@@DaisukeBeppu I have a big box set of the 50th anniversary of '2001' that was made by World Cinema Library. Only 500 of it were made. It includes the 4K of the movie, one blu ray of the movie, another blu ray of special features and a DVD of the Kubrick 3 hour documentary 'A Life In Pictures'. It also includes postcards, the screenplay, booklets and some ID cards of the two main characters, so it has a lot of great stuff in this set.

Some that I thought during the video: 1) Linktaler's animated films: A Scanner Darkly and Waking Life. 2) Some japanese animations like Akira or Angel's Egg, and maybe of Ghibli's prime material. 3) Charlie Kauffman's Anomalisa 4) Sylvain Chomet's animated films and shortfilms 5) Neco z Alenky (1988) - the surrealistic czech version of Alice in Wonderland -maybe with other short films from the director- 6) And many other classic lost pieces of animation from different ages and countries of origin -from The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) to Sita Sings the Blues (2008) 7) Paul Verhoeven's Turkish Delight and Der vierde man 8) Hable con ella by Almodóvar 9) Spielberg's first works, including 60s shorts and TV episodes (like Columbo's), TV movies, and why not Duel (1971) 10) The whole Georges Méliès' work, and try to include a profound revision of it 11) Scorsese's music documentaries (including recent George Harrison's) and Kundun (1997) 12) More of "giallo" cinema: Argento's and Bava's 13) Battleship Potemkin (1925) and other of the soviet silent cinema 14) I don’t know if it is a bit vane, but all Disney’s nature and places of the world documentaries, like The Living Desert (1953) or The Vanishing Prairie (1954) 15) Zhang Yimou's films, specially his late 80s and early 90s 16) Ang Lee's early taiwanese films 17) Kaige Chen's Farewell My Concubine (1993) 18) 4 months, 3 week and 2 days (2007) 19) Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives (2010) 20) Haneke's Funny Games (1997), The White Ribbon (2009) and Amour (2012) 21) Some 60s and 70s experimental films compilation, like Wavelenght (1967) 22) Viy (1968) and some eatern Europe classic horror 23) Many some 70s blaxploitation films 24) ... and many, many more

Wow.... what a brilliant list. Where to begin... I think that as a general comment I am in total agreement with you. I think that also you should be happy regarding item No. 18 on your list! It is great to have it. Also I share your wish regarding the inclusion of works of animation from all over the world. This would be very welcome in my and if that could happen, that would be a great time. I have also heard many others comment about the films of Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige, as well as more early Ang Lee, and I am right there with you, as well as more Apichatpong films which you have also mentioned. I would also LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a release of Wavelength!!!!! And I am a horror film fan, and so Russian horror and Italian horror as well as others would be very welcome indeed (as you also very much suggest).... Very excellent list indeed! Best regards.

koth, you know something... and your comment really makes me regret it... I actually had a little bit in the video about Spielberg films, but I cut it out during editing because my comments were not good enough I felt. I really believe that Spielberg films should be included. And I agree with you that a film like EMPIRE OF THE SUN would be a great candidate. I also have a strong admiration for films like MUNICH and ALWAYS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND (which was a CC laserdisc back in the day), as well as SCHINDLER'S LIST in particular. Also there are his action greats like JAWS and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK.

Empire of the Sun would be most welcome (and possible since Criterion seems to have a deal w Warners now), but one great gem of his that I'd love to see the CC do is The Sugarland Express. Spielberg doesn't talk much abt it, which is a shame because it truly is a textbook on film direction.

Thank you very much for this excellent comment! Well done. The greatest thing for me with KZbin is the ability to receive excellent comments like this. And, you may be in luck, because as far as I know, and if you are referring to the Olivier version of Hamlet, I believe that it is still available in the Criterion Collection. True, it is still in an early DVD version only, but it is better than nothing. But if you are commenting that you would like to see such title upgraded to blu ray, then I wholeheartedly agree with you! Well done.

