It was a film that could've been great. However, they ran out of money near the end, so the climatic final scenes were ruined by hiding the action in darkness. This happens a lot in modern movies that rely on CGI. Film producers force deadlines and deliver substandard work instead of coming up with more money and giving more time for post-production workers to do a better job.

And even to the very end. *SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER* The audience gets what it wants, the love story can go on, but in a way that follows the concept. Tom Cruise has lost his ability, Emily Blunt is dead, and Cruise blows up the Omega, killing himself in the process. BUT, that means he is washed over by blood again, and now from the Omega itself, regaining the ability. He is moved back to even before he lands in London. And the Omega, which exists simultaneously in the present, future and past, is dead, so mankind has won, and Tom Cruise, now still an officer, can go look up Emily Blunt. Genius. We got the sacrifice to save the world, AND we got the love story, in a very smart way.

LDR is actually based off of the Japanese Light Novel series All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. So technically, this is arguably the first, good western anime adaptation.

The sword mentioned at 7:10 actually makes even more sense than that. In All You Need Is Kill it’s explained that the Mimics are extremely tough to kill and Rita needed a weapon that wouldn’t run out of ammo, inspiring her to use weapons in hand-to-hand combat. This was only possible because she was able to master the exoskeleton and push it to its limits after looping so many times. I’m surprised they left that detail out of the movie because it perfectly explains why Rita is carrying around a bigass anime sword but no one else is

The sword is also very believable because it`s made from a blade of a helicopter rotor. It`s not a ridiculous anime sword but a piece of the war machines which drop the soldiers into combat.

It also does a great job of not treating their audience like they are idiots. They never tell us how many times he resets but they show his improvement throughout and show his depression when he has failed countless times. It's a true testimony to "show don't tell".

I loved this movie and I saw it when it came out. I like how Emily Blunt is a "strong" woman, but she is not a Mary Sue nor is she perfect. She works with Tom Cruise and sees him as an equal and not some stupid man. I wish more movies had men in women working together as equals and not seeing each other as competition.

For example, Charlie's Angels (2019), Captain Marvel (not really the movie, but her character especially in End Game is just terrible), MIB International and Cruella. There are most likely more, but the fact that big studios don't realize what the problem is and continue to make the same mistake means it still needs to be said on how to do a powerful female character correctly.

"Edge of Tomorrow" was the original title of the film. Live.Die.Repeat. was NOT a subtitle, rather it was a TAG LINE. The promotional posters featured in big, bold lettering starting with Live. Die was right under followed by Repeat right under that. Under all of that, in small lettering was the title of the film "Edge of Tomorrow". This confused movie goers when they went to go see T.C.s latest action film, Live Die Repeat and didn't see that on the Marquee or in the papers, internet, whatever. Fans of the movie felt like "Live.Die.Repeat." should have been the title of the film, because it's freaking awesome and the marketing material made it seem like that was, indeed, the films name. Upon home release, it started getting marketed as "Edge of Tomorrow: Live.Die.Repeat". Changing a released movies title would be stupid, thus it stayed "Edge of Tomorrow" and they added "Live.Die.Repeat." as an official subtitle. For those that do not know, it is based on a Japanese Manga series known as "All You Need is KIll". Edit: I should add that some places advertise it as "Live. Die. Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow", some still call it just simply "Edge of Tomorrow". Anyway, it's STILL confusing to this day.

Fun Fact: Rita's sword is based off a broken helicopter blade in the manga "All you need is kill" which she picked up after running out of bullets for her exo-suit. She decided to stick with it because she kept running out of bullets but the *helicopter style blade = infinite kills*

This is a movie where a woman was shown as superior than the male counterpart, and the male had to work very hard to reach her level. All done with great respect to both characters. This is a better example of gender equality than any Mary Sue movies of late. PS - Agree with a lot of you, the underlying message is that the female counterpart went through just as much pain and hardship to get to where she was, which is a very basic plot beat in Japanese storytelling. People don't get strong just because they're "special".

