@@MuyuP I know this is 3 years late, but yes. Hearing your full name from a parent most people immediately associate with being in trouble. Hearing your full name out loud also is not very common in day to day life, so it’s likely that the only association he made to his full name was when he was going to face punishment, which is a very big stressor for any child

I have DID, and I completely agree with everything that the lady said. I'm in the DID community and there is a lot of resentment over this movie, because it portrays us as dangerous psychopaths. But I think that for the most part I can relate to a lot of what is shown in the movie with the exception of hurting people.

I love the movie yet at the end of the day know that’s not how you or anyone with DID actually acts. There is no evil alter. There is no beast-like alter dead set on attacking me. It’s just fiction and fantasy that in no way portrays reality, but instead a made up scenario. Though I understand if you take offense to the portrayal.

Thank God i can see past him and understand he's not the basis of people with DID, otherwise I'd probably hate all of you. But with regards to the movie, I don't personally think it portrayed all of DID people as horrible psychopaths. Just this one guy who got hurt and "Split" to the extreme. Which made him a person who hurt others.

The issue of saying a person's full name is extremely unique to only the movie. Not because it's inaccurate, but because it's a staple of Kevin's abuse. You literally trigger him and cause panic because his mother would say his whole name. It was a bad question ask if saying their whole name causes this. One question that is better would be "Does triggering a person to their trauma cause a chaos among their identities?"
@jdk2535
@jdk2535 5 жыл бұрын
yeah, probably more accurate to say "Is it possible to trigger one alter into the light?" which is possible... triggers are specific to alters though, it's unlikely (if not impossible) it would cause chaos among all of the identities.

Someone added the example of "My neurotypical persona is Karen and she can type emails and take calls with confidence and ease" or something like that. I don't have a mental illness, but I found it very helpful anyway.

*this comment is a bit long so buckle up* I actually was recommended something similar to this to help cope with my previously crippling social anxiety which lead to an unhealthy hermit lifestyle. I would have panic attacks so bad I'd be in a mental fuzz with my vision closing in while trying to find a restroom, vomiting/dry heaving, having diarrhoea, and nearly losing consciousness soon after on the floor after reaching the restroom. All just from doing normal things like grocery shopping, getting a haircut, etc. Today my social anxiety is almost gone and I can do most things that neurotypical individuals do with little issue, I essentially was able to tap into dissociative episodes to allow myself to learn how to cope and live when key actions required to live triggered anxiety and panic attacks. However I do NOT recommend someone try to do this by themself, if you have mental health issues PLEASE get professional help for them before an issue becomes crippling/potentially life threatening like mine did. I started with simple self-esteem and confidence issues as a child, which was allowed to evolve into a crippling social anxiety from neglect/abuse as my peers and only sibling outcast as well as singled me out for "being a weirdo/freak/monster".(both my parents were working back then and didn't have time for what they assumed was "normal" kid problems) This abuse from peers/my sibling was because as a child I didn't know how to act or socialise because my brain just didn't know what social behaviours and body language meant.(thanks aspergers) Later in my teen years I saw multiple doctors and therapists before I found something that worked because up until it was crippling, the disorder I developed was fairly asymptomatic thus couldn't be treated properly. During this time they just threw medications,etc at me until something stuck, a last resort to try and narrow down my actual issue before it was too late for my neurotic teenage self. Sertraline and past experience/trauma counseling along with coping therapy was what stuck for me, this was a major breakthrough allowing me to begin healing and learning how to live healthily. Now years later I have a diploma and go out of the house regularly, I can walk around in public without fear I might need to run off and vomit/pass out in a restroom, and though I have lingering anxiety triggers I know how to handle them. I'm not at the point others my age are at, but am getting closer to there more and more each day. I honestly just hope to be moved out of my parent's place and have a nice, small home to call my own by the time I'm kicked from their insurance. 😅

@Luomuhillo

This is actually a thing I've read about. (not from a verified source however) I came across a term called poly-fragmented which was used with people who might have over a hundred alters or so. I would also suggest people to read about "false memory syndrome" if you are interested in DID. Basically in the US during the so called "satanaic panic" overzealous therapists unwillingly created false memories of childhood abuse and satanic rituals etc. in some patients by use of suggestion and in some cases hypnosis and medication. All because the therapists believed the patients showed sings of childhood abuse, and believed in a worldwide satanic conspiracy. Cult mind control called "programming" is also a very interesting topic.

