No one has mentioned how Jessie’s hours of ‘zoning out’ playing a first person shooter game saved their skins here. To use a pistol calmly and so accurately in that high adrenaline situation is incredibly difficult. Jessie just stood and delivered like a western gunslinger.

11:15 it's an analysis technique in chemistry called Gas Chromatography, where you dissolve the sample in a solvent and inject it into that machine. It can be used both to identify components of the sample (qualitative analysis) and to determine the concentration of components (quantitative analysis). This isn't stuff they'd teach you in high school, Vince and Peter really did their research.

This is probably in the top 10 of my favourite episodes in Breaking Bad. First of all the foreshadowing of Walts and Jesses relationship. Like the way Jesse acted with the cartel he was like Walter and also that he had cut his hair etc. Then when Walter called Flynn accidentally Jesse tells how Walter actually feels like Jesse is his son.

I would honestly say that Breaking Bad is THE grand modern western. It's subtle, but all the elements are there. This is our generations Dollars trilogy or John Wayne movies, except set in modern times and not the wild west. Also, I love Jesse's character development so much. He got the looks of approval from Mike and Gus. And why shouldn't he? He shows loyalty, he shows smarts, he can handle himself when backed against the wall, and he has gone from cooking with chilli powder, to being very little below Walt's standard.
@popenfresh Жыл бұрын
You say that but if you rewatch @22:00 Mike was about to shoot Jesse in the back of the head before taking a bullet from one of the Cartel guys that was left alive. They didn't give a shit about Jesse. He was supposed to die right there.
@transformersrevenge9 Жыл бұрын
@@popenfresh no he wasn't. If Gus wanted him dead, why did he not let Jesse drink the poisoned alcohol with the rest of the cartel? And why did Gus's personal hospital have both Jesse's blood and medical records, if only Gus and Mike were coming back?
@popenfresh Жыл бұрын
@@transformersrevenge9 Why wouldn't Gus have a back up plan for shit going side ways? What if Mike got taken out and he needed Jesse alive to help him get out? What if Mike died and he needed another dog to have his back? Of course he'd have Jesse's blood type and recovery set up. If you're going to have a contingency plan you might as well have it flushed out for every scenario.
@transformersrevenge9 Жыл бұрын
@@popenfresh I looked up multiple discussion about it, and the general consensus is that it's not something the directors intended. It's a bad angle of Mike keeping his gun pointed in any direction. Oh yeah, and Mike gave his word to Jesse that they are either all going home, or none of them are. Mike is a man of his word. Especially with Jesse, who is like a son figure to him. Even when he was mad at Walt for Killing Gus, he didn't pull the trigger on Jesse.

Very few shows that run multiple seasons are so well constructed that every episode is essential to the whole. Breaking Bad is the first show I have ever watched where I don't think there is a single scene that is wasted. You mentioned the flashback earlier where we saw what happened to Gus's original partner, and how there is symmetry with this episode. Tiny details that are mentioned, glossed over, or get a brief moment of screen time in an early season turn out in much later seasons to be a "Checkov's Gun" detail that fills in some part of a character's arc. So darn good!

10:30 I think you missed Walt's Freudian slip, accidently calling Walt Jr. "Jessie". Jessie is seen as a sort of a Surrogate Son of his double life, impart more time, advice, knowledge and his self (real self) than his own son. Trying keep him around, be needed, to steer his future, disapproving of the junkie girlfriends, is paternal instinct.

Crazy that the only real innocent victim in this story (no secrets, lies, etc) was Walt Jr, and he didn't have a fraction of the screen time that other characters do. While experiencing a parent's death at an early age is never considered an excuse to commit crimes, it does provide insight to partly why certain people behave throughout their lives the way they do. Not everyone is the same. Brains behave different for everyone, and not everyone will behave "normally" after a traumatic experience like the one Walt went though.

The scene of Walt talking about his father , i can relate to it except i honestly don't know what is worse to endure , watching them die instantly or slowly or the way i witnessed my father pass!!!! My father was in the hospital for something that wasn't even that serious but somehow he had a heart attack while he was staying there & went on life support , i had to watch him on a hospital bed brain dead in a coma hooked up to machines that were keeping him alive or so i thought so at the time because of the nurses attempting to keep us all optimistic but i could honestly see he was long dead & gone already & all those machines weren't really keeping him alive, they were just forcing his organs to continue to work!!!! He was already dead like a frog in science class that u shock to see his muscles move , thats what it was basically like & he wasn't just laying there still like he was asleep like they show in the movies , the entire time he was on that bed , his body was flopping around like a fish with his eyes flickering open & close every other second & his tounge was hanging out of his mouth!!!! I stopped going to see him because i didn't want to see him like that or have that site of him like that have to be my last memory of him!!! I was just waiting for all the adults in my family to finally come to they're senses & return to reality so they would just pull the plug & get it over with!!! He was already long dead , they were just hurting themselves by going there & torturing themselves more by having false hopes!!!! I was a kid but was the only person in my family that understood the truth!!!! He passed on Christmas day , as messed up as that is , i was actually relieved that it was over with!!!!!

Interesting you mention a "western approach" to the canera work! Vince himself said that Breaking Bad is very heavily inspired by westerns and is a type of contemporary western. This is turned up to 11 in better call saul with it being more faithful with the cinematography of westerns with extreme closeups on peopels faces and wide shots as well as very old timey music you would hear in a 1960s western, mostly in the black and white sequences