However, I do what I can! And thank you very much about the glasses. I have a number of pairs of glasses, but the ones I am wearing here are my favorites. They remind me of the glasses that used to be worn by the great George A. Romero (though I don't think they are the exact model). Still, I affectionately call them my "George Romeros". I'd love to see many more Chinese and Hong Kong Films in the criterion collection. - Raise the Red Lantern - To Live - Farewell My Concubine - Better Tomorrow (probably just the first one though the second one would be nice too) - Bring back Hard Boiled and The Killer - House of Flying Daggers - Hero I'd also like to see far more classic Japanese Films. 'Humanity and Paper Balloons' would be really nice. Similarly matching Eureka's output for Mizoguchi and Imamura. Also Criterion should really get the rest of Ozu's talkies out too. The BFI releases are good but still would love to see Criterions for all of those. Still surprised that 'Floating Weeds' hasn't made it to Blu Ray in the US yet. I still have fingers crossed that the Godzilla films they are streaming make it out in a boxset sometime soon.

Daisuke I like that you mentioned Kitano, I really like his film Kikujiro, which shows a kind of softer edge to the man as opposed to films like Sonantine and Hana-bi, I feel it deserves a mention. As for films that I think should be in the Criterion Collection, I think that there's a pretty strong argument for Bela Tarr to make it in eventually, especially Satantango or Werckmeister Harmonies. I'd also really like to see Shinji Aoyama's Eureka in the collection, although I doubt that it will happen. The film's use of Sepia colour justifies it's inclusion, proving that the use of sepia tones is not an archaic or outmoded way of filming, that there is still exciting possibility in the use of this colour scheme. I also think that the Criterion Collection needs more Korean film, two directors that I would like to see enter the collection are Bong Jun-Ho and Park Chan-Wook. In particular I'd like to see the Vengeance Trilogy, Memories of Murder, The Host, or Mother enter the collection. I'd like to see Sam Mendes' Jarhead enter the collection, it's a fantastic war film, and one that inverts the typical hollywood formulae that's congealed over the course of the years. A recent film I'd like to see in the collection is Hu Bo's An Elephant Sitting Still. Sadly Hu Bo committed suicide shortly after completion of this film, and so it will be his last film, but it really is a breathtaking experience examining modern life in China. (I watched this film fairly recently, I currently live in China) My last pic would be Ken Loach's The Wind that Shakes the Barley, it's another fantastic war film that won the Palme D'Or in 2006 and really deserves to be up there with I, Daniel Blake and Kes in the collection.

I suppose I could just add that I agree with you and in particular, I agree that South Korean cinema is sadly lacking in the current Criterion Collection, which I hope changes very soon (I know that there are already a couple titles in the collection at the moment, but as you know, there is so much more out there that would be great to see with the Criterion logo... let's keep our fingers crossed).

I’ve always been shocked that there’s no Oliver Stone films in the collection, considering how highly regarded he is critically and how significant he is in film history. His more well known stuff like Platoon or JFK probably makes too much money for the studios to loan out the rights but maybe we could see one of his less well known movies get in such as Nixon or Natural Born Killers. Stone is obviously very controversial but I think his body of work speaks for itself and he’s more than earned a spot.

That is a good point you bring up. Of course, these things ultimately come down to licensing rights and IP contracts. So, if rights holders are willing to license out the rights to a film for home media distribution and private viewing, then the sky's the limit. Once again, a very good point you bring up.

Robert Aldrich’s 1972 western, ‘Ulzana’s Raid’ is one that I think should be in the Criterion collection. The film has three different cuts. So far, the only version that has been made available on Blu-ray is the US director’s cut. For European cinemas, Burt Lancaster, who co-produced the film, was allowed to make his own cut and it included some excellent scenes not seen in the director’s cut. In the 1980s, WDR edited the film for German television and created an extended version that combined scenes from both versions. This particular version became so popular with fans that Universal released it on VHS in the late 90s. Criterion are the best candidates to give this film justice and should consider remastering and releasing all three versions on Blu-ray.

Shoot the Pianist (François Truffaut)- has Criterion DVD release, needs an upgrade The Killer (John Woo)- has Criterion Laserdisc and DVD, needs an upgrade with non-upscale transfer To Kill a Mockingbird (Robert Mulligan)- what a masterpiece that deserves a better transfer Se7en (David Fincher)- has Criterion Laserdisc Trainspotting (Danny Boyle)- same thing- Laserdisc upgrade Pulp Fiction (Quinton Tarantino)- classic and Laserdisc upgrade Scarface 1932 (Howard Hanks)- we all know De Palma’s version- let’s get the original on BD War and Peace 1967 (Sergei Bondarchuk)- what an epic that deserves a transfer from 70mm film I agree with pretty much all of your choices, but I feel these would be some great additions as well.

