I have a suggestion I would love for you to cover: some of the Total War trailers. I think in particular you'd love the Total War Warhammer 3 trailers, but the Total War Three Kingdoms are some of my personal favorites. Most of the trailers except for announcement trailer are shot using the game's engine, and they tend to be built on powerful music and dialogue moments with beautiful massive cinematic shots.

That was him on the poster. He used to be the commander of the overwatch team. He essentially turned into batman once overwatch was disbanded. The other masked character you were referring to was Reaper. He was very good friends with soldier 76 before they had a falling out.

@@kaizammit Soldier 76 is also quite old for an action hero type person, he is likely in his 60's+, and has been fighting for years. This is why he feels heavy and slow in my mind. The glowing hologram in front of his face you commented on is his ultimate ability that is basically just aim bot. The missiles are another ability. Also if I remember correctly, Reaper once was the leader of Blackwatch (Overwatch's secret task force that did in secret what the heroic faces of Overwatch couldn't do in public) and he was just a human until Talon(evil terrorist organization that Reaper, Widow, and Sombra are a part of)'s mad scientist Moira experimented on him leaving him as he is today. The "falling out" was when Reaper went too far on a mission and exposed Blackwatch to the world leading to everything being shutdown. They both officially died in a bombing of the Overwatch HQ during the fallout of the incident (I think Talon's doing) this is why Soldier wears a mask as he is very recognizable. I know you intend to do all the cinematics eventually, but I would love to see you review the "Kiriko" Overwatch cinematic next

Additional tidbits of Overwatch Lore; His full name is John Francis "Jack" Morrison, and his codename, Soldier: 76 is taken from his participation in a US supersoldier program that was launched in response to the Omnic Crisis. He adopted it since Jack Morrison was thought dead after the Overwatch HQ incident mentioned above, and he preferred it that way. Gabriel Reyes (Reaper) was Soldier: 24, participant of the same program.

Interesting fact about the character in this one, it was a hero that Chris Metzen had designed before his Blizzard days (or at least long before Overwatch), and he finally got to bring him to life in through this game. Chris is one of the creative forces behind Blizzard. He left for a while, but came back recently, and set the direction for the War Within cinematic (insisted they go back to manual rigging and stuff to get back to crafting the emotion and stuff).

So one bit that you might have not caught was what the "molten rock" was that was flying after the explosion. It was a pinata. They were smuggling weapons in crates of pinatas. And so when Soldier 76 picks up the pinata and smashes the guy's head in with it, there are lollipops and candy falling out of it.

the fun thing about rewatching these cinematics for me is that looking at the background, i know exactly where all the characters are at all times because the locations are almost the same as the games maps. watching alejandra walk up the road, i recognize that background, ive walked that very path ingame. i look at these and go “oh, this is first point! i know where this is!” and its honestly just so cool knowing that even in a game, ive walked the same path that told this story.

The emotion modeled into the omnic's (robot's) face is excellent, and a credit to the concept and modeling team. The dent on the head has pushed in the most presented glowing "eye" at the top outside corner so, even though the character cannot change the expression on its face, its sadness and victimization shows when it tilts its head downwards. The same for the use of its eye lights being inset. When the head tilts down, the darker inset ring holding the eye shows at the bottom, while the top covers more of the light, making it seem as though the robot's eyeline is looking up under saddened eyelids.

I’m glad you picked up on his eyebrows. It’s amazing how much emotion they communicated in his character by just having his eyebrows move. That gentle scene bt him and the girl is so good. I agree the music really carries the emotion. Something I like about this one and the original trailer is the theme of inspiring children. Both start with a grumpy tween and by the end they are hopeful again and inspired by an overwatch hero (tracer in the original and here soldier 76). Idk I just like it as a wholesome detail that it’s important for people, often kids, to reclaim their hope for goodness in the world. “The world could always use more heroes.”
@seanjacoby88895 ай бұрын
It's really remarkable hearing you key in on how heavy they make 76 feel, because I'd never intellectually put that together. Definitely the Batman vibe, but the more aged Batman. Combining that with the knowledge of the game universe, and how old 76 is, combined with the weight of his past (both personal and professional), you putting your finger on that one aspect of the cinematography actually got me hit in the feels a little more. Then all that you break down leading up to the moment where he saves the girl, and I never really connected to the tenderness with which he holds her as he gets up. Choked me up, and I've seen this cinematic so many times already...oof. I cannot WAIT for you to go over the "Kiriko" cinematic.