As someone who has struggled with dissociation through my own life the best way I can describe the way it feels is it’s like you’re watching a movie of your own life play out. You have no control over it and despite knowing that the main character is you all of it feels like fiction. It got to the point with me that I didn’t even recognize myself in the mirror. Nothing felt real and my emotions felt like they were fake. I personally had to go into a hospitalization program for 2 weeks and a outpatient program for 7 weeks until I finally got to the point when I was mentally stable enough to go back to normal life.

I also did go through a small bit of DID and had an altar named wolf. He stemmed from the stress that I went through do to therapy. Wolf was very aggressive and introverted. When I was in that state I would do anything and everything to avoid having to talk about my trauma. It was my body’s way of trying to avoid the stress caused by my therapy.

16:17 so to answer your question about it being possible to summon an alter by using a full name, it is true(though a bit of a stretch). Everyone has triggers and just like everyone else alters have a set of triggers that can possibly bring them to the light. There can be certain songs, smells, sights and tastes that trigger an alter to come foreword. It’s a bit specific to say that saying a full name would be a trigger but it can be possible and it’s true that it could be chaotic. It’s not good to pull alters out like that and it can be very jarring for alters to do this. There’s a difference between a host and a “true self” as she is putting it. There’s a youtuber called the Piñata System who’s main host is not who was “born in the body”. There are a lot of good DID channels that I recommend checking out if anyone wants.

Hey! As someone in a DID system, this movie makes me super uncomfortable... it feels like whenever DID is brought to light it’s either the butt of a joke or an excuse to make someone a murderer. Realistically, this isn’t the case at all. People with trauma are much more likely to hurt themselves than others, especially those with DID. I would understand if it was portrayed as a purely possession movie, but to bring in a real diagnosis kind of does a disservice to everyone who actually lives with it... -Millie

20:08 The director's questions can already be answered. It's not debated if different alter have different biological issues such as one needing glasses to see properly or another having depression; that is fact, alters can have issues like that. Next question: Yes, different alter sets CAN be supernatural. Alters can be a dragon, fairy, vampire, ghost, a dog, a God, a snake, etc. etc., but only in the inner world (inner world = the manifest world within the head space where the altars that are not fronting[presently in the body] reside). Will that dragon alter to be an actual dragon when it fronts into the body? Of course not. They won't breath fire because they are now residing in the body of a human, but they are still a real dragon within head space; but they will not have supernatural abilities in the real world. How is this possible? Remember: to get DID, you had to have undergone severe and repeated childhood trauma. Meaning.. alters are formed and developed by a child's subconscious mind. If that child found dragons to be very cool, and if that child thought: "if only I was a dragon, I wouldn't have to deal with this trauma" = a dragon alter is able to form. This is because that child's subconscious mind thought that having that dragon alter could allow the child to survive the trauma. DID is formed to protect the child from the knowledge of the trauma, everything (including alters) are done to protect the child and allow it to survive. This movie may have correct aspects of DID but it represents DID horribly. DID isn't a horror troupe. It's a defense mechanism that is made to protect a child from horrendous traumatic events. That is why the DID community rejects this film. A person with DID is less likely to harm another person compared to a "normal" person. Why? They are more likely to become an abused victim than to become an abuser, because they have already dealt with it before. Movies like this harm the DID community, who is made up of already damaged people. Please spread awareness instead of misinformation. If anyone who has read this far wants to learn more about DID, check out DissociaDID! They are a youtuber who has DID and spreads information that is backed by science, she links all her evidence if you want to read those yourself. Thanks for reading! (if you did read this far)

Hi! Alter from a DID system (that's what all the personalities in one body are called) stopping into the comment section of the video because I looked & didn't see another system do so. This movie, while technically scientifically accurate on most fronts, is still considered highly offensive by the community. It frankly pisses me and most of my headmates (synonym to alters) off due to the way things are framed. It contributes to the stigma against systems and helps to support the narrative that we are dangerous and should not be trusted, which is frankly untrue. Most systems that I know of with "dangerous" or "violent" alters would never hurt anyone outside of their systems. These dangerous or violent alters are called persecutors and I have never known or seen a persecutor to harm anyone that is not within their system. Not to mention that you saying,"To be honest, all of what I was watching seemed farfetched... even DID itself." is a prime example of how trying to spark debate around a controversial topic such as DID's very existence can just cause further doubt of the condition. It is scientifically proven. It is real. I experience it every day. I live with it. This movie is one of the reasons that my system has to be terrified of telling even our closest friends about our condition- because of the stigma it fuels. It should not be commended for its partial scientific accuracy, it should be condemned for its disrespect to the community. Especially considering that this community is defined by the trauma its members have experienced. If almost any other mental illness were represented this way, people would have cancelled it immediately. And yet Split and Glass are considered good movies, from what I've seen... edit: there are other systems who have commented on the video but none went as in-depth as I have in their honest response/opinion of this movie. so I'll leave the comment up. also, ask all the questions you want! but replying with "DID isn't real" or anything like that won't get much of a response. I hate to break it to you, but there's scientific evidence to prove my condition exists. Educate yourself before you hit "reply."

