Saw it 4 times in theatres including being able to take my Dad to it right before he died. Must have rented it on VHS to show friends about 18 times when it came out. As a musician and editor myself, what John Ottman did composing the music and editing the film, is technically and artistically incredible.

Tiny clues at the beginning that are easy to miss. The first shot we see of "Keyser" at the dock is of his feet, walking normally. Then the first shot we see of Verbal is also of his feet, limping. Almost as if to subliminally say, "See, Verbal CAN'T be Keyser!"...because he is, of course

Nice one! There is a scene in Eddie Murphy's Dr. Dolittle where he's running through a dog kennel (and of course the Dr. can hear all animals talking) so we hear so many voices yelling out to him and somewhere in that mix a dog shouts "I'm Keyzer Soze". I immediately spit my drink and was coughing/laughing so hard. I had to rewind to confirm. Well played, sound mix team ;)

Another puzzle-box just like The Sting! Watch it again. You'll see a whole different movie. There are so many subtle hints and clues that will leap out at you now, even in the camera work - check out the way it focuses more and more on Kaiser's left hand as he walks away from the massacre in flames, the hand that Verbal has locked up in supposed palsy. His anger when Cuyon asks about Kaiser Soze - his great story just got derailed and now he has to think on the fly. (That's also why you see him rubbing his temple in closeup. He's editing as he goes, trying to make the shaky edifice stand up straight enough to get him the hell out of the police station.) And there's all the moments when, now that you know what's happening, you can see Kaiser trying not to laugh in Cuyon's face. The whole thing is complex and subtle and hilarious. One of my Top Five films, for sure.
@rowdycmoore
@rowdycmoore 2 жыл бұрын
But that's the even greater thing - the likelihood that "Verbal" knew Kujan would eventually hear the name Keyser Sose and his whole "has to now think on the fly" was all planned and part of the con from the beginning.

The one hint you get earlier in the movie about what is going on is when Agent Kujan first comes into the office where they are keeping Verbal is that Verbal is just sitting there, staring intently at the bulletin board. First one spot, then another, then another. That's the only hint at all.

The key line that wasn't included in this reaction came at the end of the line-up scene. "Besides, it was fun. I got to make like I was notorious." Many people end the movie thinking that he was notorious, but he admitted early on that he was making that up. Yes, he picked up details from the board, which an interrogation room would lack. But he also made his character appear more amazing than he really was.

"The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist." Very few see it coming and, out of those reactors, a couple are shocked they were right. Fun Fact: In an interview, Kevin Spacey revealed that Bryan Singer managed to convince every one of the major actors that they were Keyser Soze. When first screened for the company of actors, Gabriel Byrne was so stunned when he found that he wasn't Keyser Soze that he stormed off into the parking lot and argued with Singer for a half hour.

A movie I'd never seen, though I'd been told the twist by friends right after it came out on video, so it was one I never wanted to see since it had been spoiled. Glad to see you get to enjoy it so much! But my favorite film with Kevin Spacey in it is still The Negotiator where and Samuel Jackson played so well off of each other. Awesome movie!

I didn't realize it until I saw it a second time,but one of the biggest clues was when Kobayashi points out that it was Verbal who shot and killed the jeweler. Kobayashi wasn't there,so how could he have known it was Kent?

What!?! Chris is watching The Usual Suspects!?! This is going to be good, he said gleefully. Peter Green, who played Redfoot, stayed at the hotel I work at during the first year of the pandemic. Plague rat. He refused to wear a mask, refused to social distance. I don't know what movie they knew him from, but our housekeepers were excited he was there and were getting pictures taken with him (which ordinarily would get them fired.)

Beautiful movie, but only one of the wonderful performances by Kevin Spacey. Have a look at K-PAX where he plays a man in a mental hospital who claims to be an alien - confusing, funny, heart-rending, uplifting. I'd love to see you do a reaction to it.

