If you want to really see the depth of the King Universe you should read the Dark Tower, his Magnum Opus. If you're reading the series for the first time read them pretty much in order except you can read The Wind through the Keyhole between books 4 and 5. They are great books definitely worth reading. Though being unfamiliar with a lot of King's works you will miss out on stuff. One publisher actually when they list his list of other works places books associated with The Dark Tower in bold.
@darkashtar6 жыл бұрын
@Long duk dong while a lot do take place in the same universe and area, multiverse might be more apt because some are more like alternate universes all connected to the dark tower at the center of his multiverse. I go with that because you have a few books with world changing events that prevent them from being in the same universe like The Stand and Cell. But the Marvel comparison is more apt with the comics and its own multiverse.

In the novel, It is an eternal entity that can shape shift and change forms. After arriving on Earth, It would sleep for approximately 27 to 30 years at a time, then awaken to wreak chaos and feed (primarily on children's fear). It is able to take many more forms than the film adaptations depict, including werewolves, bats, leeches, and sharks. It could embody any of a child's worst fears. It apparently originated in a void containing and surrounding the Universe-a place referred to in the novel as the "Macroverse" (a concept similar to the later established "Todash Darkness" of the Dark Tower novels). At several points in the novel, It claims its true name is "Bob Gray", and is named "It" by the group of children who later confront it. Throughout the book, It is generally referred to as male; however, late in the book, the children come to believe It may be female (due to It's manifestation as a large female spider). In addition, upon seeing its true form Audra Denbrough thinks, "Oh dear Jesus, It is female." Despite this, the true form of It is never truly known. The final physical form It takes is that of an enormous spider, but this is the closest the human mind can understand. It's actual form is not precisely what the children actually see. Instead, the natural form of It exists in an inter-dimensional realm referred to by It as the "deadlights". Bill Denbrough comes dangerously close to seeing the deadlights, but successfully defeats It before this happens. The deadlights are never seen, and their true form outside the physical realm is never revealed, only described as writhing, destroying orange lights. Coming face to face with the deadlights drives any living being instantly insane (a common Lovecraftian device). The only known people to face the deadlights and survive are Bill's wife, Audra Phillips, and Beverly Marsh, although they are rendered catatonic by the experience. It's natural enemy is the "Turtle" or "Maturin", another ancient dweller of King's "Macroverse" who, eons ago, created our universe and possibly others. The Turtle shows up again in King's series The Dark Tower. The book suggests that It, along with the Turtle, are themselves creations of a separate, omnipotent creator referred to as "the Other". The Turtle and It are eternal enemies (creation versus consumption). It may, in fact, be either a "twinner" of, or the actual one of the six greater demon elementals mentioned by Mia in The Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah, as the Spider is not one of the Beam Guardians. It arrived in our world during prehistoric times in a massive, cataclysmic event similar to an asteroid impact, in the place that would, in time, become Derry, Maine. Throughout the novel It, some events are described through It's point of view, through which It describes itself as the "superior" being, with the Turtle as someone "close to his superiority" and humans as mere "toys". It explains it prefers to kill and devour children, not by nature, but rather because children's fears are easier to interpret in a physical form and thus children are easier to fill with terror. It says this is akin to "salting the meat." Both It's awakening and its return to hibernation mark the greatest instances of violence during its time awake. In one example, It caused the disappearence of over three hundred settlers from Derry Township in 1740-43. In 1957, It awoke during a great storm which flooded part of the city, whereupon It went on a feeding spree, starting by murdering Bill's brother, Georgie Denbrough. However, the children forced It to return to an early hibernation when it was heavily wounded by Bill in the first Ritual of Chüd. It is continually surprised by the children's victories over It, and near the end, It begins to question if It is not as superior as It had once thought. However, It never feels that the individual children are strong enough to defeat It, only through "the Other" working through them as a group. It is finally destroyed in the second Ritual of Chüd, and an enormous storm damages the downtown part of Derry to symbolize It's death. In the novel Dreamcatcher, when Mr. Gray tries to put a worm in Derry's water by use of the standpipe, It is no longer there due to the 1985 flood. In its place is a memorial featuring a cast-bronze of two children and a plaque underneath, dedicated to the victims of the 1985 flood and of It. The plaque has been vandalized with graffiti reading, "PENNYWISE LIVES".