Dear Professor Who, thank you so much! And your choices are all stellar. All of them. You won't get any complaint or objection from me, my friend. I love how you also mention upgrades of current DVDs, like SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER. I also love how you mention CC laserdisc titles. With the recent announcement regarding SHAMPOO and THE PRINCESS BRIDE, as well as the news regarding THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, I am gradually becoming of the view that the Criterion Collection is actively trying to get its LD titles into the current collection. So, with such a view that I espouse (without any concrete evidence mind you, and so my view is based purely on inference), I love your mentioning of CITIZEN KANE, SE7EN and PULP FICTION and TRAINSPOTTING. I will also throw in THE KILLER (as the CC DVD is OOP). I would also add NOSTALGHIA or DERSU UZALA or BOOGIE NIGHTS, AKIRA, GHOSTBUSTERS, SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT. By the way, I just learned that SHE'S GOTTA HAVE IT has not even been released on DVD?! If this is true, then I think I would have to mention this title the next time around. And your mentioning of NAPOLEON and THE APARTMENT and MILLENIUM ACTRESS. these are great choices and I agree 1000%. I should say that I am really happy to see SCARFACE and WAR AND PEACE and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Ever since I have started to make these videos, I have received a lot of great suggestions from many people, but I think this is the first time I have heard these titles! Fantastic!!!! I can tell you have excellent tastes in cinema, my friend. I am extremely humbled. Best regards.

While I don't work for Criterion and so I do not know for sure, it does still seem very likely that this film will come to Criterion one day (I hope). Anyway, please be well and stay safe and take care during these times. Cheers.

Have only recently discovered your videos on KZbin and love them all. Your enthusiasm for movies is inspiring. Having just watched your suggestions for additions, the following come to mind: "Underground" (1995) dir: Emil Kusturica. This is one of the most important Eastern European films of recent decades but is hard to find in a decent copy. The collection is not strong on British films. The best were produced immediately after the end of WWII, but were largely ignored once the new wave arrived. But now we see that they are as good as anything created in the trendy sixties. I would suggest "It Always Rains on Sunday"(1947) dir: Robert Hamer. It would be great to watch this masterpiece in a crisp print. My Latin American friends are always promoting The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema (1940s/1950s) but it is almost impossible to find any of these movies with English subtitles. A good start would be "María Candelaria" (1944) dir: Emilio Fernández. But what I would really like is a box of 3 or 4 representative titles to give us poor anglophones an idea of what all the fuss is about. Finally, a real long-shot. In the early 1960s the films of Leopoldo Torre Nilsson were much appreciated during a season of them at the British Film Institute. But since then he seems totally forgotten. I never see a mention of him anywhere. I would like to see a good print of one of his mature movies. Maybe Los Siete Locos (1973) but if not that, than another. Thank you for your consideration.

Hello and it is a great pleasure to make your acquaintance. Thank you so much for your kind words and for your very valuable time. It is very very much appreciated. And I love your suggestions. THEY ARE GREAT! It Always Rains on Sunday!!!!!!! And I love your suggestion about Maria Candelaria or other representative cinema from the 1940s-1950s cinema of Mexico. Of course the Criterion Collection has some very great examples of Mexican cinema after this period you mention, but I agree with you about the 40s and 50s. And Leopoldo Torre Nilsson! So I have not seen all of his works, but I did see for example the film Martin Fierro on VHS a long time ago. I am sure you have seen it also my friend! Finally, I agree with you about Underground. This has been released in Japan in decent Japanese releases, and I think it has also been released by the BFI as well, but I agree with you. Cheers for your really great comment my dear friend.

