On the other hand, as a producer, he had to make a ton of choices for the mission impossible movies together with the director who he picked. All this to say, he does have a good creative vision

The designated Diretor for The Mummy Alex Kurtzman (you might know him from the NuTrek shows) had no experience with big budget movies and as soon as Cruise realized that, he took over production. Officially, of course Kurtzman was in charge. Unofficially however, Cruise decided everything and the entire cast and crew were rather willing to listen to an established Hollywood Star than to a newby. It went as far as Tom Cruise telling Kurtzman which lenses to use for the cameras and he had the script changed to give himself more screentime and took some away from the Mummy. The Mummy was Cruise' movie through and through and that happens when he runs unchecked and doesn't work in concert with people whome he respects.

Watched Minority Report recently. It's a great sci-fi movie. The graphics look good for a 2002 movie, the futuristic designs of buildings, vehicles, and weapons are interesting, and the story is fun to follow, which I cannot say for some other sci-fi movies (like the Total Recall remake).

Personally, I thought the extended Total Recall remake was more interesting than the original. It seemed to focus in more on the core concept than the original. While one could argue the original had a more interesting world, what with Mars and mutants and whatnot, the remake had a more basic "sci-fi future" so as to not distract from the key concept: is any of what he's experiencing real? Granted, I think the extended version does so far better. The non-extended version leaves out some key scenes that actually do explore the concept, so the "normal" non-extended version does seem pretty bad in comparison.

I don't see this as the most unrealistic thing considering it's not about the current time but somewhere in the future where the legal system has changed. 20 years ago something like this sounded like pure fiction but seeing how things are going I don't even think it's that unbelievable that something similar could happen in few decades. Just instead of drug induced prophets would be more likely to be an AI algorithm. Even now there is this PTRA (Pretrial Risk Assessment) that is "used to estimate the defendant's risk of failure to appear, new criminal arrests or technical violations" (direct quote from US courts web site) and the whole point of it is to predict future troubles based on previous behavior, race, sex, where the defendant lives etc. I know it's not the same thing but still it's in the same direction, you can get more or less punishment based on algorithm. Plus the way targeted ads have become so aggressive to the point people think it reads their mind, that its literally scary. So we already use algorithms and software to predict future behavior. I don't think it's sci fi anymore to think something similar can be applied in the near future for "pre crimes" collecting a database for every citizen and predicting what someone could do and the thing is a lot of people will actually support it.

I actually think that using that scene from The Aviator is a really clever way to explain scene momentum to screenwriters. Scenes are boring with nothing behind them, there needs to be context there that makes the scene worth something

I'm in that spot now. Trying to get my teen daughters to watch good 90's and early 2000's movies. My endeavors have been somewhat futile so far :) It's always "nah this look boring, I don't want to watch this" I've just had to accept that girls aren't that into sci-fi. Matrix, Terminator, Aliens, can't get them to watch them. Still, I've managed to make them huge LOTR fans. It fills me with a sense of accomplishment that they actually loved one of my recommendations and for once we can agree that this is a great movie ;)

Just the other night I was showing them bits of Minority Report and Matrix. Tried to get the interested. No go. A comment they make a lot is it just too out there, too complicated. They want something that's a bit more grounded. I think they will eventually watch those movies and find them good, but maybe it's not just their thing. I didn't wait till they were teens to show them LOTR. They had plenty of chances to see it as it was on at least once a year when we watched it with the wife. It's a long and slow movie for a small kid to pay attention to.

People need to remember one very important fact - a Director is only as good as the script that they are directing. Without a Grade A script they are just people doing things and getting paid and are of no real value. Spielberg would be nothing if he didn't have great material to work with first. Remember that.

