There was a fifth ending where John Grey was revealed to have survived and made it back to Earth. In his debriefing, a DoD official reveals that they actually wanted Ben's body brought back to Earth - they were purposefully sent to get infected and return so they could study the Moon aliens' venom and turn it into a possible bioweapon against the Soviets, due to reports of them attempting to do the same.

I think they don't use the debris to purposefully camoflauge themselves. It'd make more sense that they're just dormant for such long periods that the moon dust/rock becomes coated on their carapace. Since they probably have gone millions of years without food, it'd be the only way for them to survive long enough until fresh prey arrived (though feeding on solar radiation seems more likely, they could've just been attacking out of defense of their territory and not for food).

These things are clever spiders and this planet has a lot more food than the Moon ever would even if it had multiple species living on it. Since they were delivered to important people around the world it would be noticed. I really like the horror of not only finding an unknown Russian vessel but also a corpse there. This movie had a super cool premise but was badly executed imo. There is a largely debunked conspiracy theory about Lost Cosmonauts which claimed that during the space race numerous cosmonauts died while attempting to do space missions but that the Soviet Union tried to cover up their deaths to save face. That sounds like something neat that the movie could've done with astronauts finding out a terrifying reason why they were going missing on the moon. Instead of space crabs perhaps something like eldritch horror could've been a better story beat.

Awesome video, I love the narration and explanation. Honestly, I think there was aliens that communicated through radio waves I think we would have detected them by now. Especially since all the radio waves sent out in the last 100 years or so. If the spider thingy's were annoyed or confused themselves. We probably would of seen that as background interference as well. Just guessing though. However, our governments are not the best when it comes being transparent about things haha. The evolution of those creatures is interesting as well because it looks like they evolved perfectly to survive on the moon with little nutritional and very little gravity. I'm not sure if they're bodies would have enough strength to do that type of damage to humans as the force required to not a lot on earth, but on the moon where there is 1/6th the gravity so the force required would need to be much more intense. The bite and slowly killing us is more likely. The other thing, if they use solar radiation as a source of sustenance why do they need a mouth? they don't even use their mouths to communicate like we do. They're bodies vibrate a certain way to form a slight radio wave frequency which they use to communicate and let's one another know where the other is. Similar to bee's I would suspect. Again all speculation haha like Niyat said. Maybe they're a predator, and maybe they're the prey. Ok, im done haha great video though. I think i want to watch the full movie now.

The footage of one crawling when you started talking about unused endings is clear/focused enough in shot that their legs look crab like & have pinchers. Anyway this was an interesting video & makes me want to see the movie again. I think I haven't seen it since high school.

This is one of my favorite science fiction films. Rather than make another Alien movie that's set on the moon, the Blair Witch narrative gives it an authentic feel. You feel as if you're back in the early 70s. The sound mixing is superb.

This is my personal theory that explains not only the existence of these lunar crabs/spiders but also fills in some other gaps of this movie. These creatures are most likely not native to the Moon. These creatures probably might not even be considered actual "aliens". My theory is that these creatures were somehow actually created on Earth as a secret bio-weapon for the US government/military to use against the Soviets should they ever reach the Moon. That would explain the lack of extraterrestrial incidents or disappearances from the previous Apollo missions as these creatures did not exist yet on the moon. The US government/ military knew it was only a matter of time before the Russians landed on the Moon and so it used all the data and information it gathered from the previous Apollo lunar missions to somehow bio-engineer a small crab-like species that is able to survive on the lunar surface and camouflage itself as a moon rock but also be extremely hostile and have a certain level of intelligence. I'm guessing that this species is also able to reproduce asexually. What more than likely happened is that the US government got wind of a secret upcoming Soviet mission to the Moon and sent a sample of this new bio-weapon to the moon on the last Apollo mission before the Russians could land there and had the astronauts release it onto the Moon before departing. The crab spider species then more than likely started to propagate and multiply and possibly even evolve further on the moon. By the time the secret Russian lander finally touched down on the moon the Russian cosmonaut was taken out by this new bio-weapon. This would explain the need for the Apollo 18 mission and the secrecy behind it. The US government / military wanted to see the results of its new bio-weapon and further study it in its new environment, so it sent an expendable crew of three astronauts to complete that mission, only for everything to go wrong, and for the government/military to cover it up. And because this new hostile species has pretty much taken over the surface of the Moon that explains why we have not gone back to the Moon. But that's just my theory.

