16:39 I love the look Riggs gives the bomb guy when he tells him to get out, and the bomb guy immediately knows what's up. It's one of the greatest "you go, I go" scenes I can think of, and it makes perfect sense since Riggs was basically on his way out (by suicide) when he got partnered with Murtaugh and, later, essentially was made a part of his family. Riggs credits Murtaugh for saving his life, and there's just no way he's gonna let him face this threat alone.

Like you said, the diversity and racial themes were organic and not forced, unlike what happens a lot today in films. I think these types of films do more to promote diversity than some of the more overt attempts. Danny Glover is just a regular dude trying to retire in one piece and saddled with an insane partner. We can empathize with his character. I love their chemistry. Great stuff!

This movie was on rotation watch for me with License to Kill and The Last Crusade in the summer of ‘89 at my local dollar theater. I must have seen it a half a dozen times then. As this was a late 80’s action film, there are many familiar faces that show up as minor characters. Most notably, Jenette Goldstein and Mark Rolston had appeared in Aliens as Vasquez and Drake, the two smart gunners. Jenette was the detective that was blown up on her diving board, while Mark was the goon that lost the gold and ended up wrapped in plastic. In fact, now that I think about it, I don’t remember seeing Jenette survive a single film I’ve seen her in. Near Dark, Aliens, Lethal Weapon 2, Terminator 2, Titanic; none of her characters live.

That was so prevalent that Eddie Izzard did a bit on that in his standup. „The Death Star, just full of British actors“ acting out a scene of two characters in posh accents wondering why the rebels are showing up.

@@AironExTv I've always wondered if Star Wars -- Happy Revenge of the Sixth, btw -- started that whole thing or is it just something that's been around much longer. Great reaction vid! The Lethal Weapon movies were some of my favorites growing up. I never took as much notice of the political themes in them until I was much older. LW2 has major Apartheid/South African issues from that era baked into the plot. Without giving much away, LW3 has gun control and cops/former cops turning to crime in its themes. LW4 is all about immigration issues and how organized crime will hold people over a barrel and practically own them for life for wanting to leave their homes to live in the US.
