I totally agree. I’ve shown this movie to my brother, my dad, and multiple friends over the years, and I usually spend more time watching their reactions than the actual movie itself.

The director, SInger convinced all the cast member that they were Soze. They didn't find out who was really Soze until Singer screened to final cut for them. Gabriel Byrne, who played Keaton, was so pissed that he wasn't Soze that he stormed out of the screening room and then argued with Singer in the parking lot for about half an hour about why he should be Soze.

I guess Gabriel Byrne thought he was the big star in it with so many of the others being new to big films. Funny thing is this was the last movie I remember seeing with him as the "star." Just about everybody else's career jumped by leaps and bounds since this came out. Even Baldwin's for a while.

Verbal is not Soze. There are countless reasons why I thought Kobayashi is Soze but one true giveaway is the moment in the pool room when he first appears to the 5 suspects. Just as Keaton utters the words "someone with power..." they cut to a shot of Kobayashi calmly standing in the shadows having entered unnoticed by these career criminals. And then it happens again during the finale as we see and hear the montage of clues as Kint is walking down the street. When the phrase "someone with power" is played again the Jaguar with Kobayashi appears behind him. So subtle and sly. Bonus, we never know his real name as Kobayashi is the name Kint gave him from the coffee mug. And he was present at every key moment of manipulation of the suspects.

Now just imagine this twist 25 years ago when twist endings weren’t common or expected. Nowadays, we expect twists at every turn and are looking for them. But back then, NO ONE saw this coming. A masterpiece

I feel like the risk of having the narrator straight up making shit up is that if you predict the twist, or are rewatching, it can just feel like pointless bullshit. But the storytelling here is so captivating that it's always a joy to watch.

The reveal of the bottom of the coffee mug is such an amazing shot, it really seals the entire movie. It's amazing how a zoom in on a coffee mug can radically alter everything you thought you knew in the movie.

I love how the sergeant says the guy is protected from on high by prince of darkness, then later we get the “greatest trick the devil ever pulled”, line. Such brilliant writing.

There are those who claim that this movie didn't surprise them b/c they suspected Verbal to be Keyser the whole time. Yet you deduced the same thing and was still surprised due to the fact that the ending had more than just one revelation. I don't think anyone ever expected the details of the story to be based on the bulletin board.

It would fly just fine because Kobayashi is never even described as Japanese, and it isn't even made clear if it's his real name or just an alias. He is literally a character patched together by Verbal out of random bits of information. An unambiguously Japanese name, a pseudo Indian accent, and Pete Postlethwaite is literally neither. You never hear him speak at the end, so there's no indication that the character you see there is actually the same one, or just happens to be a real person who works for/with Verbal that he attached these made up traits to. Anti-SJW sentiment manages to invent 100x more reasons to be annoyed by imagined outrage than SJWs ever do.

I sometimes think it must be weird for younger people with modern photo and film technology, they're gonna have this super sharp footage of their parents and grandparents as young people and kids. Only photos I've got are black and white, or the colours washed out and quite fuzzy. I wonder if they'll feel a greater connection with them seeing them so clearly.

@@JamesVSCinema I love Benicio's Finster character, he came up with it himself , I mean the way he speaks and moves, and he's absolutely a scene stealer every single one he's in, just hilarious. The cast was dumbfounded first time they saw it and couldn't understand a word he said. The director asked him if he seriously intended to play him like that the whole movie and del Toro said he would and that was that, an iconic character born. The lineup scene in the movie is so great and famous and it took them a day to shoot it, as every take someone would start cracking up saying the line and originally that wasn't in the script. In the end they gave up and just took this take and it works beautifully of course.

It was actually Del Toro's idea to have his character's speech be mumbled. He said that after reading the script, and realizing his character doesn't actually say anything of note, he asked the director if he could speak in a slightly inaudible way through it, seeing as how all the character's all around him end up adding or reiterating what he just said anyways. It was pretty incredible for an actor to just not want that much attention put on their character, ironically it just made us all sit up even more when he would speak. Brad Pitt was so taken by his performance, hopefully I'm remembering the trivia bit correctly, he called up Del Toro and asked him for permission to do the same with one of his own character's, and that's what we got from Brad in the movie Snatch.

This Movie is probably a standing template for modeling a story around "subverting expectations". Now, I'm no successful author or screenwriter by any means, but I recognize good stories and clever plot devices when I see them.

True story. They were filming this as prep for "the real shoot" and they were all giddy and cutting up (but staying in character). Singer was wise enough to see that it was better than if they played the lineup scene "straight" and "hard-ass", so he kept it for the final cut. One of the best "happy accidents" in film history.

5:50 In detective Kujan’s speech to Verbal about putting guys in a cell and whoever is laying down is guilty, notice who was laying down the whole time, and that he is later revealed to have actually stolen the truck. I love the little attentions to detail this movie has. Also the cigarette scene was real. Alex Baldwin really got hit in the eye but signed the director to keep going

Speaking of cigarettes, another thing that makes Verbal stand out is that he holds his cigarettes European style in a few scenes (9:48 for example.) It's exceptionally rare for an American smoker to hold one like that (I've never personally come across any who do.)

Part of his insight, I think, comes from the film being twenty-five years old. Even seeing it now, a lot of this has become meme worthy and has shown up in other things by this point. I've never seen the Crying Game, but somewhere along the way I've picked up how it basically ends. That being said, I still enjoyed his analysis of the movie.