Loved the movie poster for this film. Both terrifying and beautiful. Went into the movie blind with my bestie...we had the screen to ourselves. And even on a big screen, it was hard to make out what was happening. Only determining that rocks were occasionally moving. We both left feeling that the movie was wasted potential. Have never seen a home release for this movie.

If they did get back to Earth, they’d likely die pretty quickly. They are evolved to live on the moon, a place with a lot less atmospheric pressure than the earth. Would most likely end up like a blob fish out of water.

I still remember when this movie first came out - I was fascinated with the Apollo program at the time and remember going to the movies to see it with my family. Of course being a little kid, I got too scared and left the movie theater before they even got to the moon. I just watched the movie last night after years of mystery surrounding it and was a little disappointed. When the movie first came out the small glimpses from the trailer like the unexplained footprint next to the astronaut's foot print, the security cameras inside the lander, the darkness of the moon all made thinking about it very scary. Keep in mind this was 2011 so these types of horror films were becoming very popular and weren't burnt out yet. My disappointment was mainly the aliens themselves, I was expecting them to be humanoid like (the footprint) and slowly lurk on the astronauts. I do think that the way the movie refused to show the aliens in the trailers was a smart move, and it only made me 10x more scared to watch it. Also the ending wasn't bad, but I think the alternate ending where Grey makes it back to Earth was the best one. Overall this movie is pretty underrated and I think the atmosphere it potrayed was great, the reason why we never went back to the moon. They did a pretty good job considering their budget, one of my favorite parts is where they just find the Soviet lander sitting there, instantly amping up the creepiness. The nostalgia surrounding this movie definitely clouds how I feel about it, but let me know if you would change the aliens too!

I loved the movie because it talked about the Soviets landing on the Moon. Being a Cold War history buff and a proud American, I'm happy that we beat the Soviets to the Moon. However, I would love to see a movie which would show an alternate history about the Soviets ALSO making it there, wether they made it first or if they landed after we did. The special effects of Apollo 18 really makes it looks like the surface of the Moon, even better than "First Man" did. Though the movie tanked at the box-office, I still believe it's better than most of the garbage Hollywood is shoveling out now.

This is like the only conceptualization of a form of life as we don't know it that I actually like. Although a living organism's use of camouflage is a niche developed to compete with other forms of life in an ecosystem, I still just love the camouflage idea even if there was no other life on the moon to lead to that adaptation. It's just so eerie to imagine humans ignorantly concluding an absence of aliens on the Moon all while there are non-carbon-based lifeforms up there who are indistinguishable from the rocks and regolith.

The venom is what doesn’t make sense to me personally. Their camouflage/shell, as you said, could be to help protect them from the suns harmful rays. These creatures having venom could only mean there is an ecosystem of creatures on the moon. That or the director simply did not think so far as to acknowledge in some way that venom implies there is a reason to have it other than story driven plot.
@alexandersears8538 Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily. Sometimes things are just allergic to the bodily fluids of other things. Just because their secretions are venomous to us doesn't mean it's intended as a weapon. It simply means they have a different biochemistry because of evolution in harsher conditions. Their building blocks are different. If we ever encounter silicone-based life, it will be venomous and toxic to us, why? Because silicone is toxic to humans. Not because the lifeform has ill intentions.

It's possible, life adapts and evolves based on the surrounding environment. That being said, it is unlikely a moon spider would be physically stronger than an earthling or that the spider could survive long in an oxygen-rich, pressurized environment like the lander, or Earth for that matter.
