Cronenberg's _Crash_ is brilliant. It is also one of the coldest and most repellent movies ever made. Roger Ebert said it best: it's a film that explores the psychology of sexual fetishism by portraying a fetish that no one actually has and completely denying the audience any opportunity to get off.

Yes! Possibly the most ahead of its time of all of Cronenberg’s body horror masterpieces. Just change the technology they reference, and this film could have been released TODAY. Not to mention that those practical effects still hold up in the most nauseating way imaginable.

Cronenberg made a movie about the internet before the internet existed. It's like he knew that TV was simply a stepping stone to another medium or even the "virtual world" that we now live in... there's so much in this film that resonates more in 2023 than in the 80s. Crazy. Love this movie. My Fav Cronenberg film.

Videodrome is a total masterpiece, so glad you loved it! Cronenberg was so incredibly prophetic about so many things when he made this film. I love that it takes the idea that people who want to censor films always suggest - that violent films will warp people’s minds and make them violent themselves - and makes it literal. Absolute genius.

Yeah I also find some decent old movies I haven't heard of from him when he reacts to them. It's kinda admirable considering he could probably get hundreds of thousands of views more than these if he watched the new mainstream movies and watched the entire MCU or something. Love that he watches better old movies instead even though they get way less views. Shows his love for cinema and that he's not doing movie reactions solely for making money. Also learn a lot about what the intention of the filmmaker might've been and some details and explanations I might've missed from the movie from his commentary.

As others have said Cronenberg is one of the best philosophical horror/body horror directors out there. eXistenz is another fantastic Cronenberg movie that i didn't see too many other people mention. Also another movie with James Woods from the 80s that has a bit of horror and surrealism (though nowhere near on this level) is Cat's Eye. Its a movie of three short stories from Steven King. I haven't seen it in a long time, so I don't know how it holds up, but James Woods is in one of the stories and there's a certain similar vibe in his portion of the story that reminds me of this
@MamadNobari Жыл бұрын
It's funny because two of his movies are the worst most boring pos I've ever seen. Crimes of The Future and Scanners. But on the other hand, the 3 other movies of his I've watched have been decent and some of them really good. I loved eXistenz and it's basically you know what before you know what. Not saying the movie's name to not spoil it. It also had an amazing prediction of the future of gaming too which was wild. Watched The Dead Zone last night and as far as his movies I've seen yet (only these 5), that one has the most straight and less confusing plot out of all of them and I thought it was pretty decent. Just finished watching Videodrome right now and I enjoyed it but I don't think it's better than eXistenz or The Dead Zone. But it has some amazing and really fun practical effects which I really appreciate from his movies. The concept also predicted social media and all that, but didn't really delve into it and the second half kinda loses the momentum and becomes uninteresting apart from the body horror stuff in my opinion. Oh I forgot, I also watched The Fly last week and thought it was pretty decent too. I think his movies have some pretty original ideas and concepts for their times, but apart from eXistenz (which I watched a long time ago and don't exactly remember its pacing) have a really slow pacing and kind makes them boring to an extent, even the good ones. It's also that we've seen so many new movies like X-Men and all that, so these concepts are old news for us and he kinda does the bare minimum with them and that's why at least one of them like Scanners isn't worth watching nowadays.

Of his horror movies, I think _Videodrome_ still speaks heavily to the social consciousness. How our desire for visual stimulation has warped us beyond recognition. Almost prophetic, to be honest. While I love his more grounded projects - History of Violence, for example - I think Cronenberg's explorations of the Flesh remain his most fascinating works. No matter how much makeup there is, he never loses sight of the human soul.

You're probably one of the best people who could do a reaction to this film. Cronenberg goes deep and gets real weird so a reaction where people are just in it for the body horror wouldn't do his work justice. I'm gonna check out Mindkiller tonight, can't wait to see what I'm in for!

I'm an analog junkie living in a digital world, and I'm trying to get my hands on Videodrome on it's old original VHS release. That being said, I absolutely loved your outlook on this even though I'm 41, and living through a modern dystopia in the modern world. They voyeurism that exists now in everyday society almost makes this look tame. James Woods lusting after the woman in the TV is no different than what happens on Twitch now, but he's not emptying out his bank account for a woman pretending to want him. A movie now nearly as old as me at 41 is terrifyingly prescient.

One of my favorite films throughout the decades. I love the score too - I have it on vinyl and cd. The composer is nonother than Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings). He started out in the industry scoring Cronenberg's films, and has gone on to be one of the preeminent composers in the industry. He's scored almost all of Cronenberg's films. This also marks the start of Cronenberg's long-running collaborations with top acting talent in his films. After James Woods, we have the following leading men: Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, Jeremy Irons, Ed Harris, James Spader, Jude Law, Ralph Fiennes, Viggo Mortensen, and Robert Pattinson. Jeremy Irons gave a lovely acknowledgement to Cronenberg for his role in Dead Ringers when he won best actor the following year for Reversal of Fortune. In his early films, Cronenberg has the lovely trick of starting with a metaphor, and - instead of leaving it as something we read between the lines - he makes it literal, physical, and fleshy, and forces us to deal with it front and center.

When “Videodrome” opened in movie theaters in 1983 my older brother and his friends went to see it after taking acid. He said it was one of the most horrific experiences of his life. The first time I watched it I was 16 and I had smoked some weed. I thought Debbie Harry was really gorgeous, that was the only reason I watched it. When her character began using razor blades and burning her breasts with cigarettes, I had to fast forward it. It was an extremely disturbing and bizarre movie, but you couldn’t turn it off. I had to watch it a second time so it made more sense, but it’s still bizarre.

David Cronenberg rocks -- The Brood (1979), Scanners (1981), Videodrome (1983), The Dead Zone (1983), Dead Ringers (1988) -- he dropped some serious flicks back when. For eighties scifi psyche horror thillers, don't sleep on The Hidden (1987), Kyle MacLachlan's next film after Blue Velvet. Kinetic plus. Also director Peter Greenaway's contributions A Zed & Two Noughts (1985) and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989), more so given the recent passing of Michael Gambon. Horrific rarely looks so stunning.

"Oblivion is not my real name, its my television name...soon all of us will have special names"......as I stare at a screen and look down the comments and see everyones chosen special name....Cronenberg saw the future and rather than warn us, just showed us the vision of what we would become. The morphing of human and tech although literal in this example, has already begun with people finding it almost impossible to detach from their phones/social media...The accuracy in the message is the horror, and we are living it for real, those who have not or do not adjust are invisible and forgotten in todays world. Scary Ish !
