Note since this is not entirely clear, don't put the vaseline directly on your lens.

Quick tip for the awesome bokeh shapes: try using cutout stamps that scrapbookers use - so many options for shapes and a clean cut without messing around with hand cutting.

I have in the past used hairspray on a UV filter. You could also try deodorant spray because it's often a white powder spray that can create a white diffusion filter.

This was a really fun episode! The humor felt a lot like episodes from a few years ago, and this had great DIY tips that professionals probably still use even if they have the actual filters. I had heard the bokeh shape tip before, but these examples really sold it for me. I seriously have to try it!

*u guys! (and Ryan! :) )* Can you use a *Variable ND Filter* + AND slap a *BLACK PRO MIST* filter on it at the same time? Will the image degrade a lot using 2 filters at once? + + Also, is Pro Mist 1/2 is too much? Would you recommend to stick to the 1/4? its like SUPER subtle...

One other place for unusual filters: the used filter bin at your local camera store. Many camera stores still keep a giant, jumbled box of miscellaneous filters that have come in with other old equipment. These can be gold mines or a total waste of time, but it's always interesting.

Quick question (and this might be a stupid one, but I haven't tried it yet cause I don't have a UV filter lying around) Would it make sense to buy a couple of cheap UV filters if you're planning on using vaseline, highlighters etc. for different stylized effects? Or would you be alright washing off the vaseline, highlighter from just the one UV filter? I imagine it would be hard to get it spotless afterwards
@WEHAVETHISDREAM2 жыл бұрын
Make your own filters and keep them separate, if you can :) Don't think you can wipe vaseline so easily, haha. So, grab some little sealed sample bags too :))

How did you get that "film" look? Is it your camera or are you doing it in post?
@filmriot7 жыл бұрын
One of the major elements in getting what we all recognize as a more filmic look, is dynamic range - which is how well your camera can handle the brightest to the darkest points. If your cam's dynamic range isn't the best, you can help it out by (say if you are outside) exposing more for the sky and bringing up the shadowed areas with a bounce, etc... Also if shooting outside like we did here - time of day is a huge factor in helping your cause... Try for earlier or later in the day (golden hour area). You'll get much more beautiful light to work with. After that - Composition is a huge factor. Work on getting competent and well composed shots. Study films with the sound off, watch what they do with the camera and why. And remember to use foreground, midground and background in your shots. Create depth. Another factor that helps is depth of field. We are all still used to DOF being a "filmic" quality - but it also helps create separation from your background thereby creating a more "competent" and pleasing shot. (Doesn't mean you always need DOF, it's just one thing you can use to boost that vibe) Another major factor to consider is color grading. If you aren't great at grading - try using LUTs, it's a great and simple way to get solid color for your shots. Check out our episodes on LUTs for an explanation on what they are and how to use them. There's a whole lot more that goes into it, but these are some of the aspects that you can start refining right away... Then start thinking heavily about your costuming and locations. Hope that helped.
