The uneven quality of Phase 4 of the MCU post-Endgame has made for a bumpy ride. For every Black Widow (yeah, I know whatever), there's been an Eternals. For every Loki, there's been a Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Will that up-and-down swing of quality be the norm moving forward? Who's to tell? But, for now, at least we can revel in the fact that MOON KNIGHT RULES. Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke enter the MCU with one of the most distinct and thought provoking takes on a hero we've seen from Marvel in a long time and it brilliantly operates as it's own standalone thing mostly detached from the larger MCU. In doing so, Moon Knight is able to put its characters, themes, and emotions ahead of world building mandates that often bog these things down. The distinct creative voices of Mohamed Diab and Justin Bensen and Aaron Moorhead can be felt throughout the entirety of Moon Knight's six episodes giving it such a potent identity and especially, in the case of Mohamed Diab, authentic Egyptian representation. On top of all of that, Moon Knight beautifully and empathetically explores Marc Spector's battle with DID in a way lesser shows haven't. What makes Moon Knight such a beautiful entry into the MCU is that FOR ONCE one of these Marvel movies or Marvel tv shows took the time to focus on their characters and their emotionality in order to SAY something with the art being presented all while still delivering and exhilarating, mind-bending, action-packed, adventure. Moon Knight is the best MCU tv show and not only that, but it just might be the best thing Marvel has produced in this ongoing phase 4. Moon Knight is Perfect. Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Moon Knight review and explains why Moon Knight is perfect, Moon Knight ending explained, why Moon Knight is my favorite mcu movie in years, and what the mcu can learn from Moon Knight going forward! Enjoy this Moon Knight analysis!

I honestly have never been emotionally attached to any MCU character until Steven Grant

The other marvel shows rely too heavily on the MCU in my opinion. I didn’t feel like it was its own thing. You would have to watch the movie before and the movie before that to even understand what’s going on. But for moonknight, you don’t even have to watch a Marvel movie and TV show to understand what’s going on. It’s its own thing. Kind of nostalgic because it feels like the old marvel movies like Iron Man and Captain America.

It should be obvious to the MCU, that when you actually do something different and unique than the standard formula they have, people will be interested

In mythology, Osiris was killed by Set who split his body apart. Later his body was merged by Isis and he was "resurrected" and became the ruler of the underworld. A fractured man being reassembled, no wonder Osiris opened his gates in the Duat

I think the only problem with the show is the fact that I just wanted more. Another 20 minutes in the finale would’ve alleviated the rushed feeling it had. At the end of the day it’s a show. Use the additional time you have to add more time to hold emotions, give more insight and material to the phoenominal supporting cast, and give a bit of a longer epilogue to give us more time with Layla and Marc to talk about or at least hint about where they stand

I have DID, and Moon Knight has been a very special show for me. Not only it presents someone similar to me with sympathy, it's allowed me to open conversations about it with my friends other than "aren't you scared you don't remember"? Also, interacting with the fandom has been fascinating, seeing the way people talk about something so foreign to them, but which has been familiar to me all my life. It's also a much safer way to talk about it without online anonymity, without having to put myself in the vulnerable position of disclosing my DID and being treated as mentally ill, when usually I can just pretend I don't have it and people's attitudes about you are completely different and kinder when I do. I've seen people confused about how it's not obvious to everyone in Steven and Marc's lives what's going on with them, but I see people around me ignore all wild signs everyday, people are just like that.

One of my favorite things about the show is how it shows that child abuse does have a dramatic and definitive impact upon a person in adulthood. I have cPTSD and anxiety disorder from my child abuse and episode five really triggered me, I actually wish they had put a trigger warning on it because I was not expecting that. Episode five really hit so close to home for me and I actually had trouble coming down for a couple days afterwards because of how much it impacted me. Child abuse is not some thing a person can just “shake off” or get over because it’s just not that easy when your primary caretaker actively hates you and abuses you ( my mother is mentally ill and has never been stable in her mental health care.) Wonderful show and I’m glad it really does highlight that childhood abuse does impact a person into adulthood

I've seen reviews complaining that being an MCU property held the show back because it couldn't get as dark as it needed to, but I disagree. I think we often conflate darkness and brutality, and that the latter can often be a crutch to achieve the former without needing good writing and acting.

I loved Steven falling over after his 'superhero landing'. It was very in character for him, especially at that point in the show, and it was also hilarious! I was watching it with my family and we all laughed. I also found out later that it was improvised by Oscar Isaac, which is even better, and I think is just one of many testaments to how well Oscar understood all of the characters he played in this show.

There can never be too much Oscar Isaac on screen. So glad his entry into the mcu gave him some real complex, heartfelt material to deliver the kind of performance he’s capable of

As someone who has disassociative episodes from PTSD (not DID) and having my life disturbed by them? Having a character like Moon Knight means so much to me. I wish we had more characters like him portrayed like this.

Also I loved how Harrow was willing and ready to die the MOMENT he freed Ammit, for the evils he'd committed in her name and would continue to commit.

I want to bring up the symbolism behind choosing the name "Layla". It is a special Arabic name in the Arabic Poetry and Literature that you can consider it as an Arabic "Juliet". The perfect woman to love. There was a poet (Qays Ibn al-Mulawwah) aka Majnoon Layla (Majnoon means the one who is crazy in his love but also means the mentally unstable person). Majnoon's story with Layla was insane. Their relationship went back and forth due to Majnoon's inconsistent abnormal behavior towards Layla. However, their relation remained with great love and passion between them although they were separated many times.

For once I'm not going to be biased and say this is the best MCU series so far!! I know some people didn't like the fact that they didn't show Jack fighting scenes, but for me it just make his reveal in the post credit scenes perfect!

Although I’d love a moon knight movie, I think a second season would be much better. Moon Knight be as complex of a character as he is (especially if a second season would be fully fleshing out Jake Lockley) needs the format and time that a TV series gives to have deliver a competent continuation of his story. In my opinion, at least.

I definitely agree that this series went really hard on exploring Egyptian mythology. Especially since this is a character that kinda has heavy ties to it. It’s funny because when you’re watching things like this, you almost don’t feel like it’s an MCU show.

I feel like it should be mentioned that its important for Steven and mark to work together but not be “one” as that could be seen as saying fusion is the best way to deal with DID, (fusing identities) which I believe has a history of being problematic and ableist. Luckily (or maybe on purpose) moon knight doesnt do this and instead had Steven and Marc learn to be friends, coexist, and even become better than they were alone, rather than “cure” their DID by fussing them. I was really happy about the ending :)