Hey Dasiuke..before I share my picks, I'd like to really express my appreciation for your videos...I am fairly new to the journey of appreciating cinema and most of the time, I feel my cinema brain is ill-equipped to process WHY I appreciate certain films. Watching your videos helps me understand why I enjoy these films and also helps me re-evaluate the ones I dismissed as being not to my taste...your videos were also the reason why I broke my bank account during this barnes and noble criterion sale...;) with that being said, I would like to see some Clint Eastwood films as I enjoy him more as a director than as an actor...films such as Mystic River or Gran Torino may be great additions to the Criterion collection...films such as Before the Devil Knows You're Dead or There Will Be Blood, I consider as modern masterpieces and may make great additions as well...
@DaisukeBeppu

Dear Edward Kim, thank you so much for your kind words. You have a great way of putting it... the WHY of watching films. If you don't mind, I will borrow that phrase from you! And I apologize for posting my videos during the very wonderful B&N sale!!! Now, you mention Eastwood, which I have neglected but not on purpose. I agree with you! This would be great for the CC. Mystic River is a personal favorite of mine, and I really love Laura Linney in that film in particular. I admit to not liking BETTER THE DEVIL... when I first saw it, but I have since seen it about 2 more times and I really love it now... Lumet films tend to do that to me. I don't respond to them at first and then over time they occupy my thoughts like nothing else. The same is true for PRINCE OF THE CITY and NIGHT FALLS IN MANHATTAN (and your comment reminds me that those titles would be great CC titles!). And you don't need to convince me at all about THERE WILL BE BLOOD. This film has so far not weakened with its relatively short age, and I expect that its power will continue as it grows older. Thank you, and please let us know if you have any further thoughts or suggestions! Best regards from Tokyo.

I would like to see Leone's Once Upon a Time in America even though I haven't even seen it, but it's pretty hard to find on blu-ray atleast in Europe. Lolita would be a good fit to the Criterion Collection. Also the German film Downfall would be a great addition, although I think they should've cut 15-20 minutes of the ending. Another great video Daisuke, have a great week.

We need a Takeshi Kitano box set. I would love to see Apichatpong Weerasethakul's CEMETARY OF SPLENDOR being released. I am very particular when it comes to slow cinema and I feel this is one of the best out there. Another film I am happy to hear of rumors floating around it coming to CC is Elem Klimov's COME AND SEE. A couple upgrades I am holding out hope for are LA STRADA and DO THE RIGHT THING.
@DaisukeBeppu
@DaisukeBeppu 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for reminding me that I have not yet mentioned having more Weerasethakul in the CC, but that would be most welcome indeed! I agree with you so much. And my goodness, you have planted an idea in my mind that I am now not able to shake: a TAKESHI KITANO box set! What a splendid concept. You know, it is my own personal hunch that COME AND SEE will be one of the final releases of 2018. We last got the October release announcement, so I am guessing that COME AND SEE might be a November or December release, since the rumors have been around for a while now and they are very potent rumors indeed. As for upgrades, those two are early CC releases, and so I agree with you. I also just recently rewatched the early CC DVD release of THE RULING CLASS, with Peter O'Toole, which I plan to do for my next 5 X Criterion. Have you seen it? It is so magnificent and filled to the brim with so many seemingly conflicting tones and ideas that it is nothing short of breathtaking. I would also add other early DVDS like Loves of a Blonde, or the Eisenstein box set (which is now sadly OOP), and Salesman... but I can go on and on!

I hope your hunch turns out to be true regarding COME AND SEE. Unfortunately I haven't seen any of those films you mentioned, but i have just added most of them to my FilmStruck watchlist! Yes! Thank you! I recall your comment some weeks back... and as you know there was some news about the film at Venice. www.labiennale.org/en/news/restored-films-venezia-classici So, I am so excited as this seems to suggest with near certainty that the film will emerge in the Criterion Collection. I am an admirer of the DAMNED and I find it to be quite disturbing and very, very dark. It is curious and wonderful that you mention MAHLER. I do have that blu ray. I would love to see more Ken Russell in the collection, and MAHLER would be a great, as would others like WHORE or SALOME'S LAST DANCE (am I right that these titles are not available? I think WHORE is on a DVD, but I don't have it. I should buy it).

Thanks as always Daisuke, i think that a blu ray set with the German Trilogy would have for me a similar impact of The Devils release to you...it would be awesome, The Damned has got very little home video and retrospective attention i think ... I will wait with fingers crossed too :) So the Mahler blu ray is good id i understand right? Here in Italy we have the dvd editions of Salome and Whore but i never see the movies nor the editions...(they are old old dvds from little labels so probably very poor quality) Waiting for your next video Daisuke!