The very first scene with Emily Blunt, where she is parallel with the ground but holding herself up with her hands, is actually real, she did that. A very fit woman. So with her, the strength is believable. But I have to say, knowing that for example a young and fit woman only has the grip strength of a man age 65, and 40% of a man's upper body strength, and less capacity for muscle growth, it's absurd to constantly show women as capable-or-better fighters. Plus, I'm sorry, they lack the testosterone that boosts the right fighting spirit. Women with civilian roles in war zones, like driving a supply truck, have more PTSD than men who do the actual fighting, as was shown in Afghanistan and Iraq. In movies you never see that. And you always get the "Hey, women can use a bow and arrow, that doesn't require strength!" Oh, really. Those who compete in archery have to do weight lifting to pull the string on a pro bow, which is extremely tough. I have tried it. Where do people think the force behind the arrow comes from? They think it's like flipping away a rubber band?

The thing i love about Edge of tomorrow is that it follows the source material so greatly, it doesn't change the rules about live die repeat of "All You Need Is Kill", they may have changed some stuff but the movie is still quite literally one of the most successful live action adaptations of a comic/manga/anime/novel

"Edge of Tomorrow" remains my all time favourite film. Tom Cruise presentation and acting here is superb, along with Emilie Blunt. The Sci Fi Action Wideshot Panorama Scenes are nothing to sneeze at. It's also for me one of the few cases where I would be absolutly okay with it being a standalone film, meaning there doesn't need to be a Sequel or a Prequel. And, to mention, the Manga/Visual Novel it is based off of, "All you need is Kill" by Takeshi Obata, the Creator of "Death Note", is just as fantastic and depicts war beautifully horrifying with a different, but not worse, ending.

Where do you get that Sakurazaka made Death Note? Death Note was written by Tsugumi Ohba, and drawn by Takeshi Obata, who did the art for the manga version of All You Need is Kill. Beyond the manga version being drawn by the same artist, there's no connection between Death Note and All You Need is Kill

As someone else here has pointed out, this film draws heavily from the manga it was adapted from. That story, All You Need Is Kill, is quite superior to the film -- but then, it has the benefit of being able to tell a longer tale with more and better character development. In that version, the male lead has gone from a whinny rookie to a stone-cold killer veteran by himself through death after grueling death long before he engages the female co-lead about their situation. Furthermore, the manga plays out much more tragically by introducing additional rules and stakes compared to the film's happier ending. It's a fascinating read.

Fantastic breakdown of, what I consider to be, one of the most underrated sci-fi action films of all time. Everything about this movie was perfection, and it all feels so grounded and real. The CGI was incredible, and the fight scenes were top notch. Not to mention, it was refreshing to see Cruise in a "clueless" action hero role, and we have to watch him get better throughout the film. Emily Blunt was just as great, and the soundtrack just elevated the movie's epicness to a new level. The marketing is what killed this one. Easily should've grossed every bit of $1bil in the BO! This is what movie theaters are made for!

The "Groundhog Day Loop" is my absolute favorite fantasy concept, in pretty much whatever medium it shows up. I remember being blown away by an episode of the Aladdin TV show as a kid when I first encountered the idea of a loop. Then, I played Majora's Mask for the N64 and it's one of my favorite Zelda games of all time. Then I saw Groundhog Day, and then this movie, then in episodes of Star Trek and Stargate... Gaaah just so many good ones out there and it never gets old

@@Grasslander what are you talking about? You're making it sound like women are these fragile weak people when that's just completely untrue. Yes, technically, men are stronger on average, but not 40% stronger, and not to the point that every woman except Emily blunt is weak and frail. Your comment about PTSD doesn't really make sense, and your random rant about archery isn't related at all. The fact that men are a bit stronger on average is a pretty archaic concept that only really matters when you take literally the strongest men and women and put them into something like the Olympics, where the divide does show, but in pretty much any other situation with a random pool there's no difference, like in the military. It's stupid to say "women historically have been slightly weaker than men on average so none of them should be represented in cinema" Don't rant about this stuff in a random KZbin comment. @@Grasslander Yeah but Edge of Tomorrow establishes that Rita trained for so long in the time loops she went through that she built up that strength. They establish at the beginning that she was inexperienced and then they believed the exo-suit gave her better fighting capabilities. But you find out later that Rita was in that time loop over 300 times. So her training and fighting abilities were earned. Also, it could be argued that she does in fact suffer from PTSD given what she's been through. It would explain how withdrawn and numb she becomes to personal relationships. But, as a soldier, she pushes it down and continues the fight.

General audience is WAYYYY more simplistic than we assume. People don't even care to understand what's happening in the movie right in front of their eyes unless a hero or a villain spells out the entire plan. People just wanna watch an explosion filled exposition dump to just cross reference to later and basically negate any actual discussion by counter-pointing "well that guy said so in the movie and thus it's fully explained". Also, negative feedback spreads faster than positive feedback and people who can't even grasp the beauty of Edge of Tomorrow's concept will just brush it off as "confusing and boring" and pass on the not-recommended feedback to their peers. It's a sad reality.

