I completely disagree. I can understand your thoughts on the camera movement and having more detail or depth in the background. But for a no-budget/ low budget film, this was great. I remember when you released this film, and this was a major accomplishment, and had great DIY lesson for the film riot community. I still aspire to create an action sequence like this. So, if this is crap to you, my future in film is screwed..lol.

There were some good critiques of Losses, however, the overall review wasn't particularly fair. Or objective. For instance, Ryan hated the camera shake; he shot the scenes and now appears to come from the stance of what he would've done differently. Whereas when I initially watched Losses I thought the hand-held camera movement was purposeful, adding to the unsteadiness of the situation and conveying a balance of control and chaos during the gunfire and fighting scenes. Losses incorporated film techniques Film Riot taught prior to it's release and inspired even more lessons after. Viewers can dissect parts of the short film and find referencing material on the channel to learn how to do it themselves. Was there room for improvement? Yes. But that's the case for all works. What I liked about Losses was the very clear message: Hey! You can do this too!

@@filmriot ~ Despite your thorough roasting, I STILL really really like this Short, man. In hindsight, yes, shortcomings and flaws, but as others have mentioned in these comments, this Short is one of the very first ones that got me absolutely hooked on the entire genre on KZbin. At the time, I thought it was one of the best examples of action I had seen and sent the link to a shit ton of people; it will always have a solid spot in my memory.

I remember watching “Losses” in high school and thinking, “Man, I hope I can be as good as this one day!” Haha I still love the short. An episode like this one really helps pin-point those little details that separate a professional short from an amateur one.

I still think a sequel to this would be so dope. It doesn’t have to be long or terribly complex, but especially since Josh has a beard now and is ripped, it would be such a cool story. He has been on the run ever since, some Jason Bourne mixed with your amazing skill now in filmmaking!

Your personal growth and talent has been interesting to watch over the years. Losses was the first of film riot that I found on youtube, all those years ago. You should be immensely proud that even after your present critique....it showed folk can tell stories and share your processes with limited experience and $$$'s. I think this 'film' still holds up as fun entertainment, as it did then. Keep presenting to the beginner that they can do more without all the great toys you have today....AND maybe you can give us some short, cheap humor pieces we all grew up with as you all grew up.... My best to your future big-time success....I'll be watching.

Great video, thanks Ryan.

11:02 Does the audience really need to know who Tod was talking to, though? I think explaining that would be unnecessary. I mean, I'm nowhere near as good a storyteller as Ryan, so if anyone could elaborate on that, I'd highly appreciate it.

Hi! I hope you're having a great time! Here's what I thought about your film. 1. Overexposed. There are few scenes overexposed (especially the scenes in the forest) and it caught my intentions. Could have been much nicer if they were not overexposed. 2. Too much noise. I know it's at night and it should be dark, but you can still use some light. That digital noise was little bit too harsh. 3. VFXs. You did quite good job but there are some points you need to improve. At least we don't want to see that oddly feathered masked images. 4. Cinematography. It's quite bland. But I guess it's low budget film so you filmed in just someone's house didn't you? Than it's excusable but it could have been much better. 5. Editing and directing. I don't want to blame actors. I guess they don't do acting as a career(maybe your friends?) But what I miss is that you, as a director and editor, should take their talents out as much as possible. For example, that gagging after drinking potion seems like burping. You could have filmed and edited with much faster pace so we can feel the intense feeling. That was critique so i wrote down some points which can be improved. Disclaimer: i'm not expert, i'm just a douche who loves videos. So take this like viewer's perspective. And as a critique, i had to pin-point the underwhelming parts but i actually liked your film! As myself who's really struggling to finish even a script(yeah it really kills me), i think you are awesome to finish writing, shooting, editing etc. And there are lots of scenes that i liked! That fight scene was quite on point, mate =) it wasn't cheezy at all. So keep up!

Rightree Woah! Thank you so much! I definitely understand some of your suggestions, especially the overexposed nature of certain shots. In terms of cinematography, I would love to hear some specific ideas as to how to create more exciting shots. The suggestion about editing will definitely help me in the future, I never thought about cutting earlier to embrace the feeling of nausea. Those were the points that really stuck out to me, however all of your critiques are awesome to hear, they’ll help me grow as a filmmaker, so thanks again!
