Your interpretation is so accurate! She was definitely being oppressed by the weird beauty standards set by society but also being oppressed by herself. She was trying so hard to meet the beauty standards in the past but now she finally breaks free from all the standards and her own demons!

The whole Ugly Beauty music video is based entirely on her real-life experience. The photos the prosecutor showed at the beginning was an actual paparazzi photo taken when Jolin was at the airport shortly before the release of her Ugly Beauty album, she was humorous enough to share it on her Facebook page and hashtag it #sluggyart 2:59 - The scene where she soaked food in water is a direct reference to a time when she went on a crazy diet to avoid oil in fear of gaining weight, she would only eat food that is water-boiled and would wipe them over before consuming, she fooled herself to a point where she believed her food tasted better than anyone else. She went down to 86 lbs at one point. The plate at 2:56 says “Necessary Hunger” 6:44 Reflection - No matter how skinny she was and how low the number on the scale got, she was never satisfied with her body. 4:55 - 4:58 - The part where they were measuring her mouth is a direct easter egg to her early days when people criticized her for having a sausage (big) mouth which is seen to be ugly in east Asia. 5:09 Skin Whitening - This is not a direct reference to her own experience but a metaphor of how in east Asia lighter skin = prettier. In the western world, we like to sunbathe in hopes of getting tan, in Asia, it is the other war around. 5:24 Freak Show Scene - For a long time, she pushed herself to learn a whole bunch of stunts such as Rings (5:26), ribbon dancing (6:29), pommel horse (8:10), pole dancing (Not shown in music video), and many other rhythmic gymnastics for her concerts and music videos. For her Dancing Forever concert back in 2006 (where she wore the same blue dress), she practiced 3 months for the ring and pommel horse performance only to be criticized for poor performance. Haters created gifs to make fun of her (6:31). 6:59 Sketch - This sketch was a CGI art created by a hater in 2006 after she won the Golden Melody Award (Equivalent to the Oscars but for singes in Asia), it was created to make fun of her saying she looked like a red fried shrimp. People also called her a gymnast rather than a singer. The original posts also had numerous hateful and racist comments. 7:12 and 8:16 Cuttlefish Dress - The dress was her red carpet dress at the 2008 Golden Melody Award, once again people made fun of it saying she looked like a cuttlefish and tampon. She was nicknamed Queen of seafood for years, hence the seafood restaurant in the music video. Perfectionist: Being tied up, getting measured, the statue of Venus, being controlled, and the measuring tape outfit. These are all metaphors of how society put her on a pedestal nitpicking every imperfect part of her and as a result, she tried extremely hard to appease everyone and wanted to be “perfect” The point where she slaps herself and onward is a reflection of her coming to realize she’s been trying to please others for far too long, the fat, waitress, and nurse version of Jolin all popping is to show her finally embracing her true self, no longer living to please others. 8:02 Throwing Up Negative Emojis - No more keeping all the negativity in, no more holding back, break free and let them out, no need to be bound by them. 8:13 Finally free to enjoy all the seafood When the prisoner and judge version of herself embrace each other, it symbolizes Jolin coming to terms with herself, realizing everything she’s been through is part of her too, and learning to embrace herself. If you haven’t noticed, in the beginning when the camera zoomed into her head she was not smiling, but when it zoomed out she had a smile on her face, this was to show she is now happy with herself. Besides the message on beauty standards, this music video also includes layers of easter eggs from Jolin's own experience to politics and psychology. The very beginning also has scenes from her previous works in her head and numerous other details.
