A Duke usurps his brother's land and power, banishing him and his entourage into the forest of Arden. The banished Duke's daughter, Rosalind, remains with her cousin Celia. She has fallen in love with Orlando, but he has his own tyrannical brother with whom to contend, so he joins those in the forest. Rosalind, now banished, disguises herself as a young man, with Celia as her servant, and follows Orlando into the forest. There, nature stirs love's fires in various rustics as well as in those from the court. Phebe, a shepherdess loved by Silvius, is smitten with the disguised Rosalind. Can true love find a way, and can brothers be reconciled and harmony restored?

It's clear that the manners of the period, 1930's come across stronger than the play. This feels serious when the play has a lightness and suggests the impending doom of the '30s. Bit like Shakespeare meets the Wizard of Oz.

I love Shakespeare and enjoy all the plays and this is definitely my favourite. Of course a lot of the best lines and passages are omitted here. Also Rosalind is played like a solemn or hysterical goose which is wrong. Rosalind is a picture of wit and here she is a divvy. A travesty, really. There is a zen saying, 'Poets should speak only to poets.' If you don't get the magnificent irony and humour of Shakespeare's Rosalind don't bother to play her.

The whole film is far too stupidly reverent and serious and almost completely misses the casual jester spirit of the wonderful comic plays of that era. The palbable universal wink of Shakespearean comedy is blinded with pretentiousness, particularly of Olivier who is a horrible Orlando. Orlando is certainly meant to be a noble buffoon. Olivier delivers him far too seriously and reverently. As You Like It is meant to be all fun. Shakespeare is making fun of everyone; nobody escapes. Everybody, perhaps with exception of Rose, who sees it, is a charecteriture. You could almost cut the irony with a knife. 'As You Like It.' Thrown at the audience like a drunken lord threw his purse at a footman, as Chesterton said.
