This is a redo of my previous upload. I have modified it with narration and did away with the background music. Some people were disappointed they were not seeing the sets in the studio, unfortunately, nothing of those sets exist today. Since Desilu sold the studios, there have been many other productions done there. The old studio has changed hands several times too. The good news is, the old soundstages are still there, some have been renumbered, but the lot still looks much the same as it did during the Desilu years. This is where the interior shots were filmed for The Andy Griffith Show as well as Gomer Pyle USMC, and other well know productions. In addition to the interior sets, there was also a duplication of the exteriors for the Court House and Floyd's Barber Shop. These were used a good bit, but all of the outdoor filming of the streets of Mayberry were shot at the Old 40 Acres Backlot in Culver City. Those sets were destroyed in 1976 after the studios sold the property for the development of an industrial lot. Today there some sound stages located on the property but they are owned by Century Studios. If you would like to see some of the modern views on video, I have some posted on my channel. You can also go to Kipp Teague's website of the Old 40 Acres (Retroweb) for some very interesting archives featuring the old town of Mayberry! I also have some footage from Franklin Canyon Park near Beverly HIlls...this was the site used as Myers Lake in The Andy Griffith Show.
I have another version of this in HD format but without narration, you can see it at:

I still watch the Andy Griffith Show every day. This show is precious ......I love how GOD is honored and families looked out for each other. My favorite girlfriend for Andy was Peggy. They should have signed her ......she added beauty and great personality .........she was perfect for Andy. And she sang like an angel.

Thank you so much for doing this. I look back with fond memories to the 60's when I was a young boy, and how much I enjoyed watching the Andy Griffith show. I wish they would produce good wholesome shows today like they did then. Thank you.

I know this is an Andy story but I might add a bit. Folks in Jamestown NY to this day refer to their back yards as “the back 40”. So many folks still have connections with Lucy’s family and the folks families who remained close. The house in Celoron she grew up in now sports a wonderful crooked barbecue as an exact copy tribute to the one she and Ethel built in one episode. Pretty amazing to think a cute little dancer from a small western New York town would touch so many lives. She and desi took us to magical places from the peaceful life in Mayberry to the uncertainty of our intergalactic future

The opening sequence of The Andy Griffith Show was filmed at the Franklin Canyon Reservoir. It is located just north of Beverly Hills. Franklin Canyon Reservoir also doubled as Myers Lake in some of the episodes...The area is a park and it is virtually unchanged since the show was filmed there. You can go and walk the same trail that Opie and Andy walked in the opening sequence of the show.

B2_ Froze HELLO!!! So... I live in Eastern NC and I just thought that perhaps you might appreciate this little tidbit: So, if you were to travel to Mount Airy, NC you would see some very interesting things. There is a hamburger joint called Goobers there, a Mayberry hotel, and even the town's Police cars still run the streets of this quaint town. The Policeman actually works at the hotel, and drives his old Andy Griffith Police car to work. Those cars are actually still operating as the town's official Police cars! It's such a fun step back in time. (Just as I have found living in the state of NC to be). It's truly like going back in time 60yrs. I moved here 30yrs ago and haven't regretted it one bit. A fabulous place to raise children & I've never had to even lock my doors!!! Grant it, every place has it's "bad side", but they've recently just named NC "No.#1 in the Nation"... for jobs, & many other things!!! It's just like Mayberry in most of our small towns, still today. But I digress... Still though, if you go to Mt. Airy's Main Street, you'll find it is a great little time capsule, with loverly little old tyme shops,... and it's all nestled in, right at the beginnings of the NC mountain range. Right at the point to which the mountains of NC just begin, & where they really start to show off their incredible beauty...esp in Spring & Fall!!! They're close to the Blue Ridge Pkwy & another fun town, ...Asheville, NC. I have visited Mt. Airy many times, enjoying myself tremendously, each & every time that I have gone. I hope you are able to visit that area at some point. It's a hoot, seeing those names on active store fronts, and of course, ...the cars!!! Also, Andy Griffith filmed his Matlock show here in Eastern NC's town of Wilmington, at Screen Gems Studio's. It is a great place to visit also and you can even be an extra in many of the shows/movies that they film there today.

