He made his choice. Lots of people get treated like shit by their bosses but they don't revert to crime. He chose the easy way instead of being the working man. Eventually he could have found a better job and be treated with respect. He had a woman who adored him and he threw it away.

The big shootout in this film is maybe the greatest of all time. The coordination had to be nuts. And Mann had everyone using full load blanks, so the guns were realistically loud. He said it sounded like hell on earth. When they were cutting the movie, he previewed the mix, and they'd done what they always do in Hollywood...replaced all the location sound with sounds effects. Mann was baffled and furious. He insisted they use the actual location sound, and mix the gunshots LOUD. Don't quiet them down to the same level as a shout, like they do in other movies. Gunshots are LOUD, mix them LOUD. Don't damage the viewers' hearing, obviously, but let them feel the echos of those shots reverberating off the buildings. And that's what really makes that scene feel like an urban war zone.

You should definitely check out A Bronx Tale, directed by De Niro. Instead of an armed robber, psycho, or gangster, he plays a bus driver who doesn't want his son hanging around the gangsters in the neighborhood. Based on a one man show written and performed by Chazz Palminteri (who plays mob boss Sonny in the movie), based on his own childhood. Underrated. I wish De Niro directed more films. I'm a fan of his two films.

"I never knew people shot shotguns for distance." There are different types of ammunition, and variations of barrel design, that affect the spread and distance of an effect. Using slug shells means that you are firing a heavy bullet, a bit like a short rifle or carbine. Using shot shells means firing a number of smaller projectiles, which will fan out after leaving the barrel into a short-distance cone-shape. Using a 'high choke' type barrel will make the cone much wider, more damaging close to, but very short range.

@@J_EOMReacts Yeh, and there are a lot of different kinds of shot, loaded into shot shells. Buckshot is like a bunch of ball bearings or BBs. Bird shot is like a packet of flat lead bits, each about the size of maybe 50 grains of sand. and rock salt is literally made up of salt crystals, to cause minor surface tissue damage, to debilitate a target, non-lethally. I've also heard about shells loaded with sand bags, to to cause a non-penetrative impact...but I've never personally seen one, or seen their use.

@ 12:12 Do people really go out on dates and have coffee? My man, J. Yeah, brotha. From living on the west coast for 25 years, people/we do this all the time. It is like an "ice-breaker" date. "Mutual ground". Not expensive. Gives people time to talk with each other and decide to "maybe" meet up again. A date in the coffee shop itself is a lot shorter than if the date took place in a restaurant. Meaning the torment of being on a bad date with someone at the coffee shop isn't going to last as long as if you were paying for the food at a restaurant and waiting for them to finish their food. Coffee shop, drink your coffee and bounce ✌🏼. Always love your reactions, man! 🤙🏼

Loved your reaction as always J!! The movie was actually based on the true story of Neil McCauley, a calculating criminal and ex-Alcatraz inmate and was originally going to be a tv show but was rejected. As of July 2022, a sequel is apparently in the works. Al Pacino’s interesting take of method acting for his character was that he was always on high on cocaine. Marking the first time that Deniro and Pacino actually shared the screen, the time was very limited…….so I have to ask you, have you seen Righteous Kill? That is a badass Pacino/Deniro movie with more than 3 minutes of shared screen time!! Hope your elbows good and you got that fly ;)

@37:15, this is tight. Earlier when Jon Voight was telling Robert De Niro about Pacino’s character Hanna it was mentioned that he was in the Marines. It was also mentioned that he graduated their Sniper school. The writers just dropped that one little tidbit into the dialogue to set up this scene for later. With that skillset Hanna wasn’t gonna miss. He was even running a short barreled rifle to maneuver in tight spaces easily.

Haysbert's character haunts me a bit, and I think he's maybe the real reason for what this movie is about. It's about criminals. Why do they do what they do? Maybe it's because, when they're on parole, TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT of their paycheck goes back to their employer. And Haysbert is lucky to have a sugarmama who loves him and helps him stretch out his sub-poverty paycheck!

"I say what I mean, and I do what I say." Fun Fact: The coffee shop scene sold Robert De Niro on the idea of making the film. He, Al Pacino, and Michael Mann later admitted that they couldn't wait to shoot that one scene. Just Do It Live Fact: In an interview with Al Pacino on the DVD Special Edition, Pacino revealed that for the scene in the restaurant between Hanna and McCauley, Robert De Niro felt that the scene should not be rehearsed so that the unfamiliarity between the two characters would seem more genuine. Michael Mann agreed, and shot the scene with no practice rehearsals. Gun Enthusiast Fact: Rather than dubbing in the gunshots during the bank robbery shoot-out, Michael Mann had microphones carefully placed around the set so that the audio could be captured live. This added to the impact of the scene, because it sounded like no other gunfight shown on-screen.

If you’re interested, Michael Mann’s first theatrical movie is kind of a smaller version of this from just the criminal perspective. It’s called Thief starring James Caan (Sonny Corleone). It’s not as “slick” as Heat, but if you like watching the evolution of filmmakers and like this movie it’s a much watch.

This is one of my favorite movies. I love the score, DeNiro, Pacino, Studi, the fact that Michael Mann did it and so forth. The thing that always killed me about this movie is Chris Shiherlis. He jumped in because he needed the money because he was flat broke and gambled his money away and cratered out his family so they did the job. They might have gotten away and I know there wouldn't have been any more movie but he just couldn't let it go. That last scene with those two particular people just guts me every time.

"That's somebody's baby!"..... That's why we take the shot brother. 5000 hours on the range, 10 000 rounds on practice targets, months and months of training. Discipline, Focus, Conviction, Confidence. None of us want that scenario. None of us want that shot. But thats why we train, thats why we practice. Because if the moment comes where it's "up to me" to end this nightmare......you're Goddamn right Im going steady my aim, sharpen my focus, calm my breath, slow my heartbeat and wait for the Nano second of "perfect opportunity" to present itself and Im going to put a round right in the middle of that mother fuckers face... Like you said J.L. ...... "Oh HELL no! This mother fucker aint SHIT! That's somebody's baby!" ....The sooner its over the better. None of us WANT that shot, but if I HAD to......fuckin right Id take it..... Cuz thats somebody's baby....and this mother fucker aint shit... Love to the Fam y'all 💙 Semper Fidelis Über Alles

This is one of my favorite movies ever and I love your reason to it. If you want to see other dramas with morally ambiguous characters, I would highly recommend the Dollar Trilogy; "A Fistful of Dollars," "For a Few Dollars More," and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly." And because you watched the first Tremors movie (one of my favorite reactions of yours, by the way), I would also highly, highly recommend you watch Tremors 2: Aftershocks as well as Tremors 3: Back to Perfection. Tremors 2 stars Fred Ward and Tremors 3 has Michael Gross leading. They're all fun monster movies and I honestly think you would enjoy them. Also, part three has one of the best intros of the franchise.

One of those hours had to be for the gunfight after the bank robbery.. I recall being really excited to see this because Pacino & DeNiro were both in Godfather II, but they never appeared together in the film. It was thrilling to see them act together. I believe they'vve done another film since this one was made but that cafe scene with them both was wonderful!
