I remember watching this when i was about 12 years old on television late at night when my dad had gone to bed. Probably the single scariest night of my life and its what got me into horror movies to begin with, although as i explored the genre ive come to realize that silent hill is one of only a few true masterpiece horror movies. The genre i think has a bad habit of just trying too hard to scare people with jump scares and generic fear tactics. This film does the genre justice by trying to dig deep into the elements of true fear, carving a world of discomfort and exploring the darker side of our psyche.

I mean there are good "elements" in Silent Hill, but it is NOT a good movie. There is like a 10 minute exposition scene that takes place in the hospital basement that made me want to blow my head off out of cringe. The people making the movie seriously considered an all female cast, hence why top list actor Sean Beens seems almost like an afterthought to fill in screen time. Finally, all dialogue in this movie is terrible. All of it. Terrible on purpose? Probably not. In a positive, the sound design and atmosphere are REALLY good. My idea as follows... Season I: A new "Origins" adaption which explores the history of the town, residents who experience all weird mishappenings and the cult that lurks behind the curtains. Further seasons adapt the stories from the Team Silent games except they would be greatly expanded. Every season is treated the same way like in Fargo that has seasons set in different periods of time but are still deeply connected to each other.

Harry was a good part in my opinion, he allowed the following coverage of the events unfolding. Showing the audience the surreal and supernatural distancing that Rose was experiencing from a lovers perspective, from feeling her shadow in the hallways, to seeing the door open in the ending. It shows the firsthand fall into a different world and her entrapment in a plain far from reality or fiction, but from an outside perspective. The ending was chilling when I first saw it, and Harry had a real part in why. She was gone, but right in front of him all along.

Initially I hated this film for its audacity, but over time I've come to appreciate the reverence and skill used to create and the commitment to capture the essence of the games in a digestible format that a moviegoing audience could appreciate. Sure, the plot may not be brilliant, but as a vehicle to hit all the essential elements of the first 4 games and to tie it in to genuine Western culture, rather than emulated Western culture? It's admirable and way more watchable and rewatchable than the overwhelming majority of game adaptations. I genuinely get the feeling that this was a director desperately trying to give movie audiences the feelings he got from the games and I respect that.

The first movie silent hill is by far the best adaptation of the horror,supernatural and survival horror game ever I've seen, christophe gans and Roger avary did Amazing job to created the horror survival and especially the special effects too😎👍

I think this was one of the most successful movie-video-game adaptations out there in that it really tried to stay true to the lore and for the fans rather than make it for the mass audience. As a Silent Hill fan, I loved it, but I guess all my playing of SH also made it easier for me to get the ending compared to friends.

How does it stay true to the lore? The towns power existed way before Alessa, Pyramid Head is solely connected to James and has no reason to exist in this movie, There is no unborn god, Dahlia is now a victim, Silent Hill is not an abandoned town. The burning of Alessa was a ritual, not an execution. I could go on, I enjoyed this movie visually but if you’re saying it follows lore, I have to question if you’ve played the games.

Fantastic explanation well done! I have seen this film many times and always had same questions which you have covered breathlessly. I too hated the death of the police woman, I really liked her character and how she protected Rose. I will now love this film more now I know the meanings behind it now. Thankyou again

Silent Hill is such a psychologically complex work of art.. It is both disturbing and interesting at the same time..

Please do Silent Hill: Revelation! I know its got some pretty low scores but just the world of Silent Hill is so awesome and you explain things so well it would be awesome to see a video on it.

This is a rare video game adaptation that hits all the markers of it’s original counterpart, and it succeeds where the Resident Evil movies starring Mila Jovovich failed. Silent Hill kept the core features of the game strong in the movie. The sense of dread and mystery, and the feeling of almost utter hopelessness, with the paranoia that the sirens bring. Whilst I’m not sure if the origins of the Ash and its creatures was ever explained in the games, Alessa/Sharon provides a surprisingly wonderful explanation to the Blight. It actually makes sense that the confused terror and rage of a child would create the creatures such as the living dolls and faceless nurses

In the game Alessas mother Dahlia tortures her in order to draw back Cheryl/Shannon to the town, the burning is actually a ritual to birth an evil god but it goes wrong because Alessas soul is divided (part of it is in Cheryl/Shannon) and so she has an unborn evil god inside her torturing her and feeding her visions of hell. In the game Alessa has powerful supernatural abilities which is why she is selected for the ritual, her powers are so potent it is her that is projecting the hell like otherworld inspired by the hellish visions from the evil god and her mother torturing her, the otherworld is Alessas nightmare.

Probably one of the more successful game-to-film adaptations. It didn't veer too far from the narrative of the games, but allowed for the development of new story without compromising the heart of the series.

The siren is like the clock bell in P.T. Silent Hills. Hmmmm? The circle prevented them from leaving until they did there task? Sounds like P.T. was taking old parts from S.H.!

Great job as usual boyo, Silent Hill is one of my favourite game films. Any chance you could do a video on The Wind That Shakes the Barley or the virus from REC?
@filmcomicsexplained6 жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy. I actually had to study the Wind that shakes the Barley back at acting school to nail down my Irish accent for a play and loved it. I'll add it to the list as it explores much of Ireland's tumultuous history. Also rec is on the list! thanks for the great suggestions mate and have a nice day :)

A little know fact about Silent Hill. Originally, Dahlia was supposed to be named Christie. It kinda explains why there is a Christabella, instead of Dahlia, being the cult leader. The game really is supposed to have Dahlia as the cult leader. So, in a way, Christabella is semi canon to the original concept of Silent Hill.
@agthaog19865 жыл бұрын
definitely 1 of the best game to film adaptations ...especially when u consider how much they kinda took from/ sprinkled in. in the end u get a great piece of art that fans of the game can appreciate yet at the sametime still make u think about the psychological aspect of the original game. i just wish they coulda continued n stayed true to it

Loved this movie. . . And im glad it had a female lead instead of male. She portrayed a mothers love excellently, maternal instincts are a powerful force and if it was a guy instead (not that im saying he wouldnt of tried as hard. . . Or any father for that matter) i just dont think it would of captured the extremities of how far a parent will go. . . Is the sequel any good? I havent watched it. . .
@doomslayer28196 жыл бұрын
Nope, the Sequel is pretty much Trash. The ONLY good thing about that movie is Piramid Head, which is a shame.