Absence of fear was only It's weakness in the movie. In the book (and somewhat in the mini-series), it was more that It's strength in manifesting based on it's prey's imagination and fear locked it into a form that where it took on the same weakness of that form. Example would be the werewolf, which the kids thought silver would hurt (because silver kills werewolves). Turns out it did, because as soon as It chose that form, it was bound to that form's "rules" and while the silver didn't kill It, it hurt it badly. This is also true regarding Richie's sneezing powder, which did a number on It BECAUSE Richie put his faith into it working like that. The kids' imagination and belief was actually the key to fighting It, more so than lack of fear. In the novel, as kids and adults, I don't think there is a portion where ANY of them lack fear, but they carry on THROUGH the fear and fight back regardless of that. Actually, I think there was a bit of the "imagination power/power of belief" in the movie, but they didn't go more into it. Remember when Bill grabbed Mike's empty bolt gun, but didn't know it was empty. His belief that it had a bolt in it actually lead to a hole in Pennywise's head. That's in line with what was happening in the novel.

@@bomber101581 It's also a general concept that when something exists outside of time and space, its strengths and weaknesses hinge on concepts, not the physical realm. Things like IT are so far beyond mortal that it's basically only conscious validation that allows them to exist. Evil ones especially don't seem to believe in themselves, so they are easily defeated by others controlling their perception. Maturin on the other hand is probably self-aware and introspective enough that it can exist as a self-sustaining concept without the belief of others affecting it.

I thought that the adult townspeople subconsciously knew that some kids would be taken, like throughout Derry’s history, some children were sacrificed to protect the rest of the town, and that’s why the following happened: 1. people forgot about the missing kids very quickly, like, they didn’t dwell on them because they didn’t want to acknowledge the evil in the town. 2. The woman turned away from seeing Georgie lying in the road with his head in a storm drain in a downpour. 3. The hypochondriac kid’s mum said she was trying to keep him safe indoors, like she knew something bad could happen; and 4. The painting of the woman holding a baby at the mouth of the well.

It has more to do with the belief and will of the person opposing It and less to do with the form. The silver bullet works because seeing a werewolf, they believe that silver bullets will kill it.

@Fractalwizard 710 the clown is one of many forms, and Bill Skarsgard just plays that portrayal. Later in the book, IT is described as being female (and pregnant). Although, Its true form likely has no real gender as it's a cosmic being.

My theory about the relationship between It and Derry is that It had two bodies. It's physical form, which needed to feed like any other living thing, hence why it kills, and, being an entity born outside of our universe, It had an extradimensional form that encompassed the whole of Derry. It would explain why It's influence was so limited, because It could only control the contents of It's body, i.e. Derry and it's residents. It also explains why people tend to forget or their memories go fuzzy when they leave the town, and why the town's killings were so isolated, It's body would be considered a field of extra dimensions that the human mind cannot truly comprehend nor maintain what it sees there. Like when Scott Lang went into the Quantum Realm and didnt remember anything. (Spoiler Alert) Also, it would explain the destruction that Derry faced when It was finally killed. When the physical body was destroyed, it also killed (at least part) of It's extra-dimensional body, which was reflected by the storm. While It was mostly dead, a part of It may have survived, or It's extra-dimensional body continued to exist in a decaying state, which is why, in 11/22/63, the memorial plaque was defaced with the graffito "Pennywise lives."

5:37 on the shapeshifting part you forgot to mention about how Pennywise's shapeshifting can be used against him. As he shifts into a certain form he gains that forms weaknesses. While It can't be killed by these forms weaknesses it can be fought off if someone is in a position to exploit that forms weakness like a Vampires weakness to sunlight. On top of what you mentioned about the Serial killer Pennywise chooses the form of a monster clown because it has no Kryptonite. Also Pennywise can be locked into a certain form if enough people choose to perceive him that way and this form is further weakened if those same people choose to believe it has a certain weakness, it's why the kids in the novel and Mini series are able to take down Pennywise with an inhaler and a silver nugget shot from a slingshot. They're able to believe these things can hurt Pennywise so they do. Remember that part. "And this here is battery acid and it'll melt your face off!"

The dynamics of "It" is unfathomable. I had no idea.
@GreatOldOne98663 жыл бұрын
I kinda suspect King got his inspiration for IT by J.R.R. Tolkien’s Ungoliant, who was a primordial being from the void, who took the form of a spider. Ungoliant was Shelob’s mother and a servant of Melkore, who later became Morgoth. Sorry if I misspelled the names. Edit: I also know that IT is also very Lovecraftian inspired.

The original mini series is a little slow to get going but as a whole its great. The new(ish) movie is also worth a look. The book however, does a great job of detailing a metric fuck ton of information that helps understand a few different things the movies leave out. It also has a lot of useless info so be ready for that.