B2_ Froze I heard that Andy would get so tickled with Don during a show he would just run off laughing. I still watch the shows especially Aunt Bees pickles. The last of that one shows she had made marmalade and Barney ask if they had been painting. Only saw it a couple of times. So funny good clean fun. Not like now.

+BoosterG I got the book from Amazon soon as it was made available, very interesting up close and personal. I enjoyed reading it, I have to admit there are some things in there that were a little disappointing, but one has to realize these guys were human and they were actors, it can be hard sometimes for a fan to realize sometimes that the characters they portray normally do not reflect the actor in personal life. This by far my most favorite book on Andy and Barney as it tells it all the good and the bad, gives the reader an honest look in the their lives and their involvement in show business

The 40 acre lot that was home to Mayberry (outside) was also used in several Star Trek episodes like "Miri" and "City on the Edge of Forever". In fact, in the case of the later episode, there is a scene where William Shatner is walking with Joan Collins down the street and they walk right past Floyd's Barber shop which is still marked "Floyd's Barber Shop". Cool video - thx.

+Kevin Doran Yep, the famous take off scene was filmed in the alley next to the theater, in one episode Clark Kent is driving up a dirt road on a mountain after a school bus, that is Baldwin Hills, in the scene you can see the 40 acres back lot in the background as well as what was left as Tara in Gone With The Wind. The road up on the mountain is still there but now it is paved.

@Realstuffadventures
@Realstuffadventures 7 жыл бұрын
Your friend is not alone. There are many who still believe that probably because of the publicity from Mt Airy, NC, Andy's home town. It is where the fans meet every year to celebrate the show, great event....and by the way, they did such a great job of making The Andy Griffith Show, it makes it believable that Mayberry is actually in North Carolina.

I would have loved to been there to sneak in to the lot back in those days! I'll bet it looked a lot smaller in person. You can tell watching the DVD's how the sets were worn pretty badly, I have seen a few photos of the back of the courthouse, awesome view, Last year I was attending a show by Karen Knotts, daughter of Don Knotts and she gave a short description of how the lot looked when she was a kid, noting that it was all mostly facades, etc.

It was quite a large era, since I never hada formal tour the set's kinda blended together.. We liked the western town street it was ⅞ original size and I was taking a photography class at high school. .. The only permanent building as I recall was the large church, they stored lots of props from past filmings there, once in a while we would see some storefront setup for some filmings ... The only shootings at that time ( early 70s ) was Gomer Pyle and Hogans Heroes...

The Tarzan Lagoon....it was also used in The Andy Griffith Show. Would have loved to had been able to see it all when it was in its prime, I just saw where Amazon has completey redone the Desilu Culver, all of the old soundstages gone now, but I think they may have saved the bungalows and especially the iconic administration building

+SandhillDigger How come you did not film the actual house at 830 Lillian Way? If Lillian Way is just a public street, not associated with or owned by RED Studios) as you said it wasn't in the Desilu era), you would have been within your rights to have filmed the house from the sidewalk or street. Also, do you happen to know which houses were used for the exterior shots of "Andy Taylor's" and "Helen Crump's" houses? Were they from houses on the "Forty Acres" backlot? Or was 830 Lillian used for those too?
@gymnastix
@gymnastix 8 жыл бұрын
+SandhillDigger I also wonder what property was used for exterior shots of the original "Steve Douglas" house (in "Bryant Park") in the first five seasons (on ABC) of "My Three Sons?" That series was also shot at Desilu, even though it was a Don Fedderson Production. In fact, the late Don Grady once told me "M3S" shot right next door to "The Lucy Show," and that William "Bub" Frawley would ask the boys (Don "Robbie" Grady himself, as well Stan "Chip" Livingston and Tim "Mike" Considine) to toss a Frisbee with which they had been playing in Vivian Vance's direction, just to bug her. It is almost legend at this point there was no love lost between Frawley and Vance, who portrayed what were perhaps television's most well-known neighbors, "Fred & Ethel Mertz," in "I Love Lucy." And Vance herself is also probably TV's most popular second banana, in a close competition with Art Carney ( "Ed Norton" in "The Honeymooners"), Don Knotts ("Barney Fife" in "The Andy Griffith Show"), Mary Tyler Moore ("Laura Petrie" in "The Dick Van Dyke Show"), and Jean Stapleton ("Edith Bunker" in"All in the Family"). Although, perhaps Moore and Stapleton don't really qualify as "second bananas," since each was really almost equal to her respective TV spouse, Van Dyke's "Rob Petrie" and Carroll O'Connor's "Archie Bunker." But I really think one has to give it to Vance, since she co-starred in two of Lucille Ball's series'. I realize Knotts made some cameos in Griffith's "Matlock" series, and that Carney portrayed his "Norton" character in both "The Honeymooners" and "The Jackie Gleason Show." But in terms of total screen time, Vance filmed many more episodes with Lucy than either of the other two actors did in their respective series'.