The screenwriter of this movie, Christopher McQuarrie, made his directorial debut with The Way of the Gun, which I think is highly underrated and worth watching. The only KZbinrs I've seen react to it are gun channels breaking down the shootout scene.

@@CasualNerdReactions Absolutely! It's only when watching it back that you realize he's laughing because the cop is going on about "I think Keaton's behind everything, and I don't think he's dead! I think he was using you!" and Keyser's just sitting there like, "Wow, this dude is realllly confident for someone so clueless."

So many people think the entire story is made up, but it's not all made up, clearly some things were changed, like Redfoot, but other things like his lawyer and the back story of Soze were likely still real.

Expanding on the YT poll for those who are not in a financial position to join Patreon would be to hold a poll on the Tube and take the top 5 from that poll to the Patreon poll for a final decision. Everyone gets to participate, but the Paying Patreons get the final decision. Like a pre-selection vote in an election. I am also on a fixed income [retired] and money just doesn't go as far as we would like. I do love your exuberance and enthusiasm for film and film work and you are a top reactor in my book. Even if we don't get a public vote, still love your hard work.

One of my top 5 Neo Noirs (post 60 film noirs) This movie and *L.A. Confidential* both mid 90s, *The Long Goodbye* '73, *Chinatown* (my Fav) 1975 with Jack Nicholson and the Cohen Brothers first ever film, *Blood Simple* '84 is IMHO, their best film besides No Country for Old Men (some say its also Neo Noir). Then there is a little know gem by Brian DePalma staring John Travolta from the early 80s called *Blow Out* I don't know why its so under appreciated. These are all powerful movies, not as good as the classic Noirs but damned close. Top 5 Classic Noirs in no particular order, Double Indemnity, The Killing (Stanly Kubrick's first movie I think), Asphalt Jungle, The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep (both Bogey movies). Good job !! Bravo, this was priceless me knowing you were going to be amazed by the ending twist. It had a Vertigo kind if sudden twist that shocks the mind.

The moment you kind of know if you're REALLLLY paying attention that Verbal is Soze is when he's actually telling the back story. If you look at the emotion in his eyes, you can tell he is recounting a personal experience, not telling the story of someone else he's never heard of until recently. The intensity of his expression gives it away. Hard to catch that on first watch, but if you watch it again that's where they let you know who he really was.
@richieclean
@richieclean 2 жыл бұрын
I don't agree with that at all. If Verbal is Keyser Soze then he created the mythos around him, and I have always thought that the extreme nature of that back story is there to make the "character" of Soze more frightening. It may be true, it may be partly true or inspired by the truth, but Verbal is obviously a storyteller prone to embellishing the facts so it stands to reason that he would make up the most extreme back story for his Keyser Soze persona. He clearly knows the value of a convincing lie. The evidence for this? The scene is shot completely differently from the rest of the film, and the Keyser we see is completely different in build and appearance for Verbal.

The character that Peter Postlethwaite plays Kobayashi. The name comes from a classic Star Trek (the original series) episode in which you learn about the Kobayashi Maru. It's a military tactic that Kirk uses to win a war game.
@Henrik_Holst
@Henrik_Holst Жыл бұрын
not a tactic, it's a war game scenario designed to be a no win one but Kirk being Kirk refuses to play ball because he doesn't believe in no win scenarios so he cheats by altering the parameters slightly so it can be winnable.

What a great reaction, but I felt your struggle with what the narrative was feeding you at the end and your doubt. You did way better than me, I bought this hook line and sinker until the reveal. Such a great twist and a great cast and, shall we say, selective narrative. Another interesting twisty turns movie is "Signs" by M. Night Shyamalan, if you haven't already seen it, is one of his more underrated films (of "The Sixth Sense" fame).

Not necessarily ...Soze can buy a lot of "influence", and those who aren't for sale, can have fatal "accidents"; plus, evidence can be "lost", and if everything else fails, there's also plastic surgery.....
