and the mugger isn't mentioned at all. I also just don't think we're supposed to think Johnny is lying when he's insisting to the cops in that scene that he didn't kill anyone (I mean, I know he kind of _is_ lying since he did kill that demon/elemental guy but I don't think that's supposed to "count" as murder under Johnny's/the film's morals due to the guy being what he was). For whatever it's worth, Mark Steven Johnson's screenplay for the film describes the Penance Stare like this (admittedly an earlier draft where the victim is a corrupt cop rather than a mugger): "Every act of violence, every evil he's ever committed, is revisited back upon him. This is the PENANCE STARE. And compared to this, death would be a welcome relief. OFFICER PLOOG falls to the ground, shuddering and glassy-eyed; his brain on eternal overload as he relives his sins forevermore." It describes Blackheart's fate the same way. I know, earlier draft, but much of the script is quite close to the finished film so it's something to consider. You have to at least admit, whether it's intended to be fatal or not, the film does a very poor job of communicating what the stare is supposed to do. Any kind of follow up on the mugger after it happens would've cleared this up easily. Whether he's supposed to be catatonic or dead it's rather odd that the cops don't mention or discuss him at any point.
@FilmBrain2 жыл бұрын
That's fair. I've not seen the film in a decade, and only tried to refresh myself with low quality clips. I'm not hugely knowledgeable on the character, so to me as just an average viewer, I just read them as dead. Given that it reduces them to an empty shell, it is more or less a living death, even if not technically dead.