hi ! as someone without did, i just wanna say ppl with did seem to be the only ones taking this movie negatively, in my experience the movie is not meant to be taken seriously, as its a supernatural thriller; the alters doing harmful things because they're being manipulated by the beast, is not supposed to be accurate or taken seriously, because the beast is solely supernatural, which means anything involving it is impossible/not likely, without it kevin and the alters would be "normal" if not for the beast, which is basically the point, of the movie and what the movie tries to highlight, that the beast is the true and only villain, but seen as a "hero" that kevin and his system are victims to themselves thats the interpretation that most of us non-did people have i feel like and i feel like its a little hypocritical because i've noticed that people with did, have had a much more positive reaction to moonknight, despite the only difference being that moonknight is violent in the name of "heroism"
@jdk2535
@jdk2535 Жыл бұрын
@@yume5441 regardless of the narrative around the relationship between the Beast and the rest of the system, the Beast is still in the system, and therefore still perpetuating both stigma and harmful stereotypes. "people without did don't see it that way" because most of y'all are uninformed and unempathetic. I haven't seen Moon Knight so I can't really comment, but the stereotype on display isn't just "violence," it's "evil person who commits crimes." From what I understand, Moon Knight is supposed to be a superhero? So that would mark the difference- could be wrong though, all I know is that it's a show or a comic book? Maybe both? For what it's worth, I personally haven't seen any portrayal of D.I.D in media that I can support wholeheartedly.
@yume5441
@yume5441 Жыл бұрын
@@jdk2535 moonknight's character is an anti-hero he activley murders literally everyday, but the victims are only (though not solely) "bad people" regardless, its still a person with did being manipulated by a supernatural being, to be overtly violent, in the cause of "herosim" (as the beast is a wolf in sheep's clothing hero) its the same premise, one is just less pretty, so it's been taken negatively, while the other is praised no, people who don't have did aren't receiving this movie positively because of those reasons, its just because we do not see the sitmga that those with did claim this movie pushes, because we understand that the supernatural aspects (which are the sole and only cause for any negative behavoir, again, without them, the behavour could not and does not exist), are fictional i can promise you, no sane person is looking at split and saying, "yeah, seems about right" lmao

If you're looking for some more media on the subject, the books Sybil and The minds of Billy Milligan are quite interesting. They're based on real people so they don't give such a fantastical portrayal. EDIT: Oh! And the United States of Tara. Which is a TV show and one of the few times someone with DID isn't portrayed as dangerous or deviant.

Oh god, that’s a terrible example of it. (In the kindest way possible) please don’t take any value from split to help someone with DID. Try dissociaDID, or the entropy system on KZbin. Frankly and Alice is also brilliant, though slightly inaccurate as it’s dated. People with this disorder aren’t savage monsters, the “alters” are created to help a child process extreme trauma. They’re usually someone that the child needs at the time, eg. an alter embodying the role of an older sister or protector

Calling his first name doesn't have bringing his true self as a goal but remember him this bad moment that made him dissociate, that's why it makes sense for it to bring chaos, it's like making him flashback the tim when the alters became needed, when he was weak and in danger. AND, about supernatural personality, the mind defying shaolin monk show us how amazing the human body is, and it's mostly a mental training, so it would make sense for an other personality to exploit the body to its full potential with mind power, for example shoving in huge amounts of adrenalin and plenty other magical chemicals to use its full potential. Of course tis would make the host die pretty quickly. I guess. Apart from the first point io mentionned it was a great video!

My favourite example of DID in fiction is a guy named Allelujah Haptism from the anime Gundam 00. Basically as a kid he was forced to kill his only friends so he would have enough food and oxygen to survive. he dissociated from the memory of when he gunned down his only friends to survive because the guilt was too much to bare. By the time he's an adult this alter of his has made its mission in life to "help" the primary personality by performing acts that he knows are beneficial to him but he wouldn't commit himself for morality reasons, reasoning that his purpose is to make the primary live guilt free. It's a really interesting dynamic as one hates violence and tries to avoid it at all costs while the other kicks in if it sees an opportunity that requires it to succeed. It's interesting because though the more viscous personality seems heartless and even sadistic at times it's all done out of love for his more sensitive alternate who he wants to keep guilt free.
