You guys should do a series were you take one cinematographer such as, Roger Deakins, examine his work, then try to recreate scenes or lighting set ups. You could go into camera movements, lens choice, etc. just though it'd be a cool idea!

This is the highlight to every Monday. I loved the bit about location scouting, my friend and I wrote a feature and are getting ready to shoot around Spring, and need a diner-like scene. We never though about asking friends or family but it's totally worth a shot. As always, thanks for all the tips, Ryan :)

+TheOrigGearhead Same type of situation here. I wrote a feature and I need a Hunting Lodge/Isolated Hotel on the cheap for summer 2016. I've asked around, and looked online. One potential location rather rudely told me that he doesn't need any more Notoriety. What a poop.

2:40 but what if I am a young filmmaker and want to shoot a movie in someone’s terrain do I ask the person if I can shoot there (because I can’t do the paperwork and I’m not gaining revenue from the films that I do, because i just started and I’m doing it for fun) or I just shoot on friends or family’s owned places ? I know this is very específico for my case but I hope anyone can ask this answer.

@filmriot or ANYBODY who knows...can you please tell me how this effect is done: the effect where the video picture stretches out (a distortion) to convey either someone who just got hit in the head and laying on the floor..or waking up from death or waking up from a dream.. this stretch usually goes diagonally and it doesn't seem like it is done in post.

@QuarkStudios
@QuarkStudios 9 жыл бұрын
+SkyGeorge There are a bunch of state schools that are great for filmmaking. Florida State University is where my high school video teacher went, and he was a news producer for MSNBC for a long time. Keene in NH is also a safe bet, Champlain and UVM in Burlington, Vermont are good, there's tons of schools in Boston. I don't really know price ranges, but all you need to do is look at a bunch of lists and try and find one that's cheaper and people look at as being good.

Question could you explain, as best as your allowed to, how and why you've gotten sued during your career with film riot? My director seems to be very crazy when it comes to copyright. I know its a big deal, but are people really gonna sue you for copyrighted music that you give credit to?

Even if you give credit, if you make money from it and do not have their written permission to use that song or buy the rights to use it, they can easily sue you. The reason there is so many videos with popular songs is that they do not monetize their videos.

Mike Mcglasson I agree we should be cautious, but is there a 15 to 30 second rule of using copyright content? For our project I wanted to add some very short clips of different news reports (just sound) and put them together. But he recorded them instead by mic with non-actors......I think thats a little extreme. Maybe I'm wrong

+Jelle Steensma I thought it was a little bland. I give it a 6/10. Story played a back seat to all the locations they shot at. They really tried hard to connect it to the other Daniel Craig Bond movies, but it just didn't work. It moved pretty slow and the fight scenes were uninteresting.

Unless you want to get into photography, don't get a 5D. Those used to be good for video, but it's 2015 now and it's not anymore. Get a Gh4 or A7s. Or any mirrorless can
@LeviStutzman
@LeviStutzman 9 жыл бұрын
+Gordofilms7 For me, always go glass. I always upgraded camera bodies, and now I wish I had better glass. Especially when you're on a canon DSLR, there isn't much difference between cameras. Especially the 5D, its a very old camera and the only thing you're gaining is the full frame FOV, and maybe slightly better ISO performance. If I were you, I would buy the Canon 50mm f1.8, a Rokinon 35mm T1.5, and get a decent zoom lens, and maybe a wide angle like the Canon 10-18mm. That would give you some decent glass. Then, if you're making money with film, or if you just save for a while, buy a nicer camera body. Something like an a7s, or even a black magic camera. Something that would expand your possibilities. Don't worry about gear. I did for a long time and Im in a rut of not making films. It makes it really difficult when you've got alot of gear that cost alot of money and its just sitting there. Get what you need and find how to make that gear work. Its going to make you a better filmmaker.

I am future IT guy, and was watching your videos in random order for about year, but has never done anything shown. Now I upgraded my PC and wanna start filmmaking seriously, but I am really newbie and no matter how much I want to watch all your videos, there is huge amount so it's impossible. So, what do I do?

Just begin. You're paralyzed by too much information. Once you actually start you'll figure out what resources are useful and which aren't. Ryan's "write, shoot, edit, repeat" mantra is designed to get you out there, not making excuses. No more excuses ... get cracking!

What if you really want to get down to work on a short film, but you have absolutely no ideas whatsoever?

You could look at the world's issues and portray them in a different way. Hope this helps!