+gymnastix the homes across the street on Lillian away we're torn down long ago. Look at the address on Google Maps, Streetview, and you can see. And yes, Andy and Helens houses were filmed at 40 Acres. Also, the episode Goober Takes A Car Apart, appears to have been filmed on Lilian Way also. The scene where Gilly stops to pick up Goober.

+gymnastix The houses on Lillian Way were all torn down years ago to build a parking lot for the studio. Check out 1:43 on the video. This old sign left over from Ren-mar Studio is on the fence which houses the parking lot, which is where the houses were located before they were razed. The sign is also a witness that this was done at the time the studio belonged to Ren-mar. Andy's and Helen's house exteriors were on the "Forty Acres" back lot. All of that was razed in 1976 and became an industrial park.

Nice video. A trick to get into a studio is to call ahead and tell them you're shooting an indy film and want to rent props or wardrobe. Give them your name over the phone for the guard at the gate. You'll pull up to the gate, show your I.D, and you get buzzed in as easy as that. Go on your own tour without a guide. Not that I'd ever do something like that I'm just saying you could.. 😜

+704 BUGMAN That is correct ! This was the film location for the buildings at Camp Henderson. It was at the gate of the studio where they checked in with the MP. Also in the scene where Gomer is coming out of the warehouse with his gear with Sgt Carter is yelling at him, that is one of the elephant doors to Soundstage #8, you can see the number 8 on the wall. There is also another episode where Gomer is walking in front the brick building on the side walk. That brick building on the side walk is the Boys and Girls Club if I remember correctly from my visit there.

in 1975 as a kid we would jump the studio fence and walk around on the outside grounds. I Saw were they filmed TV shows, Batman, were the batmobile drove down, saw Gomer Pyle Quonset huts, Combat TV show filming area and saw Hogan hero's show area too It was neat I saw the original tree stump were Hogan's men would come out of from the prison camp. My last time jumping the fence into the studio back lot I decided to go pull out that tree stump as a souvenir but I was too late someone else took it before me, Bummer. I got the see the demo crew sadly, they bulldozed down that back lot flat. The lot was replace by condo homes on that site in Culver city California.. Very sad indeed. They should have saved the studio lot as a historical lot or should have taken the props and sold them to the public instead of smashing them all up.

Do you happen to know what those boxes were that were at the bottom of the windows in the courthouse? They look like flower pots/planters that people put under their windows, but, being indoors, I never could understand what these might be.
@Realstuffadventures
@Realstuffadventures 7 жыл бұрын
I have often wandered myself. I don't think they are there in the early episodes, it if my believe they were just added for cosmetic purpose, i.e. just dressing up the bottom of the window. It is important to know also that all of the walls were individual panels that are put together to make the set. The wall behind Andy's desk it probably not there most of the time, it is only there when the camera is shooting in that direction. Otherwise, the camera are set up where that wall is to film the interior shots of the courthouse. This was done on a sound stage at Desilu (Cahuenga Blvd.) in Hollywood. The courthouse exterior filmed at 40 acres had no interior, just a facade.

