Throughout this series, every time you used the word "cringe," I thought of this episode. Also, it speaks to my wife's sort of demented sense of humor that the dinner scene is possibly the hardest I've ever heard her laugh, as Jesse holds that glass of water like a security blanket.

Walt whistling ''Lily of the Valley' is diabolical. Also, the speech about Empire business really reminds us of what Walt was always about. Hurt pride and ego. Since episode 1, we have known that he wasn't some poor soul, grasping for the last straw (the drug business) to survive. His friends offered him money, and he turned it down, because he is bitter that he sold out of the Grey Matter business. And that bitterness about missing out, drives him. The cancer just set him free. Had he been healthy, he would have just been bitter inside. But once he knew that he is dangerously ill, all bets were off. And the crazy thing is that this isn't some reveal late into season 5. We have known it the entire time. And it's crazy how this buyout is a parallel to the first time in life he sold out. It all came full circle. Not to mention that the awkward dinner scene is yet another manipulation by Walt. Jesse is firmly on Mike's side, and yet Walt has him stay for dinner, to see how miserable and sad Walt's life is, and how the meth business is the only thing he has. So when it comes down to Walt vs Mike over the issue, the emphatic Jesse chooses emotion (Walt) over rationality (Mike). Also, the dinner scene shows more than anything, that despite everything, Jesse has almost a kid like politeness to him. I love that aspect of his character. He can be tough when he needs to be, but he is naturally respectful towards people like Skyler and Mike.
@shineinouzen7412

What’s crazy is even if Walt was angry about the Gretchen & Elliot situation. He didn’t have to give up his share of Grey Matter share. He could have been a founding member with Stock in the company without having to be involved in anything. But of course his pride and ego didn’t let him.

I love the scene where Walt tells Jessey about Grey matter, it's a peek through his thought process, how he maybe feels he has built this empire and won't get out as he did with Grey matter, won't let his talent be lost again, or the opportunity to be a millionare fly off his hands again. Lovely cross of stories Aswell as the show off his reality with the family situation, making clear his point (other than pride) how he "needs this" so much, to manipulate him .. again

Walt's speech about his grey matter buy out is phenomenal... to me it's up there in the top 5 of best scenes in the show. Walt NEVER gave us the real reason why he's doing everything, it's the very first time you get a glimpse into his true motivations. We know he's an absolute genius who got robbed of his future (in a way), but he has paid for his cancer treatment long ago. So why continue ? His regret is the reason, amongst other reasons like revenge pride etc Idk I think it doesn't get the attention it deserves.

For me, and maybe it’s because I know people like him (minus the murder, more petty crimes like stealing stamps and knickknacks from Hobby Lobby), he’s not as scary as some of the other villains because he’s an open book, his motives are clear and laid bare, you never know what gus is capable of, you don’t even know his motives half the time, you never know what even Walt will do, but Todd, all in all, a simple guy

In the first scene there are four men. Todd, who doesn't give a fuck. Walt, who may give a fuck at some level but is sooo far gone. Mike, who tries to make money for her granddaughter but price is getting real high. Jesse, who refuses to take part in that macabre scene... but still stays in business. EDIT: "The greatest thing Walter has cooked is Jesse." Now there's is an interesting point to think about. Walter has been the one to make him grow but... yeah

The thing is people like to justify Walt's decisions cause he's just "taking care of his family in desperate circumstances" (and to some degree this concept is involved in the dislike for Skylar), but people forget that he denied the money and job from Elliot (that would've sufficiently covered him and his family) out of pride. I mention this here cause they mention that past business in this episode, and so it almost makes his current and past actions reasonable. But we forget that HE was the one who left that business randomly out of nowhere before it became successful (and left Elliot and Gretchen to struggle and try to make it a success by themselves without a critical part of the team). He even, out of his own decision, took a buyout to leave and agreed to the money that was offered. And also if he didn't want the business to use his research to contribute to its success, he could have also set that out in the buyout negotiations. Or otherwise didn't even try to negotiate for some kind of royalty system depending on how successful the business becomes. He seemed to just want to take that buyout money he agreed to and leave. It's not even like they pushed him out cause they make it very clear and stress that he just left randomly out-of-the-blue (and he himself doesn't even deny it when Gretchen brings this up). He didn't even need to take the money or job later from Elliot as a "charity" as he was so averse to. Elliot even phrased it as just giving to Walt what he's owed (so not a handout. And Walt could've even made that very clear before accepting and only if the agreement enshrined that viewpoint). But instead he took a more dangerous and risky path (for not only himself, but also his family) due to his pride.