I wonder if THE DAMNED will get a good release soon. It would be great to see, again especially because the later period of Visconti's output has been receiving more and more attention lately it would seem. Yes, the MAHLER release is quite good. And after we spoke last I looked online to find information about the DVD releases of other films by Russell. I am a great admirer of his work, and I love how his films have slowly but surely been getting great releases lately (such as Arrow's release of the great, great CRIMES OF PASSION, and Criterion's recent release of WOMEN IN LOVE). And so I hope this trend continues!

Dear Daisuke-san, thanks for highlighting "Three by Scorsese" laserdisc. I had bought the same disc back in the 80's. (natsukashi!) It was very interesting to find out the subject of the documentary short "American Boy", steven Prince, was cast later as the gun salesman in "Taxi Driver." As you clearly mention, this was not a Criterion release, but I always admire Criterion's efforts in bringing directors' early works/short films in the special features. Weren't you disappointed though, about the new release of "Sex, Lies and Videotape" blu-ray edition? It didn't include Soderbergh's wonderful student short, "Winston", which was included in the Criterion laserdisc box-set edition. Lastly, my hats off to your efforts and videos. I really enjoy them!

I have just gotten it in the mail and so I have yet to dive into sex, lies, and videotape, but it doesn't include "Winston"? You allude to the short film that was included in the marvelous CAV release of the film as a Criterion Laserdisc. So, this is unfortunate. It makes me happy that I have the laserdisc I suppose, but even more so it is a bit disappointing not to have that included in this recent release. And thank you very much for your kind words. I am sorry because they are very long all the time, and so I admire your patience as I try to get them shorter. Best regards!

I would not be surprised at all to see Lolita as the next Kubrick film to rejoin the Criterion Collection because of its history on laser and only because Warners is releasing a new 50th anniversary disc of 2001. Sonatine would be a great addition. The last Katsu Zatoichi film is available on DVD in the USA by Tokyo Shock and they just announced a Blu-ray for this year. I would also like to see a future video of your movie room and how you keep and maintain your massive collection of discs. By the way, I should also say that I love the list that you provided. I would actually really love to see some Criterion LaserDiscs and early DVDs back in the collection (a la the upcoming release of The Princess Bride), like Citizen Kane, the 1933 King Kong, Blade Runner, 12 Angry Men, A Night at the Opera, It's A Wonderful Life, Singin' In The Rain, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Wizard of Oz, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Casablanca, West Side Story, Ghostbusters (1984), Lawrence of Arabia, the first three James Bond films, Arsenic and Old Lace, Akira (the anime), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python's The Life of Brian, Jason and the Argonauts (gotta have some Harryhausen action in the Criterion Collection, we don't have much right now), RoboCop, This Is Spinal Tap, Evita, and one that was intended for LaserDisc but never made it onto DVD so far, Rob Reiner's A Few Good Men. Yes, I know, I am pretty much going full mainstream on this list of Criterions that need to be (back) in the collection, but I am of the opinion that Criterion should have all *all*, not some, but *all* of the very best films from all eras, from all generations, curated and finely crafted for release on physical media. Yes Criterion does do a huge service for lesser known films and filmmakers, but I think Criterion also needs to do that service for films that have been more or less neglected by the major studios, or worse, milked so dry that there's no point in making a millionth and seventh rerelease for. The other thing I think needs to happen is having Disney be part and parcel of the Criterion Collection. There's not a lot of animation and I think Criterion should play a much larger part in sparking the discussion of animation as a legitimate form of filmmaking as well as a legitimate art form. And the releases by Disney have left much to be desired next to what Criterion could possibly do with each of the films Disney has sloppily and haphazardly released, in both censored form as well as aggressively 'restored' form, as well as sloppy barebones releases with almost no bonus features to speak of for their lesser known films.

