Great advice. I shoot with the Canon XF300 and love it. It is one tough Camcorder, it has NEVER failed me even under extremely cold, hot, dusty, bumpy trips. You are so right about DSLR's. I have traveled all over Africa and South America videoing wildlife with a group of fellow travelers that use DSLR's. They are always lugging and changing lens while I am happily shooting away. Some of then even carry two camera bodies, one with a wide angle lens and the other with a telephoto lens. My Canon XF300 goes from 26mm - 529mm (I can kick it up to 790mm if needed), plus, when I put on my Sennheiser MKE600 shotgun mic and windscreen the audio blows them out of the water. And, as you stated, I can pack it all into one manageable backpack ( I will turn 70 in March so yes, weight is a factor). Love your videos. Always learning. Bob

Great video. I'm a camcorder type of guy too. My main cam is the Panasonic HC-X1 and as a backup I got the HC-VX870 4K. I also use a Gopro 7 Black and a DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone. That's all I need to create my videos. Have an amazing weekend, Andreas from Off Grid Sweden 🇸🇪

This was lovely. Thank you so much for talking to camera like you were talking to a person. I really felt that and it was lovely to hear your long term goals and honest review of what's required. It can get really overwhelming when it comes to equipment and new tech. I'd never considered camcorders before as I had always thought they were outdated or for broadcast but I'm now going to seriously consider one. I'm not the strongest person so a lot of my choices are about weight and less faff whilst keeping the cost down. Love from Scotland.

Ok, so, what I got from this video is: Camcorders are better for movement and filming action while DSLR are ok if you're not moving, like interviews or very slow action... (?) I'm not a photographer or a filmmaker, (srly, I don't even know how to use the camera in my phone) but I found this video incredibly informative and soothing XD

Thanks so much for making this video, it’s helped me a lot! I’ve been using a Canon G40 for a few years, will be upgrading to the XF400 soon. Would love to have the 705 but it’s $7000 price tag is out of my range at the moment. The key for me was when you spoke about depth of field. The camcorder keeps the environment in focus & it’s always ready to shoot. You sure picked a fast moving little guy to video... I’m thinking turtles, lol!!

Thank you for sharing your experience and taking the time to prepare this material and sharing it with us!. Great tips.. I´m starting the transition from photography to film making and I really have this dream... to create nature documentaries, since I was a child (Thank you Jacques Cousteau!).... even if I´m the only one who sees them. Looking for information to start I found your chanel. The most important thing that you give me in this video was not about gear or something material, was about inspiration to chase what you really want in life, and I appreciate that kind of motivation a lot.... it gives you an important boost that seems to always hit you at the right moment. Thank you so much for that!!. Regards from Chile my friend.

This video is extremely invaluable to me. I have the same dreams as you. I have a passion for wildlife, but I started off using my musical skills with the intention to score for wildlife documentary. Only about 2 years ago, did I start getting into wildlife photography. It evolved into a desire to want to film. My frustrations with the DSLR led me to this video and there you are discussing exactly everything I am experiencing. This field really is about trial and error and figuring out what you want to accomplish and what tools are the best at executing it. It costs money and time to really learn this. I will take your wisdom and begin looking to camcorders.

Have you looked into bridge cameras, like the Nikon P1000 or P950? I really want a camcorder, but I don't know if I can pass up the zoom on these bad boys. Especially for little birds that are extremely difficult to approach. I don't know how you manage such great stuff with a 15x zoom only!
@DerekHilton3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kale It's about knowing and understanding your subject which will help you to get up close and personal I talk a lot about this on my channel . Nikon P1000 for wildlife not my first or second or third choice for professional footage . If you are serious and want professional footage go for camcorder . If mirrorless cameras are you thing go for the Sony a7III or the Canon R5 . Thank you very much for your comments much appreciated . Cheers Derek

Excellent video! Would you have any recommendations for someone who’s an absolute beginner to filmmaking? I know my way around my G85 but it’s like you mentioned. It’s extremely difficult to focus on tiny birds when they’re flitting through the branches. I’ve tried taking a look at the camcorders that are currently available but it’s just all too confusing.
@DerekHilton3 жыл бұрын
Hi Thralling Yes it is confusing you have to go on what you won't from a camera the pries, pro work or blogging etcetera . Find a camcorder that fits your needs then look at reviews to make sour it will work for you the XF400 works for my at this time . It isn't perfect but it has the things i need for now Good HDR INFRARED Face detection.. So there is a lot to consider here so it is hard for me to help you out much more but i will say that I had the Panasonic UX180 for 12 months then I got rid of it HDR AND LOTS OF OTHER THINGS where SHIT . I would not recommend it. I wish you good luck with you hunting Thank you very much for your comments much appreciated Cheers Derek

Have you had a chance to look at the new Panasonic AG CX-350? It appears that it could stack up against the 705 rather well, with a much lower price.
@DerekHilton5 жыл бұрын
Hi Bernie YES not much gets past me when it come to cameras. It is identical to the UX180 in looks and functionality But the sensor is 15 megapixels the XU180 is 8 megapixels. So it will have more detailed in the image . The UX180 has a slow sensor speed so slow motion is horrible. I question whether it to ma have a slow sensor speed to . It has 10 bit 422 which is always a good thing to have . The ux180 has a magenta color shift which i didn't like at all. Dusit have that to. The Panasonic AG CX-350 has a lot going for it BUT! No Face Detected ! . So I am not so impressed with it. So There you go that's my thoughts on the Panasonic AG CX-350 which is more made for the broadcasting industry than a one man band. Cheers Derek

Thank you so much for this video! I've been trying with the DSLR that I had but I find it doesn't work very well.. I have about 80 tarantulas and I haven't been enjoying filming them with it, I find that it's very difficult to get the right depth and when I have a few mm of the specimen in focus the rest is a blurry mess and you miss out on SO much of the gorgeous critter! I may take the plunge and try a camcorder like you. I share your same passion to want to film nature and make documentaries regardless of the attention they may get. But instead, here in Canada haha, there is a lot of cool stuff here people just don't know about! So again, thank you :) You have a new subscriber and I will definitely check out your other videos!

Hi Derek. Thank you for making this video! I’ve been struggling to figure out what I want to focus on creating for a long time. You have helped me remember that I too have wanted to record nature! I wanted to make films since I was a kid but I put that dream on the shelf and forgot about it. I want to record the sky (clouds, sunsets, rainstorms) during the day and at night and post my videos on my youtube channel. I’m also thinking it would be fun to have a sky cam mounted on my ceiling and pointed directly at the sky over my house. Can you recommend a camera for this for $1,000 or less?

Hi TZ OK I am a tech nerd with high end cameras not with the low end much. But maybe the Canon 80D used with a lens mite be a good buy . It has good time lapse video 1080p. Or the canon 90d used timelape 4K video . Really you need to look at as many reviews as you can to find the camera that will suit you. KEH offers the variety of used cameras in the US. sorry that I can not help you much more than that Thank you very much for you comments appreciated and good like with your with your Cheers Derek

I use a Sennheiser ME66 XLR shotgun microphone. You can buy an adapter that converts the XLR to 3.5 mm audio port. The microphone gets power from a 1.5 volt AA battery that you insert into the end of the mic. This might allow you to use a shotgun microphone on your SLR camera.
