@Tripod9648
@Tripod9648 3 жыл бұрын
their is just something so powerful about silence. Music has always been used as a way of conveying the tone of a movie. Music gives Battles a type of tension like no other, intensifying the fight, but scores are one thing but silence and repetitive noises are on a hole different level. U want to intensify or even traumatize the audience, then take away a score and replace it with complete silence. We Saw who effective that was with Infinity war. Who powerful and yet terrifying the scene of the Snap, was. Without Music Star Wars becomes an almost an uncomfortably realistic war film when it was meant to be a film about Adventure.

I wonder if they were using ambient sound. At 4:08 as Vader appears, he takes several steps which are barely audible, but he kicks a small piece of carbonised material which makes an obvious noise. That's totally hidden by the score.

I feel like a nerd knowing that a large portion of these sounds are not the original sounds but instead new ones being overlayed - both blasters being fired sound different and R2-D2 beeps differently as well as some explosions sound different. The alarm also abruptly changes and doesn't wind down.

Honestly, as much as I love John Williams's score, I think Star Wars without music would slap. It's interesting because you can actually tease out the cutaways that the mind can only digest with music, and you can start to see in your mind's eye pretty quickly that in order to make a truly compelling version of music-less Star Wars, you would have to frame some shots differently, and cut others in different orders or to different time signatures to maximize the gravitas. It helps me realize how much we actually rely on music to take us through a scene that wouldn't or couldn't play the way it does without said music.

Honestly? I... don't really think so. Yes, it would be remembered as groundbreaking in terms of its storytelling and would possibly still kickstart the whole wave of swashbuckling cinema... but I just don't believe Star Wars would keep that cult following through the '80s. I don't think it would have been reinvigorated like it actually was.

I read somewhere that Lucas was toying with the idea of filming Star Wars as if it were a documentaty in verite style. The lack of a score would be one element missing. So some people this may seem "better" and "more real" without the music, but remember -- you've already seen Star Wars with John Williams' score, and the sequence thus makes sense to you because Williams was there to communicate the emotional subtext when you originally saw it. Someone who had never seen Star Wars would be baffled by this sequence, because the music is not there to establish the tone of the film.