I know the Adventures of Superman '52-'53 season used 40 Acres Backlot for many of its exterior scenes. Yesterday on METV I was watching the episode titled The Deserted Village, and took note of the Mayberry Courthouse (eight years prior). But there was one scene where it appeared you could see what appeared to be railroad tracks directly behind a house that one of the characters of the show lived in. These tracks were on 40 acres (not some distant shot outside the backlot) and maybe less than 10 feet from the house. The only reason I mention it was that the tracks seem very out of place (by a residential supposedly close to the sea shore) and I was wondering if in fact that scene was filmed on 40 Acres, and if so, just where at. Growing up during all of the 1950s, I enjoy almost everything about the 40 Acres back lot and the shows and movies filmed there, and all the trivia that goes with it. It's sad to me to know it's all gone now.

This was a really cool video, thanks for sharing. I love The Andy Griffith Show too. Anyway, when you mentioned Who Framed Roger Rabbit, I just watched that movie about a month ago, pretty good movie and when you were showing Red Studios, I thought it looked awfully familiar. Now, I know. Wasn't that studio called ACME Studios for the movie? I think they even shot the inside parts of Who Framed Roger Rabbit in there, like when the detectives were investigating the crime scene and when Judge Doom captured Jessica and the detective, I forget his name already. The one that was protecting Roger. I laughed so hard seeing Christopher Lloyd as the bad guy, when i think of him, I think of Jim on Taxi, Doc in Back to the Future and Al in Angels In the Outfield, all good guys. Plus Red Studios would have been the place where they shot I Love Lucy and many other shows.

The only things that I know of that survived for sure are some items that Andy Griffith himself kept such as a set of the signs from the court house door {Sheriff and Justice of the Peace} his desk and some of the stuff that was on it such as the Eagle and the pen set, the small mallet, etc. He gave them all to a very close friend named Emmet Forrest and fortunately Emmette gave everything to the Andy Griffith Museum in Mt Airey, NC www.andygriffithmuseum.com/ . It is a wonderful place to visit and see a small collection of things there from the show! I am pretty sure the old sets such as the jail an all of the interior sets are long gone to the landfill or recycled.

@Realstuffadventures 10 жыл бұрын
It get kind of confusing to try to trace the studios sometimes. The exterior shots for TAGS was filmed at the 40 Acres backlot however the soundstages that were used were #1 & #2 at the Desilu Studios at Cahuenga. Franklin Canyon was also used a good deal for the woodsy scenes at"Lake Myers". At the time Desilu owned the properties they also had studios at Gower which is now Paramount and in Culver City.You would think that the interiors would have been shot at Culver City, but I guess the Cahuenga studios were better set up of tv shows at the time, the sets for TAGs were in place there for eight years. It is an interesting story altogether, you can see some pretty good information on the timelines on the studio websites for Sony, Paramount, etc.

On the floor plan of Red Studios, it looks like studio 5 is where you were talking about stage 9. Did they change the numbers on the studios? www.redstudio.com/images/lotmap/Studio%20Lot%20Map%202012.pdf

+Don Brown Yes they did renumber the stages. I believe back in the Desilu era, they had 30 something stages in their holdings, I am pretty sure that was how the original numbers were given at that time. I read once that since that location did not have a backlot, it was perfect for filming sitcomes where they could add live audiences, however, we know for a fact that Andy Griffith Show never used live audiences, they used a single camera to film the episodes, just like making a movie as it was done during that time.

+SandhillDigger It was still nice knowing the original locations that they were filmed in. I have enjoyed all of your videos.

Wow I always thought Andy Griffith show was filmed down the street where I lived in Culver City at Culver City Studios. It used to be RKO and then Desi Lu. There’s a mural of Lucy an Desi on one of the buildings there in Culver City. Maybe they filmed some scenes there. I know they filmed a Star Trek show there. Lucy owned some of those shows.

Desilu had three locations, Desilu Gower in Hollywood, Desilu Cahuenga in Hollywood, and Desilu Culver. The old 40 acres back lot in Culver City is where the exteriors were filmed. At Cahuenga, duplicate sets of court house etc. were built for interiors shots.

You showed the studio where "Gomer Pyle" was filmed but it seems like a lot of that show was filmed outside around marine huts. Where was that location? It was obviously outdoors.

The exteriors were filmed at 40 acres backlot which was Desilu at the time. Before that it was Pathe, RKO, etc. I do remember one episode were Gomer is walking down the sidewalk outside of the studio where the Boys Club is located
