I’m gonna get flak for this, but I have to say it. Taskmaster and Draykov’s daughter should have been different people. Taskmaster should have been a merc hired by Ross to take out rogue Avengers, like Nat, and Draykov’s daughter should have manifested as a ghost of guilt that Nat carries. As we’ve seen in the past Avengers movies, Nat has huge emotional baggage as a result of what she did as a Russian spy. Draykov’s daughter could have appeared as an apparition to force Nat to truly face her past and forgive herself for what she did. Lastly, this movie should have been released after Civil War (the timeline of the movie). It would have given more emotional weight to losing Nat in Endgame.
@gaberielpendragon3 жыл бұрын
Said like some one who doesn't know how much of a pain in the ass it is to get the green light for movies. You can look at the history around the movie, there was basically no way to get it done before exactly right about now, pre-production didn't even start until 2019. Obviously it can't fit into the timeline where it released, but also this entire phase is all about exploring the greater timeline. Loki being a prime example. This movie sets up Nat's timeline through the MCU pretty tightly. That one time in Budapest being the only real gap we haven't seen on the big screen. Taskmaster works perfectly fine. It's very much the type of thing a control freak like Draykov would do. She also is still alive, so can be reused in the future. Then we have Loki, so Taskmaster variants can also show up in the future.

They repeat the issue regarding black slavery and other related topics (though for some reason only the American problems are relevant somehow, just ignore the problems of 1 billion African people around Wakanda) throughout the film, and then they're like "we're gonna reveal Wakanda to the world and that will somewhat end racism or something", and then they build some apartments in Oakland (?) and then they all die in Infinity War, so they won't have to touch this topic for a few more films at least. It's superficial because there's no weight to their actions, no proper payoff, just the mention of a dark topic, then back to status quo. The best way I can describe this movie is "It feels like a sequel to a movie we wanted but never got". Imagine how much better this movie would have been if it was a sequel. If the first movie was seeing Natasha and her upbringing in the Red Room and her going on missions, seeing her internal conflict or lack thereof due to how she was practically brainwashed, until she's stopped by Clint then recruited by SHIELD. She then goes on to have the mission in Budapest and then forced to make the controversial and morally challenging action of bombing the building with Dreykov and his daughter inside, seemingly killing them both. We then lead into Nick Fury approaching her for the mission against Loki in The Avengers (2012) Now, we have the second black widow movie in which we have already paid respect to her character and can follow up on this and introduce Yelena (the movie as is is a passing of the torch to her). We see Nat on the run following Civil War, trying to stay safe and out of the public eye. We get rid of the scene of Task Master being sent on the mission so when he shows up it's more of a shock (also, just make it not Task Master please... I don't care that they genderswapped her except that it was so forced and the fact that the Task Master is played by a man whenever the mask is still on lol. But don't waste the character making her just another victim and then also reducing the impressive skills of a photographic memory for fighting to being tech based. You can still have Dreykov's daughter be a masked villain going after Natasha). Then cut to Yelena being ruthless and killing and going on her missions when she gets introduced to the gas or dust or whatever that frees her from the control, but don't show the results of it just yet. That way, there's actually suspense when Yelena and Nat fight as we don't know already what the gas did to her, and can have Yelena explain it to Nat (instead of what we got which was seeing the gas free Yelena and then her having to ALSO explain what we just saw to Nat). When Yelena reveals to Nat that the Red Room is still active and that Dreykov is still alive, there is a sense of tension and shock as we all thought we saw Nat kill him and take down the Red Room in the last movie (unfortunately, what we instead got was a case of 'Telling' instead of 'Showing'). Blah blah the story progresses, the get the Red Guardian out (and, unlike in the movie we did get, he's not just reduced to a walking joke that only exists for comedy). We meet with Melena and Nat is suspicious right away. Build up the tension as Yelena and Alexei bond. Have Melena reveal she already contacted the Red Room and then don't cut away right away, let the scene sink in. Blah blah they get captured and brought in to the Red Room and the twists are revealed. Let Alexei actually handle his own against the Task Master instead of getting clowned on and needing Melena to save him. The story progresses and we get Task Master revealed as Dreykov's daughter, now it actually has a meaning to us as we saw Nat bomb the building and supposedly kill her (but again, I would prefer it to not be Task Master, but I digress). From then, the story can progress the way it does and we end with Nat going off to join the Avengers with her new hairdo and vest. Bam.

I also think making the daughter mind controlled really ruins her character, because if anyone should have motivation to kill Natasha, it’s her. She’s already established to be different than the Widows, and is the daughter of the main villain. Not to mention that would explain why she’s not afraid to risk being exposed to the public or attacking an Avenger because she’s not motivated by hiding in the shadows and helping the Red Room, but getting revenge. What bugged me the most about this movie, is the action. I mean, it's a marvel movie sure, but the stunts and action that Natasha easily lives are just too much. Many stunts are even more brutal than anything that Steve Rogers has ever done and that dude is a super human, while Natasha is just an ordinary woman with some good fighting techniques. I can believe her falling of a bridge and living it, but falling down like 10 metres from a building, bouncing onto various metal-boxes and just walking away from it like nothing happened, is just too unrealistic. She's not wearing any cyber suit like tony or anything and she just lives it, while the other woman that fell from almost the same hight, couldn't move more than one arm. The movie is okay, but really should've been made for 2016 and not with that stupid post credit scene-lie, that Hawkeye is responsible for Natashas death. That really destroys the scene in Endgame. Both Natasha and Clint were eager about dying for one another to get that damn stone and now some random Woman accuses Clint for Natasha's death, when he was also ready to sacrifice himself?

