WandaVision is the first MCU tv show hitting Disney Plus. Kicking off Phase 4 of the MCU, WandaVision sees Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen reprise their roles as Wanda Maximoff and Vision as the two try to settle down only to find themselves living life through the decades via sitcoms. Week after week WandaVision continues to prove to us why it's one of the best projects the MCU has released thus far and despite all of the fan theories and speculation, what really matters is how the new MCU series services its characters and tackles fascinating themes of grief, trauma, conformity, the facade of American Suburbia and more. Want to know why WandaVision is so good? Griffin and special guest Zach from @ZachDoumit break down the series and its genius in this WandaVision analysis and video essay. I really appreciate how WandaVision was its own thing, being a character driven show instead of setting up the next Endgame. It really annoys me how some people are hating on the show because it didn’t do what they wanted. You can’t expect something like that in the first TV show in Phase 4.

I hate Wanda after this. She trapped and hurt hundreds of people and faced no consequences. “She was grieving” yes but that doesn’t make it ok to enslave hundreds of people just so you can play house. She should have turned herself in after the Hex finally came down. Face justice. Instead she’s living in the countryside in a cabin like it’s the end of The Incredible Hulk minus the bloody heart monitor watch.

Honestly this series showed grief correctly. If I had powers like her I’d maybe do the same. And even without powers, it’s kind of exactly what the mind does with trauma. It rejects reality ne we go into something we can handle. Even if it’s not real. Sometimes people even develop multiple personality disorders to take over trauma. I feel this show helped me feel like I am not alone in my own trauma.

Not to mention the portrayal of how depression and grief make us act. We are so blinded by our own pain that we often times inflict the same pain in others around us, without even realizing it. The town having her nightmares, being choked when she felt suffocated, it just shows how destructive we get during those times. This show is just amazingly sensitive and human, most of all, even though it may not seem like it as it's so full of magic and powers and whatnot. The humanity in it is very wholesome. I'm so glad the producers thought of such a good show to tell Wanda's story.
@airwaters
@airwaters 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly. People who don't see the show as that see life as only black and white and see people as only good or bad, when most, if not all, people are in a grey area. Mental issues, traumas, grief, depression are mostly mask by society as "not a big deal" "shrug it off" "move on", as easy as that sounds, it is not easy for someone in the position. Seeing the show tackle the stages of grief and all that through a tragic story of a superpowered being that can alter reality itself, it shows a great depiction that even if gifted, powerful, rich or otherwise, we can all reach serious damage both to ourselves and to others if we did not keep our truth in check. The show is a masterpiece and I always see it as an S-tier storytelling way above any MCU films. I don't mind any MCU shows having no awards for creative storylines, but for WandaVision, I want it to have the nominations and awards it deserves. It is so unique, creative, deep, relatable and grounded, and the show delivered that even with magic involved, which is really impressive.

Exactly! It helped me with my depression and anxiety too. That's why Wanda's my comfort character whenever I'm having one of my worse days. Wandavision was beautiful, and Monica was right, if we were in Wanda's shoes, we would've all done the same thing. If we had the power to bring back our loved ones, most of us would without hesitation. I also liked how this show had focused so much on Wanda's mental health, because especially during these tough times, mental health is important.

Then, as the show progressed, I would look at the ads like they were a friend with a secret; one that I understood yet wanted to find out more about. The best thing this show has done, and that weirdly enough no one seems to be talking about, is that it gives fans reassurance that these projects are made by fans themselves. They know what it’s like to spend hours in front of the TV exploring these fantasy worlds to escape the real one, or maybe even deal with the real one. We hear so many people say “this film/show/character has helped me through a lot” and I feel like outside our fandom circles, that is still seen as an insane statement made by people who can’t distinguish fiction from reality. This show shows our favorite pastime and passion as therapy, it shows a character who uses it as her only link to a semblance of normalcy. This show is a love letter to fans saying “Thank you for allowing our passion to become yours.” The tagline of this show should be “Art heals.”, which is such an important statement in a time where many people are just sitting at home devouring this content when they’re supposed to be doing something that “ actually matters”. Well, art matters. It’s not just a distraction from actually important things. Art heals.

There's a lot to catharsis to the ending that people didn't get to feel due to the fact that were so immersed in their own theories. The story is not about Wanda becoming the Scarlet Witch & discovering herself in her power, that's THE bonus. However, the real core of it all is how it began in the first place... Due to her suffering after all the trauma, she lost herself because she had no one. Everyone returned to somebody or had a home to go back to, she had nothing but herself. The key is to reduce it to it's most simple yet more profound emotional fiber which is that a proper goodbye is healing enough. Wanda never had a proper goodbye she now got it. There was never need for any special guest to come & help her save the day because she never had the chance to share her suffering with anyone & again that's the reason why she hit rock bottom. She managed to get past her suffering on her own, it's all she ever needed & in the process she discovered herself beyond her understanding.