Hey Kai! I'm one of those that has no intention of making film but I love getting to better understand all the details that really make a film great. This cinematic really nailed the lighting and the way the camera work gave some unique momentum to Soldier 76 was awesome. I think my favorite cinematic tool out of all your breakdowns is that thread of story telling. I've really noticed now that I'm a sucker for the kinematic and match cuts to lead us through a film. When done well it's almost like a rollercoaster ride or something! Thanks for showing us the how and why!

This entire Cinematic takes place in one of the Overwatch maps. One team starts a bit further down from where the girl comes out of the building and there is a truck with a payload (very similar to the truck the bad guys load with crates). The Attacking team must stay near the truck to make it move forwards while the Defending team tries to take them out. If the Defending team is near the truck it goes backwards and if no one is near it it just stops. If attackers can push the payload all the way to the end before the time runs out they win, and if they fail the defenders win. The backdoor alleys that the girl run through after the thugs steal her purse is also part of the map and can be used to take cover from enemy fire or to try to flank behind the Defenders/Attackers. Many of the Overwatch cinematics take place within an In-Game map. I can't really tell if it's a good way to save costs (as the map is already built, or is built later based on the cinematic) or if it is mostly just another way to introduce the viewers to the game. The Cinematics will then introduce both the characters/heroies and the maps at the same time.

overwatch has an entire universe, there are a bunch groups in the overwatch universe. a couple being overwatch, blackwatch, null sector and talon. null sector are the omnics (robots) that rise up against humans being led by ramattra. overwatch is a group of heroes, and blackwatch, blackwatch has mercenaries and assassins. people that would do jobs for money and they were led by a guy called gerard who was (rip) widowmakers husband and reaper, soldier76 (the guy in this animation) helped blackwatch. blackwatch members include reaper, genji, moira and mcree also yes, that is him in the poster, remember the mei cinematic? she was in touch with overwatch and then she slept for 9 years. and during those 9 years overwatch was disbanded because of the law which is why soldier76 says "not anymore" when the girl asks "you are one of those heroes, arent you?"

Commander Jack Morrison was an American soldier who was picked to join Overwatch during the Omnic Crisis (alongside his friend Gabriel Reyes), and eventually appointed as it's leader by the UN, which caused tension between him and Gabriel who was the original leader, and thought things should be run differently. Gabriel, codenamed Soldier:24 during the Army genetic experiments on him pre-Overwatch days, was chosen to lead Blackwatch, the covert ops branch of Overwatch, a position he ended up preferring as it let him do things the way he wanted. Eventually he was swayed by Doomfist's rhetoric that Overwatch was weak due to the restrictions placed on it by the UN, and he confronted Morrison over several missions that Blackwatch had run causing increased scrutiny on both organizations. A massive explosion in Switzerland during this argument left both men presumed dead by the public, and Overwatch being shut down due to what came out as a betrayal by Reyes. After this, raids on several former Overwatch facilities and weapons caches led to the manhunt for a new player on the field codenamed Soldier:76, who had 'appropriated' his gear from these locations, including his experimental assault rifle and tactical visor (ingame the rifle has an underslung rocket launcher, and the Tac-Visor is his ultimate, allowing him to auto-aim at targets in his line of sight). He has since been identified as a vigilante, taking the fight to the mercenary group Talon as often as he can. Reyes went on to join Talon, taking the codename Reaper, and suffering from the continued experiments done on him by Moira O'Deorain in concert with his prior genetic enhancements, leaving his cells in a constant state of decay and regeneration, granting him supernatural-like abilities (like moving around as a smoke stream and shading through obstacles). The location this takes place in is a town in Mexico called Dorado, where the power company Lumerico built several fusion reactors inside ziggurats to power the town and other locations in Mexico. The Festival de la Luz is taking place at this time (hence all the lights and pinatas) celebrating the end of the Omnic Crisis where the omnics had destroyed Mexicos power infrastructure and left them in the dark.