It was this guy…no he’s dead…no actually it is this guy. Let’s get this guy. So no suspense from that angle too. This wasn’t a bad film. It was just made and released about 4 yrs too late. It they had made this straight after Civil War, then it would’ve been better because no one would’ve known the outcome. That is why it doesn’t work as a thriller. No more Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, time to move on. I agree. After this movie, it really showed how insignificant Black Widow's arc was in the MCU. The first act had me exckted- "Oh shit, we might actually get darker moments in an MCU movie. This's gonna be different. " Nope. As much as I hate this criticism, this movie proves at least for now, things are getting formulaic. The reason I got attached to the MCU wasn't because of the levity and humor, it was the sentimental character moments. The moments I felt loss, anxiety, and cried for this characters. Black Widow and Taskmaster feel wasted. Also, the movie didn't really play a significant role into anything whether it be for a post-Endgame world like the shows or create the Dark Origin that creates sympathy and allows us to feel proud of how far Natasha has come. WandaVision made Infinity War hurt more. Helped me realize just how much I was misunderstanding Wanda. Her relationship with Vision tops Cap and Peggy because of it. I understand that Marvel is family-friendly, but I think most people who watch are ready for more mature themes like grief, racism in our society, or something that relates with us. So by the time she's older she has effectively taken over the project and is hammering down even harder for no widows to escape because the one that did killed her father and severely disabled her. I don’t know anything about writing, so I am not trying to say that I could have done it any better. I think that the movie is pretty good, but I was a bit let down, because of the wait.

I WISHED they would've used elements of the red room that they established in Agent Carter, it's grounded, they used innocent things like disney movies, dormitories, the school-like setting, etc or even that red room scene in Age of Ultron. THAT is the red room that interests me, I was so excited to see the red room in Black Widow but was disappointed when it wasn't the dark psychological aspect of things, instead we got a CGI monstrosity of an aircraft and pheromone locks and shit... The movie was okay but I was expecting more since Natasha's story through out the other movies is so interesting. I was disappointed but still cried at the sight of her.

In theory, a rather interesting spy thriller could be made from a solo film about Black Widow, but in the end we got a typical Marvel movie. The only thing that I can single out from the advantages of the film is: the intro, the first 20 minutes and Elena Belova performed by Florence Pugh, she is beautiful and I look forward to her in future projects, a worthy replacement for Natasha. Anything about this moive afeter first 20 minutes goes wrong (villian, plot, etc.) And the film itself is bad, although it could be better.

And while the sense of storytelling was clearly buckling down with Endgame given its many characters and ambitions, Black Widow (and Falcon and the Winter Soldier for that matter) can easily be written to have a smaller-scale impact in the context of the MCU which should help in allowing them to have a pared-down story similar to Captain America: The Winter Soldier to continue in their spy/conspiracy thriller genre. Because it's clear that Jac Schaeffer & Ned Benson (for Black Widow) and Malcolm Spellman, Michael Kastelein, Derek Kolstad (of John Wick and Nobody fame but it's clear that those films were good for their action and not their writing), Dalan Musson and Josef Sawyer (for Falcon and the Winter Soldier) aren't doing justice to the characters they're handling imo, at least within the MCU

@@maxdrags3115 I stated an opinion that people can agree or disagree with, and in the end I can only speak for myself. To answer your question, I feel Black Widow fails as an MCU movie because it doesn't add anything to the larger world. I can't think of any concept introduced here that'll return in any way. Aside from Yelena, and possibly Red Guardian, I can't see how or why any other character would return. Most other MCU movies know what they are trying to be, and have a cohesive plot. Black Widow is incoherent, full of holes, and doesn't answer any questions brought up by the plot. The MCU has emphasized it's main heroes, showing us why we should care about them when introduced, and adding new layers in subsequent appearances. The movie succeeds introducing Yelena, but fails to give Natasha any new development or a satisfying conclusion to her story. Not all MCU movies do these things perfectly, but I think Black Widow doesn't deliver when other entries mostly do. If you think Black Widow succeeds on these points, great. I feel like what hurts the movie is definitely the ‘bad guys”. Taskmaster was nerfed, the widows barely had a screen time, and the main bad guy power was they could hurt him because he smelled? Also there was no point the the masked body guards (males?) why not just make them widows? Like an older bunch that completed their training instead of faceless henchmen.

they took this stuff of the scent out of a Black Widow comic. In the story this is much better developed, the smell makes her feel a very strong family love for the person, being unable to even think about harming the person while she is smelling the scent

Master was nerfed? They literally never lost a single fight. The only way to defeat them was to lock them away or use pixie dust. Did we watch the same film?

@@infinitedm5396 Yes, nerfed compared to the source.

@@Cheoo I'm not seeing any ability comic taskmaster has that mcu version doesn't. The only real difference is the lack of speaking.

The flashbacks in Age of Ultron were more compelling than this movie. Say what you want about Whedon but I think he nailed Black Widow

💀 I did like those Red Room flashbacks. But Whedon DEFINITELY did not do Natasha right. Thank god for the Russo brothers.

Black Widow writers must have seen that flashback and went "Yep, that'll be the movie about"

The childhood section of this movie was so good. I wish the whole film took that tone.

Trueee. That and the editing effects right at the end of the childhood section. If that was the grading and effects style for the entire movie, it'd have looked so much better.