Dear BJ Wanlund, thank you for the great comment. You and I seem to think alike in that I too would love to see the remaining Criterion Laserdisc catalog return to the collection. I would also add the Voyager titles as well... as you may know already, there are some Voyager titles that are in the current collection, such as FOR ALL MANKIND. However, there are so many Voyager titles that are still laserdiscs, and so perhaps some others would be great... like the DEVO disc, or the TELEVISION TOYS Commercials disc, or the Charles and Ray Eames discs, or the Brothers Quay (2 volumes). Actually I have all but 2 Voyager LDs and so one day I hope to do a collection video on those as well. There is also SALT OF THE EARTH, which would be a great addition... As for your Criterion suggestions, yes I agree to all of them. I would also add (and you have already thought of these as well I should imagine), titles like SEVEN, BOOGIE NIGHTS, SCARAMOUCHE, THE PRINCE OF TIDES, NOSTALGHIA, DERSU UZALA, etc. And of course there are a number of others. Finally, yes, if there was some agreement reached between Criterion and Disney... why, that would be incredible. Thank you so much for your great comment. This has really gotten me thinking about the assortment of possibilities! Best regards.

Thank you! Magical Mystery Tour is one of my fave albums. But the movie is so strange and pointless to me. Early Scorcese isn't a bad idea, much like Kubrick's Killer Collection. (wink) Lynch, I kinda like how he's all over the place with studios and mediums. My fave of Dave's is The Straight Story, and the fact it's Disney seems to inject that family value that much more to the story. One I'd like to see Criterion do is Bob Fosses Lenny. It's somewhat touched upon in All That Jazz. But Lenny is such an important movie to the history of Lenny Bruce, free speech, Hoffman's performance, and Bob Fosses dedication and passion. So much could be supplemented to that movie to fully exploit it for historical and educational purposes. And the B&W style is so beautiful still. And sure enough, Death In Venice is a reality now! (well, almost...) Freaks as far as I know is still in release? Great movie, but don't think much more could enhance it? Political correctness and all would jump on Criterion for making them look more or possibly less disfigured than they really were. But for you Daisuke and others here, if you haven't seen Lenny yet, it's a movie that's sadly falling into obscurity, and is so important to this day IMHO. Should be in your collection already. :-)

I was quite frustrated as I would've picked up the Scorsese shorts that criterion released blu ray but I didn't because unfortunately they did not include who's that knocking at my door, for me personally a collection of short films just isn't enough for me to warrant a purchase as I have to be selective with my criterion pick ups as I am paying quite high prices. Lolita what an amazing pick I would kill for that release! Lost highway aswell would be incredible! Everything else by lynch in fact maybe even a lynch boxset. Some really cool and interesting picks here! Great video

Two more films that need the CC treatment: Jean de Florette (1986) Manon de la Source (1986) Directed by Claude Berri who, I was delighted to just discover, already has a film in the collection: #388, The Two of Us (1967). Question for Daisuke and others: Putting aside the fact that theoretically every film is worthy of the Criterion treatment, is there a film in the Collection you thought, "meh, they coulda waited on that until such and such was in the collection first." Aside from licensing, what do you think drives the urgency of publishing certain titles like The Princess Bride (a glorious edition) before, say, another Kurosawa?
@DaisukeBeppu
@DaisukeBeppu 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the question. I am sure that many people have their own views about films in the Criterion Collection that perhaps they are not fond of. I think that is the nature of a large collection like Criterion, but conversations like that are very healthy and reasonable. Also, I am not sure exactly what drives the decisionmaking process. I think though that these are ultimately decisions made by the people who work there, taking into consideration the available licensing and potential marketing, etc. Perhaps others here might be able to answer better than I can. Great question and I hope you are well.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Criterion releases some films of Werner Herzog? Films like Aguirre - The Wrath of God (1972) or Fitzcarraldo (1982) would be nice in that respect. Also in terms of great director-actor pairs, like Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski in this instance, I think this would be great. Les Blank’s feature documentary Burden of Dreams (1982) on the making of Fitzcarraldo is already an OOP Criterion DVD, and would make fine supplement, as well as Werner Herzog’s own documentary My Best Fiend (1999), which covers his ambivalent but thereby very fruitful relationship with Klaus Kinski.

