Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be exploring Baron Vladimir Harko-nen and his Great House, as featured in Frank Herberts expansive Dune universe.
Siridar-Baron Vladimir Harko-nen, commonly known as the Baron, was the penultimate ruler of House Harko-nen , and the chief architect in the demise of Duke Leto I of House Atreides.
He was the scion of a family and house with a history of ruthless ambition and basically the main antagonist of Herbert’s Dune saga. As the Baron of House Harko-nen, he ruled from his ancestral homeworld of Giedi Prime, exercising a tyrannical rule of exploitation and sadism over the lives of the slaves unfortunate enough to end up in the service of his House.
A long-standing rival of House Atreides, the Baron is determined to bring about their end, with particular emphasis on seeing Duke Leto Atreides humiliated in defeat.
His House was by far the most famous for their underhanded and sinister political tactics, gaining power by diplomatic intrigue and assassinations.
Known for an ancient feud it maintained with Atreides of Caladan since the Battle of Corrin, the house had a reputation for ambition, malevolence, hatred and brutality.
In this video, we are going to explore the origins of House Harko-nen, the life of Baron Vladimir and the demise of the powerful faction throughout the expansive dune universe.

As someone who discovered Dune through the new movie, all I wanted was more Baron screen time. Whether he was in the Anti-toxic pool or when he hovers (floats?) in air, absolutely menacing.
@cordonez1625
@cordonez1625 Жыл бұрын
He hovers. To float you must be less dense than air. Meaning the Baron would need a humongous (like blimp) suit which would be too big. He would need to hover though “anti-gravity” technology which would only make him hover, and not immune to gravity.

Yeah, the prequel books actually give the Harkonnen's a lot more depth, especially the Baron who before he was a fat blob who needed a suspensor suit to hold his weight was actually a super ripped bodybuilder and explains how he ended up how he did.

Another thing that is absurd about how the books describe the factions is not just calling them all “Houses” but basically giving whole planets of people almost identical ideology whether it’s good or bad ideology. It is very similar to how Star Trek did it when encountering new planets. They always meet like a small delegation that speaks for the whole planet somehow and phrases like “my people” and “your people”. Whether it was necessary for the story or not, it reduces realism

I've tried reading the Dune series I made it through Messiah but I've got to be honest I didn't follow a lot of what I was reading. When Paul gets the dwarf I didn't understand one damn thing until the stone burner went off. Maybe you could do a chapter by chapter break down of the books for us who didn't follow because I can't be the only one that reads it and thinks "What just happened"
@One_Call_System

Its tough. You have to REALLY pay attention, and then reread it again. When i read im like,, what happened in the beginning of the conversation? Because by the end of it, my brain has absorbed so much I am lost. Also it gets really deep into philosophy and abstract ideas, that you kind of have to read into them a lot. Rereading chapters seems like the best strat but even then I don't think I will completely understand a lot of it.

Can't get over as a Finn that he got the name from a phonebook with the finnish last name Härkönen standing out as badass to him (if you could translate it's Oxlet in english, as most of finnish last names end with -nen or -let much like leaflet, so all surnames are pretty much like streamlet, grovelet), and even then he thought it was a soviet last name so he gave him a russian first name 😂. So every time am watching this movie am hearing Harkonnen as a finnish surname. It's like watching a film with Hans Smith as the main character.

I absolutely hate the backstory added that meant his obesity was an affliction given to him. It totally takes away from his character, the Baron chooses to destroy those around him, he chooses to be cruel and tyrannical, he chooses to abuse and torture people, it makes sense that his weight would be a choice, that a man who lacks responsibility for his actions wouldn't care about how others saw him, wouldn't care that it impacts him negatively. His weight is a symbol of his greed, making it an affliction makes him look like a victim of circumstance. I know it was a 'punishment', but the person who gave it to him is just as much of a villain as he is, just in a different way.