I have a theory what "personal circumstances" led to Walt's sudden out-of-the-blue split from Elliot and Gretchen (cause just a heads-up: they never fully explain that even up to the end). What I'll be explaining here is from past episodes before this episode, so there's not really spoilers here. In a specific flashback with Walt and Gretchen, there seems to be romantic inferences between them (the one where Walt is explaining the composition of the human body with Gretchen...it's pretty clear in the last shot of that interaction when he leans into her a bit more than "friends" or "colleagues" would. And the creators of Breaking Bad who are all about detail wouldn't do that on a whim). There are also some interesting undertones and interactions when Walter and Skyler first meet them again as well as some other interactions. And then the very deliberate choice to have Gretchen stress "left me" right after saying "left us". That could be reading too much into it, but Breaking Bad writers, who are so intensely about detail and dialogue, feeling the need to add and stress that. When if she just said "left us" and left it at that, that would've made fine sense enough for a friend or colleague group. I dunno, seemed odd is all. Now even if there were romantic undertones, it's not fully clear whether they were fully together at the time she goes with Elliot, but I don't think so cause he would've brought this up (especially at the tense lunch where he would've especially brought this up to show another wrong that Gretchen and Elliot did (considering how pissed he was at this lunch)). Also the sudden departure of Walter is stressed by the characters to be a very "out-of-the-blue" leaving. Like it wasn't just a simple departure of work colleagues, a simple buyout, or a differing of opinions and separation due to that, it was stressed quite a bit that he just oddly left out-of-the-blue when they returned to the house (or something to that effect if I recall). So what makes the most sense to me from all this is that: Walter initially was trying to go after Gretchen (before he met his future wife), but she ultimately decides to go with Elliot. Due to Walter's massive pride and borderline narcissism, that was too much for him (and especially to reject him for his friend on top of that). So he abandons both them and the business randomly (that he doesn't realize at the time would become so successful). This would also make it make more sense why he would just leave without explanation (not even explaining properly years later why). Cause that would be too much for his pride to admit (and even maybe admitting he had feelings for her when she went with Elliot, would be too much for his pride to explain, especially when she rather went for his friend rather than him). But anyways this could all be a massive stretch, but some of their interactions and inferences throughout the series and during flashbacks makes me think at least some of this.
@strogaa
@strogaa Жыл бұрын
Makes sense. The bad blood feeling must be only on Walt's side. Elliot greeted him like an old and long missed friend on the birthday party. And the way he offers Walt to work together etc makes me also feel, that he has no idea about any of Walt's inner feelings on the whole situation. Gretchen on the other hand seemed a bit more careful in the welcome scene, but also happy to see an old friend again. Makes me think that she knows, that there are some unsolved stories between her and Walt, although she has no idea of how serious it is for Walt.
@MossyQualia
@MossyQualia Жыл бұрын
Good analysis, but it's probably not Gretchen choosing Elliot over Walt causing the rift, since it would be very obvious to everyone and not "out of the blue" why Walt had a grudge. We know Walt's ego is extra sensitive when it comes to money and power, but not romance. When Skyler cheats on him, he lashes out for a couple episodes, but it never gets out of hand like it does when money and power are involved. Based on Skyler's suspicions about Walt cheating with Gretchen, Gretchen's language "you left me", and mentioning she, Walt, and her family being together on the fourth of July weekend, Walt and Gretchen were probably dating at that point. Walt hammers on her about how she's the "rich girl adding to her millions", meaning her family was rich before Gray Matter, and with what we know of Walt's ego, he probably harbored deep resentment over their class difference that he never expressed. Gretchen and Walt also had clashing temperaments to begin with -- we see in the flashback Walt dismissively laugh off Gretchen's idea about the human soul. Then, something happened that weekend that's left ambiguous which broke the camel's back. Her mentioning her father and brothers specifically being there, I think it's implied one of them crossed a line in a way only Walt noticed, and with class difference being highlighted, it could've been like an off-color joke about money that Walt took very personally. This angle would explain why Walt seems to have a much deeper grudge against Gretchen than Elliot. Gretchen then got together with Elliot, and Walt's bitterness would grow as their business succeeded, probably thanks to both the work Walt left behind and financial backing from Gretchen's family. He deludes himself into thinking they cut him out, even though he admits to Jesse that he willingly sold his share of Gray Matter.

