Yeah, two pretentious empty exercises in nihilism. At least HAPPINESS has a story and a few laughs.

Really pleased with the Val Lewton 2 movie release as well as Pandora’s Box. I bought the DVD box set of the RKO Val Lewton movies when it was released in 2005. This looks like the exact same special features from that DVD set (not a bad thing.)

Wow Gummo which I have seen is challenging but worth it I seen it as a teen so very curious how I feel about it as an adult,Pandora’s Box is my most anticipated everything about it ticks all the boxes.Demon Pond feels very October so will be a treat.On another note I would love to see 1995 Kids make its way on Criterion.

I'm especially excited to see Demon Pond this month, a film by Shinoda that I'm yet to see. His film Chinmoku is one of my favorites ever!

@@DaisukeBeppuThank you, Daisuke, you’re very kind. Love your channel! While it was great to see “Demon Pond” on the big screen, I’m happy to know that I’ll be able to pick up my own copy of it before long. Anyway, hope you enjoy the rest of your summer vacation back in Japan.

This was such a surprise to see Gummo amongst the October releases. I can recall many many years ago in my life seeking out these sort of alternative or acclaimed movies that not many people had seen and I came across Gummo. It seemed interesting to me so I remember watching it that one time and feeling really upset when I finished the film. What in the world had I just sat through? However, I never forgot the experience and since then have many more thoughts about the works of Harmony Korine. It will be intense to revisit this work all these years later as a grown adult. Could this one day mean Spring Breakers could get a Criterion release?!? I recall Chloe Sevigny being in Gummo. I wonder if one day you could have her on your channel and remind her of your connection. This reminds me of the Kids/Gummo connection and just thinking of the intensity of these films... Wow. As for the other Criterion October announcements, they all sound great as always and Pandora's Box is most catching my eye. I'm a big fan of Westfront 1918 and would definitely love to see more G.W. Pabst works. Usually Criterion does a good job with the October releases having some sort of overall 'horrific' element to them and this month in 2024 looks to keep up the tradition! Bravo again, Daisuke. Loved hearing you talk about the new release announcements as always. Hope you are having a lot of fun in Japan with your family when you are able! May you find that new Takeshi Kitano film on blu-ray, 4K or even DVD!!!! Thinking about you in Japan definitely has me thinking about Kitano films now. Thank you and cheers my friend! 🇯🇵🇺🇲📀

Pandora’s Box and the I Walked with a Zombie/The Seventh Victim set are the ones that look the most interesting to me. Thank you for talking about the October releases Daisuke, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and take care!

I'm really hoping with the Lewton titles that it'll open up the opportunity for Criterion to add in the other horror films. (In addition to the announced titles, they also have Cat People available.) My personal favorite, outside of Cat People, is The Body Snatcher, but I would love a box set of the Lewton horror pictures from Criterion.
@DaisukeBeppu2 ай бұрын
That is a very good point you raise. It would be a good opportunity to add such films to the collection.

Two movies I wish would come to the Criterion Collection are Lost in Translation and the Shawshank Redemption. I think the fact that especially The Shawshank Redemption still isn't in the Criterion Collection is a crime. While Lost in Translation is my favorite movie of all time, I believe the Shawshank Redemption is way too good of a movie not to be in Criterion.

@@DaisukeBeppu You're too generous to a film that wants nothing more than to indulge the "filmmaker"s vision, which is to prank people by having them imbue nonsense with meaning.