This is a great comment... one day I hope to get into Celine and Julie Go Boating and OUT 1, because I hope to have a series discussing the films that appear on the current Sight and Sound "Greatest Films" critics poll list, and those films appear on such list. So if you don't mind I will save my specific comments for such an occasion. But if I were to make some comments here, it would be... CELINE AND JULIE...is a film that requires more than one viewing for me because it is quite confusing for me, but if I were to distill its essence as I see it, for me it is about stories and the art of storytelling, which can be placed upon the context of cinema and the issue of art and reality... it is irreverent and fresh and almost like a magical fantasy mystery film (but with the key relationship between these women to carry us through the tale quite wonderfully). And because of its structure I am constantly perplexed by it and love it. It is quite a labyrinth of a film and its structure of the narrative is quite refreshing in its confusing nature (which is a great quality to have). What do you think about the film?
@paulb111
@paulb111 6 жыл бұрын
I like the film because I like the two female leads and because I like all of the Paris location. The tram that ascends the adjoining steps-I believe they both lead to the highest elevation of Paris, that being the famed section known as Montmartre. I can relatively follow the story line but only up until a certain point. The story seems like a game, or a puzzle. I am used to more logical storytelling but that's not to say I want to brush this film aside. I want to follow the story and if the story goes into uncharted territory, I may be frustrated but that doesn't keep me from wanting to watch it again. As you point out, one viewing is clearly insufficient. What hooked me though is that long opening sequence in which we follow the two women, with one leading the other. Practically a star of the movie in its own right is......that house. Seemingly innocent and carefree from the outside, once set foot in, all notions of clarity are tossed out of the window. I can't elaborate much more than that, other to point out what YOU have written is what I would write. Thank you for expounding on this film and without further adieu, I think it's time to watch it yet again.
@DaisukeBeppu
@DaisukeBeppu 6 жыл бұрын
Paul, I love talking to you. You have such a great way of expressing things, much better than I do. You say the film is like a "game or puzzle". YES!!! And THAT HOUSE!!! YES!!! I agree! And I love your comment: "Seemingly innocent and carefree from the outside, once set foot in, all notions of clarity are tossed out of the window." Perfectly encapsulated. Now I really apologize because I was on purpose trying to make my earlier comment as vague as possible without giving away too much lest anyone who has not seen the film reads my comment. But I totally agree with you, and you are now making me very interested in trying to make a video about Rivette, or at least the Rivette films that I have seen. Thank you! And again, I am sorry that I have not yet addressed Masters of Cinema and in particular RO.GO.PA.G. It is coming, but I move at such a slow pace and so I really have to apologize. but please know and believe me when I say that I have not forgotten. Best regards, my friend.
@paulb111
@paulb111 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Daisuke and thank you for the nice words! I have to disagree when you suggest that my way of expressing things is much better than yours. Au contraire! For example, I could never conjure up the ideas you put forth when you write about Celine and Julie...."If I were to distill its essence, for me it is about stories and the art of storytelling, which can be placed upon the context of cinema and the issue of art and reality." ! The second half of that sentence is way too lofty for me to comprehend! But I love reading it! And further, your 'way of expressing things' produced these memorably descriptive phrases: "....it is irreverent and fresh and almost like a magical fantasy mystery film(but with the key relationship between these women to carry us through the tale quite wonderfully). And because of its structure, I am constantly perplexed by it(as I am)and love it(as I do). It is quite a labyrinth of a film and its structure of the narrative is quite refreshing in its confusing nature (which is a great quality to have)." So, Daisuke, I think we can put to rest the silly notion that you somehow fall behind me when it comes to expressing our thoughts. Whenever you are able to assemble a video wherein you discuss RO.GO.PAG., that will be just fine. Absolutely no need to apologize. I know you will get to it when you are ready and I thank you for that. In the meantime, I enjoy all of your video's, no matter what the subject is. A pleasure. Take care, my friend.

