One of those movies where I didn’t feel sad, angry, or even happy when it ended. I just felt content. Felt like I just witnessed life happen, it’s so weird to explain.

The thing that I love about this story is that neither one of them tried to make a move on the other. It was all about searching for a genuine, emotional human connection beyond the physical, which at the end of the day is so much more of a real love story than a torrid affair ever could be.

I remember seeing this movie with my mom back in the day; she hated it and thought it was pointless, while I was weeping by the end and thought it was a masterpiece lmao. And especially if you have ever fallen in love with someone but it didn't work out because it wasn't the right time&place, watch this film for sure.

Yeah, this film had me nearly choking up a few times moreso because of the reflections it was casting resembling things in my life. Beautiful piece here!

The same exact thing happend to me. Tried to show it to my mom, sharing how relatable if felt. I connected with the emotion it displayed. She felt they were just wasting their time, being lazy and unsuccessful. In a weird way it gave me insight into how she thinks and made me understand her better. Kinda sad to think about but an interesting development for me.

Not sure if this is really relevant but it reminds me of something my mother said recently that made me think. “There are two types of people: doers and be-ers” meaning some people are happy just “being” and some people feel a need to always be doing something. She is very much a doer and I’m a be-er. Some people I think can go back and forth as well and sometimes we have periods where we become jaded and blasé. I suppose I just can’t imagine not being able to empathize with where the characters were at mentally and emotionally. Like surely all of us can relate? But maybe some people are just doers and know of no other life.

@@JustinWillisDevil240Z They're 'kindred spirits' but the age difference is why there can't be 'romance' between them, sure Bill Murray character could of been selfish, but he knew in the long run it wouldn't be good for her (he's old and she still young with the rest of her life ahead of her), that's why he lets her go.

I think that this film has one of the greatest conclusions ever filmed. That final moment between the two of them is the purpose of the film and everything that goes before it is only there to give the audience the context to understand that moment. The fact that the director understood that the audience didn't need to know what was said in that moment is genius. Scarlett (who was only 17) and Bill were brilliant. Bill Murray was rightfully upset when he didn't win the Oscar for this role.

Great movie. Very subtle. Doesn't hit you over the head with plot. Just two lost people connecting in a strange world. Love that they never hook up, but we know they love each other. Love that the whisper at the end was not meant for us, but we now they are going to stay connected. Powerful movie with two great actors.

Another great choice. A masterpiece of the technical aspect of filmmaking. The thing I love most is how Sofia Coppola manages to simultaneously do two things in nearly every shot using primarily camera angles and framing: 1) How densely populated and always busy Tokyo is and 2) How two people feel alone buried in it all. All through angles, framing, background, lighting, cinematography, etc. Just...Wonderful. Thanks James and hope you have a damn good 2022.

This movie is something special to me. When I first saw it in the theater I was meh… then I saw it again and it touch me. I was in a difficult moment in my life, I felt lonely. Years later I went to Japan by myself for 3 months, it was a journey I organized to find myself, to find my way, my future, to understand were I wanted to live, what I wanted to do. It was like I was free of everything and at the same time I was pressured to find my way. It was a everyday discovery, without understanding the language, the signs, the eyes full of colors, lights, view, people, sounds… but so far, far away from everything around me, because you are there living it but you feel just like a spectator, you don’t really understand, and the days goes by and you feel more and more estranged, more lonely… people around you laugh for something you think is stupid, put effort in things you do normally, don’t socialize as we (western people) do… If you find a stranger like you, you connect. And if you are on the same page more than ever, there’s no need to explain that estrangement to that person. So this movie remind me of that special 3 months of my life. A mix of loneliness and finding of myself. Now I live in Tokyo. It’s 8 years, I understand the language and a lot of things are more clear, I’m married to an amazing man, but that feeling of alienation, that memory is something i cannot and don’t want to forget, and this movie reminds me of it immensely,

I'm only 26 and this movie already hurts way more than when I first watched it in my late teens. Definitely one of those that just resonates more and more each year that goes by and the more people you've met and had to say Goodbye to. So bittersweet. I'd recommend Garden State in terms of having a similar effect in my opinion.

I saw this movie way back in 2003, and it spoke to me at a time when I was particularly rudderless. Now that I'm in my fifties, it speaks to me like it's a completely different film, telling me to not be so hard on myself for "lost" years. Charlotte spoke to me in my thirties, and Bob speaks to me now.

If bittersweet was ever defined as a movie... it's this one, and I LOVE it. The ending isn't "happy" but it ends on a good note, like Bob and Charlotte felt relief for the first time in their lives. Imagine floating aimlessly through life... and out of nowhere you get that one day of bliss for the first time in many years. It's a time you'll remember even when you're old and gray. I adore this movie... even if I have the odd existential crisis watching it lol.

I love this movie. I remember going to see it at a little ‘art’ theater, right by my house. I’d never heard of it before, but I’d heard from a couple people that it was good & I happened to respect their taste in films & music. I went by myself & was completely lost in thought the entire walk home & for the rest of the night. It just put me in the same type of happy, melancholic mood that I’ve had after sharing those strange, wonderful little encounters with people that this film portrays so accurately.