I think I'm biased with this movie because I read the book a couple years prior to it being released and I loved the book... but I really think this movie was criminally underrated, it's a great movie through and through, a real treat if you like sci-fi. I regard it as one of Tom Cruise's best movies. One of movie's best design decisions that helps strengthen those points is the presentation of the visions. On one hand of course you have these broken streams of "footage" that need to be analyzed to find clues, adding suspension for the ticking clock. However the haunting, nightmarish presentation with disjointed, distorted footage & sound (+music at times) makes the viewer more uneasy & tense while watching it, as if it were a horror movie; and emphasizes that the culprits (especially in the opening case) are becoming something inhumane or monstrous in those moments. It compliments the tension of the plot because the viewers are now further conditioned to be scared of the potential outcome of the heroes failing to stop said visions. Days of Future Past may have you engaged as you want to see the dystopian future prevented, but the visions coming true in Minority may even cause you to shiver in fear instead, depending on how you reacted to them prior. Especially when Anderton reaches for the pictures on the bed and you can directly see him succumbing to the dark side for lack of a better description, it's more terrifying to watch , based on what f.ex. Howard Marks was already depicted as prior.

Ironically, yes... there was a tv show im 2015 that worked as a sequel for the movie (basically a detective joins forces with one of the twins who can see the future). Sadly, it didn't make it a second season but at least two actors from the OG movie reprise their roles

They really used their premise really well. By setting up the effect of the cause before the action takes place makes it really easy to justify the pacing & decisions of the movie. Which leads to race against time since the cause and effect of future are still constant and fixed , and we know that from the previous incidents that no matter what the incident will happen and no force within that universe will change that outcome. And with no need to introduce the char in depth till they are needed for the story.

Funny thing is that, despite the popularity around the internet of saying, almost automatically, "no spoilers" and, in general, the obvious animosity towards "spoilers", THIS is exactly what I say when I declare that no only that I don't mind spoilers, but I actually prefer to be spoiled - it gives me a frame of... well, movement, which increases my enjoyment (there is actually some research on it). Speilberg's genius in the sci-fi movies he's made is that the stories are very detailed. The characters are well developed and (usually) complex, even if they're in the movie only for a short time. The tech is also well thought through but with Spielberg, it feels more mundane, similar to today's smartphones or laptops. But what sets Spielberg apart is that he portrays groundbreaking tech with dire consequences if abused or unwisely applied. The benefits of being older and witnessing the horrors of nuclear weapons and the surveillance state.

The great thing about this film that A LOT of films get wrong these days is that despite the precogs the events that ramp up tension ALWAYS occur in order or at the same time. A lot of films 'cheat' at this by having the 'tension building events' end up being a flashback or the timing of events being meaningless - eg Wakanda Forever's UN speech being intercut with the raid on the outreach centre, or Wanda's actions in Multiverse of Madness always taking a 'pause' whenever the film needs something else to happen - removing any urgency and stakes from the prior scenes. This is why Infinity War and Minority Report worked so well - because the timing of events is never used to undo the tension of the scene prior..instead each event works to build UP the overall tension of the film till the last moment.

In the theater there was often an audience buzz from moments that didn’t seem to work including the comedy of Anderton chasing his eyeballs down the sidewalk and the precog girl shock screaming a warning. There’s also a cop who has a seven-figure apartment and car, CGI spiders that seem beyond the given technology, black-market eye scene where you can’t tell what’s happening, rocket-pack cops that look like flown on wires, and visual fatigue from everything looking like it was shot inside a stainless steel paint bucket.

the super early 2000s had this style in futuristic movies that I have no word for it. When you watch Minority Report, Time Machine, A.I they all feel like the future cities and societies got made by the same person. maybe it is the stlye of CG of the time and also all the bloom they put in movies

This movie is a masterpiece. TC and SS are on top form here. The supporting cast is great, too. Von Sydow, Farrell, Morton are all great here.

I will say, while I agree the segments he's speaking about at around 4:00, can be seen as arbitrary; there is a really great philosophical debate between Cruise and Farrell that carries the sequence. Giving it a lot more character weight and introducing a few central themes/ideas