Now, the only thing stopping him from happifies is an odd, but believable to the only person who NEEDS to believe it, 3 hour long conversation? I am sure she will understand, and bam! World saved, a date with the girl, and no grueling war to keep slogging through! No, he isn't the recognized hero, but I can see a future he gets the girl, and even grabs the group of friends along the way with one CRAZY day long conversation. Then happy future for everyone! There is no cost in that scenario and it easily believed.

Apart from the great story, details and pacing this movie works so extremely well because of the huge character development of Cruise. We’re so used to see him as a cool, badass superspy, but here he starts out as a piece of shit, scared maggot (which honestly, we can relate to) and by the end if the movie he is, dare I say, the most heroic super-badass he’s ever depicted. An arc that wouldn’t be possible without the premise of the films mechanics. But he’s still human… and we all feel with him before the credit rolls. He’s got a story to tell Blunt.

7:15 Funny thing you mention that, because this movie is actually based on (or rather inspired by) a Manga and Light Novels series called All You Need Is Kill. Also Rita's sword is believable because the movie does lay the groundwork for making it believable, they do mention it's actually not a sword, it's a reinforced helicopter blade Rita picked on the battlefield from a helicopter wreckage in a desperate moment and because of the power armor and time power she managed to use it effectively, even if it's not really realistic it's still quite believable (a.k.a versmilitude). And I have to say besides Alita Battle Angel (which was trying to be faithful to the original manga) this movie does a great job adapting the original sorry and westernizing it creating it's own version of the story that is somewhat different from the original but keeps all the good elements from it, these two movies should be the blueprints of how anime/manga adaptions should be handled.

I do love this move. One of the best sci-fi movies in the last 20 years. My issue is with the final solution. The fact Kage and Rita figure out to go to the command center and use the spike tool on Kage to find the Omega completely nullifies the entire "take the beach" segment of the movie. It makes you realize that Kage's first thought should have been "How can I use this power to avoid the battle on the beach altogether" rather than "How can I use this power to WIN the battle on the beach". Of course, that segment of the movie does give him the skill and confidence he needs (and it's fun), but he could've gained that just working out with Rita everyday for 100 days or so.

The manga was a 2 tome closed story, and they changed the ending of the movie leaving it open, but it is not really easy to do something as good as this movie, without feeling repetitive and pointless. That was what was cool about All you need is Kill. It was really cool to know the setting, the protagonist, his hardships, and the dilema at the end.

The protagonist was a 20-ish boy with no idea, drafted because his country was going down in the war. Rita was a teen that stole the ID of someone from to be able to join the war, that isn't even her real name. And the ending is just heartbreaking, it's so unfair, yet very emotional.

Possibly my favourite execution of time loops, fully understands the comedic and the tragic side to them and it still manages to feel unique. Also lowkey underrated alien design, I love how bouncy and unpredictable they are. It fully adds to the amazement that with the great execution of the time loops, each one feels convincingly defeated. (Also with Video Game movies being much more popular, they really should just hire Christopher McQuarrie to write a screen play to a Souls game (my personal preference being Bloodborne) )

Another concept movie, BEING JOHN MALKOVICH had come out a few years before, and although the two are very similar, the former is much, much better. And I believe it is better as it has an emotional core that the other doesn’t have.

I am beyond happy you recognized this movie. This is a contender for my Top 20 favorites, and it really is a fantastic thrill ride in all the ways you just beautifully explained.

The Symbolism is also on point in this film. The first time he sees Rita she steps out of a "cave" that's marked with a dragon skeleton telling us the ancient power that she is. Namely instinct, intuition and knowledge. The rotoblade sword to boot but she is diametrically opposed to Cage with regards to competence. And yet she needs him also because he has the timetravel power. Its a really TAO story because Cruise needs to become aligned and that's why he loses his team when he becomes tao and returns to the source. Jung would have loved this film. You could see J squad as just aspects of Cage's character which he loses as he becomes what he must be

It's not my favorite movie of all time, but it is up there as one of the most underrated movies of all time. Extremely good movie that in some bizarre way just didn't make the impact it deserved. After seeing it I thought it would end up quickly becoming The Matrix for a new generation, or The Terminator