No one forgets their first time with _Lost In Translation._ I saw it once in 2003 & will likely never watch it in full again - the first viewing was special & the memory of it's experience is enough. The 2007 Indie musical _Once_ is another one to check out.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It hits way to close to home. Scar Jo is incredible, but for me Bill Murray as Bob Harris is one of the most under rated acting performences of the 21st century. You just feel his depression and lonliness in every scene, he's just non-stop immersed in the role. This movie is pretty hard for me to rewatch honestly just cause of how emotional it makes me, hopefully I'll make it through this reaction lmao.

This is one of those films I can watch over and over again and it has the same emotional effect each time. Yet, I can't tell you any "plot narrative", only the mood and emotional state it puts me into. I find it to be wise and reassuring while admitting human imperfections. (Also I have lived abroad as a westerner in Asia so I can relate to the "awkwardness" factor captured in the film.)

I enjoyed your commentary on this unique, wonderful film. Coppola wrote the screenplay and chose all the music used in the movie. (which won an Oscar). One of many scenes that for me stood out: Charlotte takes the train to Kyoto and sees a couple who are going to be married. There are no words spoken in these scenes but they convey a lot. I think Sofia Coppola shares a lot about her own life and challenges through the characters in the movie. I remember reading that Sofia was surprised that so many people related to this movie and the struggles of her characters.

One of my top four Bill Murray movies. I went to see this in the theater on a whim and it was one of those movies that sinks into you slowly. I kept thinking about it and then I went and saw it again. Sometimes we need to connect with someone we wouldn't normally connect to, even if it's just a day or a week. This is a beautiful film that never really got the appreciation it deserved. Great reaction. You have this mellow jazz voice that makes me think of late night radio DJs.

Lost In Translation is one of those films that I find myself returning to every few years and I'm not 100% sure why. I love Bill Murray and I love Scarlett Johansson's low-key persona, plus the off-kilter humour that surprises you. But the main reason, I think, is how absorbing and utterly willing it is to settle and ruminate on the moment. You could say, to borrow a phrase of today, that the movie is "such a vibe". The film is very depressing to me. It is very quiet and still and lonely - and beautifully shot and a suitably melancholically pretty soundtrack. What's funny is that the only other movie that feels like this to me is 'Her' with Joaquin Phoenix; both revolve around a very introspective, lonely, quiet person who feelsdisconnected from the world and manages to find solace with an unexpected partner. And then I found out that the writer/director of Lost in Translation (Sofia Coppola) dated the writer/director of 'Her' (Spike Jonze) prior to the making of both these films. It has since been discovered that both films took moments and themes from their relationship and so they are considered unintentional companion pieces. Love your reactions my dude. Keep up the great work.

Certainly a film about connections and I loved the way it ended. Showing how these two people felt about one another and experiencing the realness of their spirits. Such a sweet and heartfelt film. If interested, check out "Up In The Air" from 2009 with George Clooney. Worth seeing for sure.

I love this film. The opening scene when Bob is looking at the building from the cab was shot in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo (close to where the Park Hyatt Tokyo, the hotel that the film was shot in, is located). I did get to visit it to see some of the locations of the shoot there. The bars there have a few cocktails themed after the movie. If you have the chance I would highly recommend visiting Japan

Movie was a beautiful moment in time. Tokyo’s moved on just like it wasn’t like it was in the 80’s anymore but just as much a star of the movie as Scarlet and Bill. Touch of Brief Encounter about it the movie. Scarlet almost had me tearing up near the end a little myself, even now. Also, Sofia put together such a perfectly balanced soundtrack to the film, one of my favourites.

Earlier this year, I watched this movie for the first time in many many years...forgot how good it was. Again, a movie that draws you into its world, even though most of it is a hotel...love the hotel bar with the Tokyo cityscape backdrop, the karaoke scene, and the final kiss goodbye (I'd like to think they kept in touch in some way...)

This movie stuck with me a long time after I watched it. It’s rare to see a movie show that Agape love (acceptance and support of another without guarantee of reciprocity) and friendship can be as, or more, important than romance. The animated movies Brave, Frozen, and to a lesser extent Tangled, did a similar thing for the importance of Family and friendship over romance. Hopefully we’ll see more. Thanks James. The blurring of the background is very interesting. If I remember correctly this movie was made by Sophia Coppola in reflection on her relationship with Spike Jones. Spike Jones later made the wonderful movie "Her" reflecting back on the relationship from his perspective and used the same stylistic choice to convey the same feeling.