Yes!! I haven't seen his last film AROUND A SMALL MOUNTAIN with Jane Birkin. And I have only seen the film NE TOUCHEZ PAS LA HACHE only once (and I must see it again; thank you for reminding me!). But yes I saw HAUT BAS FRAGILE back in college, and it was very memorable (I think that this film is currently OOP?). And wow... HISTOIRE DE MARIE ET JUILEN is very excellent! Also there are the very interesting films VA SAVOIR and SECRET DEFENSE, etc. Yes, a couple years ago, there appeared to have been a bit of a "Rivette renaissance", in terms of upscale home video releases (blu ray etc.), but that seems to have slowed down in recent years. I hope it picks up, and that his 80s and 90s output gets released for North American audiences to enjoy. Oh, and JEANNE LA PUCELLE! Are you fan of this period of Rivette's work?
@frankswildyears1343
@frankswildyears1343 5 жыл бұрын
Daisuke Beppu Daisuke Beppu yes, I find this period of work Rivette's most compelling! As much as I love Celine and Julie, the rest of his 70s work was perhaps overstylized but worth watching and with the 80s he developed a different style that I find naturalistic and enthralling! it was very hard to find a digital copy of haut bas fragile for me but I finally did online! Thankfully in North America Cohen Media Group bought rights for 10 rivette films (1984 through 2003 so starting with l'amour par terre and going through the stunning Histoire de Marie te Julien) They have been slowly but surely restoring and releasing the films, the recent la belle noiseuse Blu-ray being from them but in April a 4K restoration of la bande des quatre received a world premiere as well! Here's hoping a Blu-ray will be out soon!

The scene in the music store is all muted. Then you know Kubrick wanted the color to pop in that scene. I can not wait for that!!! Freaks is an excellent choice for criterion. Yes the Limey I Don't know how that L got in there haha Yes Dawn of the dead Romero of course! would be the crterion halloween blu-ray of all time! A lot of the reason criterion was getting so many great movie s on LD is because the major studios were not investing in LD so criterion stepped up to the plate an d it was such a niche market compared to vhs but with blu-ray being so main stream criterion isn't needed like they were in the LD days. I just Don't get the desire to have a film like 2001 on criterion when the new 4k collector edition will be on UHD with every special feature you could imagine it will be the definitive disc like Lawrence of Arabia GodFather set BenHur Citizen Kane etc now criterion of Rebecca Traffic Dazed and confused were all great improvement over the first releases.

Oh gosh, I think Romero's DAWN OF THE DEAD on Criterion... with all the cuts of the film... this would be a monumental release. I don't know anything about the chances of such a release, but as I am prone to saying, "fingers crossed". You know, I totally get what you are saying about 2001,etc. And, there is an argument that I am sympathetic to, that is based on the notion that Criterion's resources are finite and limited, and thus Criterion should try to focus on releases of titles that have not been as prevalent or voluminous. But at the same time I think that Criterion could bring much to the table in the form of unique supplements. Now, I know that Criterion does not always get the best supplements released, but I would think that if it could release a so-called "big" title like 2001, it might be an occasion to see how Criterion could top itself. Anyway, that is how i see it. But, then again, it is tough because, like many others here, I would love to see Criterion focus on other more neglected films and bring those to the attention of the cinephile world once again. This is an ongoing discussion here and elsewhere, and it is a great one and important one... and your voice, Nathan, is really important here because you have a great way of putting how you feel about the issue. Thank you so much.

Not a Criterion news, but still a good news: US label Media Blasters/Tokyo Shock is releasing Shintaro Katsu's Zatoichi: Darkness is His Ally (1989) on Blu-ray in a few weeks! goo.gl/YuY5Cr

OH MY GOSH!! Jiro Hong!!! How are you my friend!! And yes, I just heard about this a minute ago!!! This is great news!!!!! Am I right in thinking that this is the first time that the '89 film will be released in North America? In any case, this is great news, and i cannot wait to hear what people will think about it. As you say, it seems to be scheduled for a release later this month (August 2018). Have you seen the film yet?

Can't say I'm qualified for a fan because I've watched only first four out of the entire series. Let's just say the first impression was good and he and I will keep in touch. (and I love jidaigeki in general.)

What about the Ghibli movies? Anyone would want that? You might think it animated but it much more then that.

Oh yes. I adore the Studio Ghibli films. I am not sure that they would realistically appear in the Criterion Collection due to licensing, but that does not take away from how great they are. Definitely.

@@DaisukeBeppu Thank you Daisuke for all the responses! Thought about it some more and I don't how it not a criterion "Sunset Boulevard" and "Wittnes for the Prosecution" is a must have as a part of the closet. Everyone knows and talks about "Sunset Boulevard" and yes it amazing, but also is "Wittnes for the Prosecution" I don't know if you ever suggested these in one of your videos, if so then I try and find it. I also wanted to ask only if you know, is there a way to get all of the Ghibli movies in one collection or you have to buy them separately?