Saw it in on release, knew 5 mins into the movie it was Spacey, unfortunately it was because a mate of mine, when he heard i was going to see it, said "it's the guy with the limp".. that was all.. no context. I would argue, it's a cliche now in two aspects. 1. It's Kevin Spacey. Come on. He's a known serious actor. Back then, he wasn't. 2. It's more "obvious" now for a variety of reasons. Mostly because nowadays, you expect the least expected person to be "that" person. That .. wasn't the case 25 years ago. Also, like he said, he knows filmmaking. He noticed certain things in angles and shots that were meant for foreshadowing and he saw through that foreshadowing when you're not really "supposed" to see through the foreshadowing until you see the end or rewatch the movie.

Got to back it up saying, your gut is correct. Honestly I was annoyed you caught one so quick. But that's your study and craft. From an outside perspective that is fantastic, you feel the vibe but aren't sertain. I never knew how a film could effect others by pushing and pulling. You my man are a gift at doing so. I remember watching this when it came out. We sat down for the 9 PM screening, having no idea what we're were going to see. Ten minutes in I was gripping the armrets. When it ended, I SERIOUSLY considered getting a ticket for the 11 PM screening to watch it again right away.

Best last line of the movie. "And like that... he's gone." Gives me chills every time. And it's so fun to rewatch because then you see just how good he is at fooling everyone and making up that story. SO good.

What really amazes me about this movie is the fact that when the realization hits you who Keyser is,you feel everything Agent Cullian feels. The urgency,the realization,etc. Verbal not only make him feel like he got played,but you the viewer feel like you got played too. And it's only after you watch it the second time do you see the signs and clues you previously overlooked that Verbal was Keyser.

I love how Kaiser is written. Such is his confidence that he amuses himself toying with cops trying to shake him down, by seeding his story throughout with tell-tale elements stolen from the very room they are interrogating him in. Ultimately adding to his already impressive mythology.

It's borderline impossible to overstate how influential this movie has been. I mean, twist endings had been around since forever, of course; but this movie slammed the trend into high gear. It still hasn't been surpassed by anything that came after, when it comes to the impact of the twist, imo. I'm a massive cinephile and I surround myself with people at roughly my own level of nerdishness, but nobody - and I mean *_NOBODY_* - saw this ending coming, back then.

It's impossible to make a surprise reveal like this anymore. It's been 25 years since this movie changed how stories would unfold. You can't be surprised like we were in 1996 when we watched this movie fresh, with all the old movie tropes already established. Great reaction. Where can I see some of your films? Glad you enjoyed it! The whole film is a magic trick. Watching it again there's little bits of foreshadowing, like the shot you liked pulling up from the coffee cup, which turns out to be so important to the ending. I saw it in the cinema and it's one of my all-time favourites, I'm delighted to see it holds up with someone who knows what he's talking about.

The camera angles and movements you kept mentioning opened up so much to me. Like the shot out of the coffee mug that ended with a downward angle towards Verbal could've been hinting at him being able to see the bottom of the mug and read Kobayashi. And the scene with Verbal just looking around the room, its just so well-made. I think you got it backwards. The extended ruins the ending by spelling it out and hitting you over the head with it to the point of redundancy. Also messes with the pacing. Definitely watch theatrical. It's plenty good and spiring to the imagination.

@@tfpp1 Yeah, avoid the "extended". Funny how often that's the case: the filmmaker or the studio ruin a perfectly good movie by trying to give the audience more. I recently watched a reactor view the extended version of one of my favorites, and spend the entire video complaining about how long and slow it was. Most of those complaints were during scenes they added later.

It's a good movie, just hate the ending (in any of the versions). It is, since James is a film maker, very much worth while to see the documentary on how they made it, pretty epic undertaking (remember, no cgi involved).

I got to watch this one on the theater when it came out, and I had no clue what it was about - it was a day where I just wanted to go to the theater without knowing what was one and picked a film at random. It was mind-blowing. What I like the most about the twist is that, when you think about it, most of the movie you just watched may have been a lie. Some of the things are real because the cops would know about it (the heists, for instance) but all the rest might have been just a complete fabrication, and we have no way to know what really happened. :)

I've Been binge-watching Usual Suspects' reactions and this is my favorite one so far. You really when through all of the emotions. When I saw this movie years ago, I remember thinking at the end that I went through all of the emotions the film intended to convey. It looks like you had the same experience. My man. I love your reactions but I really wish you hadn't tried to guess the whole way through and instead just let it unfold the way the writer and director were telling it. Sometimes if you guess correctly early on, you can blunt the reveal and rob yourself of a delight you can never get back.

This is one of my favorite films and I was happy to see you react to it. I'd argue it is one of the best crime films of the past 30 years and has great acting/writing/score. I will NEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER forget my first time seeing this movie back in '96! My older brother made me watch it, and I was 1000% certain that Keaton was Keyser Soze. I even called my brother stupid for thinking that I wouldn't figure it out while he was laughing his ass off before Verbal walked out of the precinct! My brother never let on that there was more to come, he just sat there laughing at me. When I finally realized I was wrong though? He fucking lost it dying laughing in my face 🤣! Hands down one of the greatest twist endings ever written. Right up there with The Orphanage and The Others!

There's a lot of things you see in this movie if you watch it multiple times. I've seen it probably 20 times. One of the coolest things, which I think you'll appreciate, is at the very beginning before he kills Keaton... the camera very specifically shows his gold watch, his gold lighter and obviously him smoking. Right before the reveal, when he's leaving the precinct, he is getting his stuff. The man hands him the things back saying "one watch, gold. One cigarette lighter, gold. One pack of cigarettes". Obviously it's impossible to even notice that the first time around, but pretty cool on a rewatch.