You should watch _The Rules of Attraction._ It was directed by the guy who co-wrote _Pulp Fiction_ and based on a book by the same guy who wrote _American Psycho._ And it's absolutely your kind of movie. James, Some interesting facts-- I found out that FUMIHIRO HAYASHI, the Japanese actor who played "Charlie Brown" in Lost in Translation died of cancer in 2011 at age 46. He was married and survived by his wife and two young daughters. From what I've read Sofia Coppola and her family spent a fair amount of time in Japan when she was a young adult. Her family hired Fumihiro to be her tour guide and translator during her stay in Tokyo. He was an artist and actor. They became good friends and Sofia hired him for the 2003 role in Lost in Translation. Best to you--

I always felt this was a loose adaptation of the 1971 movie "Follow Me!" (also known as The Private Eye). That movie was in London though and has some amazing shots of the city and Piccadilly of the 1970s. It has young Mia Farrow as an American in London (hippy-esc) who marries a conservative Brit. Very similar themes. Young marriage. Disillusioned young woman exploring a foreign city to try to find some connection and to find herself. She is a bit lost in a new marriage, trying to figure out her identity. She meets a strange quirky companion that she feels free of all these worries with and they explore the city together and build a friendship that ends up strengthening her and helping her to move forward in her life. You might consider watching it. Great performance by Topal as well. And amazing score by John Barry. Almost steals the show.

This is one of my favorites. Such beauty and melancholy. Another romance i really loved that comes to mind right now is a hungarian film called "On body and soul" (2017) if you wanna check it out.

Another filmmaker here - really happy you enjoyed it! If I had to name a single favorite movie, I would have to name Lost in Translation. It's delicate in a way few, or if I'm being completely honest, no other movie has in my eyes managed since. When it came out, it was exactly what I needed to see. I was at the beginning of my journey to discover film, first sparked off by Road to Perdition and then accelerated by American Beauty, and it inspired me to further venture into relatively smaller indie features. It taught me that amazing stories are constantly being told outside the blockbuster scene. They may not be as flashy or as grandiose as the latest Star War, but that's the beauty of storytelling: no matter how small a production, every story has the power of potentially changing someone's life for the better. For me, one of the most memorable times it happened, it was Lost in Translation. I saw it twice on its initial run, and have since seen it about ten times in the theaters. Don't really know how many times I've seen it on various home video formats. But realizing it's been over a year since my last viewing, I think there's soon going to be one more. Thank you, James! Like the Before Trilogy - Lost in Translation has a special place in my heart after having a similar 'travelling romantic connection' years ago while I was abroad. The whisper into Charlotte's ear is (IMO) one of cinema's greatest romantic moments. And the fact that it wasn't scripted and only Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannsson know what was said makes it extra special. I put it along side Jessie and Celine in the record booth in Before Sunrise for wonderful moments in cinematic love. Great video by the way ;)

Ok James if u like this, I feel like we have similar feel for love stories so I'd recommend Dogfight 1991 and Soldier's Girl 2003. Along with Before Sunset, I think they're the best I've seen. I went to see this when it came out in 2003. It was during the day and the cinema was half empty, but from the get go I knew this movie would stay with me. The cinematography, the music, those are just two aspects that obviously stood out for me, but the relationship between Bob and charlotte is played to perfection. It could so easily have been creepy but never entered that territory at all. And that ending.............I went into the cinema that day with a heavy heart, but I came out uplifted and hopeful. I still think about this movie regularly which I suppose as a film maker, is the ultimate goal.

The first movie that pops into my head of dreamy melancholy romance, even though it's darker because it mostly takes place after one of the couple has died, is Tom Ford's "A Single Man" with Colin Firth and Julianne Moore. A poignant and beautiful film that reflects on love, loss, and life.

Love, love, love this movie, it feels so real and personal. Bill Murray gives a great performance, never knew how good of an actor he is until I saw this movie, his charisma and humor pours out of it. I adore that they took so much time building their relationship without getting physical and you could just feel the tension in every moment they were together, it's a very relatable feeling. Btw James, now that you mention romance, idk if you seen it already, but I feel like you would love "The Phantom Thread" by PTA. Great movie, beautiful cinematography, amazing acting and directing, and the score is simply something to remember. Happy new year!

The thing I loved most about the film is it captured being an alien in Tokyo perfectly. As for the kiss, it was the most platonic kiss ever. Their relationship was about intimacy, but both of them never had any intention of elevating it due to the May-December thing. They were content with just sharing for a bit.

I am so excited! You finally got to my favorite movie. Watched this for the first time when I was 24, moved out of my parents house 6 months before for first time and felt very lonely and depressed and watched this movie on a whim and fell in love. Was feeling all the emotions in this film at the time. It helped me a lot. I personally like that they never took it to the romantic route even though you know that both characters have feelings for each other. It just shows that a genuine friendship was there beyond the mutual attraction and they realized what they were experiencing was special. I truly believe that even if they weren’t isolated in a foreign country and met in the states it would be the same. It’s completely bittersweet but one of those situations you would rather happen then not, even though you know it won’t last.

You should definitely consider watching Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette. She is really brilliant at depicting lonely female protagonists. It also has some of the most beautiful photography I've ever seen and was shot on location in Versailles. It suffered from some bullshit bad faith criticism at the time due to a blink and you'll miss it shot of converse sneakers on the floor during a montage scene depicting the Queen shopping for clothes. It has a KILLER soundtrack. I think you'd love it.