One thing that kinda gets to me now is that Jesse goes from his very understandable and character-suited reaction to Todd's murdering of the kid to being like, more like his old self in the dinner scene. I dunno, I get that he's supposed to be jaded/hardened but it felt a bit abrupt and I would have liked to spend more time with Jesse finding his way to get over the situation. disagree with in the regard that Jesse is the one that spends the most time with kids. Walt was a school teacher with 2 kids. Mike spends most of his free time with his granddaughter. Jesse has a bleeding heart and a very soft spot for kids. Jesse is also the least jaded one to the world. He has had a somewhat rough life as a drug addict and dealer but had a good childhood. Walt had his lifes work stolen from him and then had to see it on the news for the rest of his life as a gigantic business that he sees as being built off his hard work. We dont know a lot about Mike but he is obviously a trained killer that while has some morals understand what needs to be done for the most part. jesse is just a kid, not an old monster like the rest of the cast.

I like Walt's transformation into Heisenberg throughout the whole show, but now that he's reached his final form in the last season, I like him considerably less just because the mustache twirling gets to be a bit extra at times, imho. That said, the final season is not weak, by any means. There's so much action, so many amazing twists, and I feel like the writers did an incredible job of wrapping it all up in the end. I adore Bryan Cranston so much, and it is to his credit that I absolutely despise Walter White, he only has the capacity for pride and envey. Without meaning to sound too psychopathic, all the actors are phenomenal, I meant truly phenomenal; there isn't a single performance in Breaking Bad that isn't a 100% believable, all the actors should be considered the pinnacle of the profession.

Sadly, Todd is one of the most accurate portrayals of someone on the spectrum that I've seen in the media. This dude does fucked up things but it's the way he approaches shit.

I just have no idea how you can control yourself not to watch the whole show till the end😂 I watched this show with my mom. She was a cool person ❤ I'm trying to get on your patreon(which is difficult in Poland), but if I might suggest a movie - 'Pieces of a woman' - I think it has an interesting cinematography, but I don't know why😉 It's....(I don't know how tosay 'gutwrenching' ???). Also I respect you for treating Walt as full villain, not like a 'bada**. ./sorry for bad engliłsh🥺

I can never decide if Todd keeps the spider bc of his serial killer instinct, ir he just thinks it's cool. Either way, boooo Todd.

I don't think those things are mutually exclusive. I can see him liking the tarantula and thinking it's cool, because... big cool tarantula AND also keeping it as a trophy (for both killing/melting the kid and pulling off the train heist). Both aspects fit his personality quite well imo. I think it would be very appealing to him as an awesome trophy for his awesome fun day, and bonus: the trophy is also a cool new pet. I agree, boooo Todd, ya big icky freak. Lol.

I know that he is an Actor but anything else I see Todd (Jesse Plemons) in just makes me cringe and dispise him ... killing that Kid just makes me mad. I would have shot him a second later ... such a great TV show making me feel this anger ... take care @