Truely alone, with no one to comfort her in her lowest point, Wanda the momma cat hisses at the intruders that approach her melancholy state. Who are they? Are they here to take away her precious dream warmth? Its the only home she has right now. They cant take it. So she warns them. Threatening to retaliate. Sad momma cat just needs some love and care. When you hit your lowest point you are open to the greatest change (u know what im referencing). I genuinely never expected to get attached to this show as much as I did. I thought this would be just a silly adventure self aware sitcom style show that changed a decade every episode. Hell Wanda and Vision weren't characters I normally paid attention to since they had so little screen time and I was more invested in other Avengers. I did cry when Vision died twice and I was absolutely heart broken for Wanda but it's because I'm often empathetic to loss and pain. But this show was a huge surprise and as much as I laughed and enjoyed the silliness of sitcom premise, I also cried and felt anger throughout the show so many times. Seeing Vision being deconstructed and pulled apart like he was something to be studied was where I genuinely felt sadness and anger cuz to me I saw him as a human being despite being an android and seeing him being referred to as it or even having the word THE so loudly or even have Hayward mention the amount of money he's worth felt wrong and cruel and it's why I felt no sympathy when I rewatched the scene of Wanda having his men point their guns on him because he truly doesn't deserve the right to say what is right and wrong. Wanda is also a character I've grown an attachment with because at first I was more attached to Natasha but now with Natasha gone I've had myself be more attracted to Wanda and it made me realize how much grief and sadness she was going through. Most of the episodes especially with episode 8&9 I just wanted to jump into the screen and just hold her and tell her we understand your pain. We want you to get better🥺

Thanks for making this video. I remember being more confused than intrigued when I heard that there would be a show featuring Wanda and Vision in the sitcom style coz I didn't know what to expect. Then I started watching it and I absolutely loved the series as it was a breath of fresh air in the MCU for me. I wanted new characters, new stories, new adventures and some weird shit from Phase 4 and the show gives all that. It's not perfect(in truth nothing in the world is) but I will never forget how my parents remembered I Dream of Jeannie while watching Episode 3 over dinner with me. It made me go through all emotions. It was funny, but it was also scary, tense and emotionally moving and both Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen are great too. Keep in mind they have to do sitcom acting from 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's,90s and 2000s and flex their dramatic acting chops too. I get that there will be people who don't like the series and that's perfectly alright but I am happy that Marvel took a leap of faith without knowing where they would land with WandaVision.

nah this is wrong and the whole lot of people who say this just didn't understand what was the meaning of the ending. Wanda is nor validated. At the end, she is basically a hated monster that is forced to live in exile, ALONE, wanted by the police and feared by civilians. What Marvel is saying at the end with monica is: "yes, she is bad, BUT everyone would try to bring back their loved ones if they had the power and not everyone would give their perfect world up".
@DrakeVagabond
@DrakeVagabond 3 жыл бұрын
@@vokdmso9898 There's a huge line between simply grieving over the loss of loved ones and enslaving and torturing an entire town. Based on Wanda's established character, she should want to pay for her crimes and get much-needed help. Not choosing to be seen as a monster by everyone beyond this incident. This isn't the "whoops, sorry. My bad" situation the show making it out to be.

Wanda is one of the best and tragic character in the MCU. Some people say Thor was but Thor wasn't treated as a monster or a walking weapon. Thor was loved and even had fans on their Earth. Tony even said that they don't grant weapons a visa when she referred to Thor. In each film Wanda losses so much. Age of Ultron. Her parent and Brother. In Civil War, her freedom. In Infinity War she was forced to kill Vision trying to do what's best for everyone only for Vision to be killed again in front of her. At the end of Endgame, everyone got a happy ending. Thor even abandoned his duties to Valkyrie so he can go on adventures while Wanda, had nothing left.

Except for the fact that Agnes could've just had that talk with Wanda when she arrived in Westview... there was no need for her to play along being the nosy neighbour she didn't gain anything from it. It worked when the audience thought she wanted Wanda to have children but it turns out she didn't want the children she just wanted her powers which she could've tried to take from the get go.

The way I see it, there's no reason for Wanda to willingly tell Agatha what is going on, and as it was revealed, she couldn't even remember how it happened, Agatha probably saw the mess that is Wanda's psyche and tried to untangle it by playing along, stirring the fantasy to her own agenda without Wanda realising it. She goaded Wanda into having children to strengthen Wanda's attachment to the hex, so that she would choose to give up her power in exchange for her fantasy. Agatha also needs Wanda to use her power in order to absorb it, it seems that she can't just simply extract it, otherwise she would've done it in her basement where Wanda's magic doesn't work.

I think agnes wanted to lay low and see what spells wanda was using so she could go learn them. But wanda didnt use any spells. It was all instinct? This is why I don't like WandaVision's version of Agatha Harkness. They should have let her become a mentor for Wanda, an actual friend and having her best interest in mind. They still could have let Agatha had a dark background history, but just let her be good. Knowing that in the comics, the point of Wanda having Agatha as her "fairy godmother," basically, was to let her have chances to experience many things without destroying herself in the process. Agatha Harkness has always been the sole matron/maternal figure for Wanda despite the erasure of her memory of her children TO DEFEAT MEPHISTO. The MCU should have let Agatha remain as such, not a villain.

Why do you have to make me cry with this video... Ahhh... Truly unbelievable we got to this time wherein we witness an MCU project/story unfold with (perhaps) the most deeply explored narrative and interestingly, fully-fleshed out characters that Marvel has made so far (at least, for me), with unique navigation of the plot creatively and wonderful character arcs. No words could suffice with how perfect this show is.

I'm "that guy" who was getting wore out on the MCU's House Style of filmmaking and storytelling. I'm a fan overall, but it just wasn't hitting for me like it used to. And the fact that I find the fanbase a bit...MUCH at times kinda made me bitter towards the franchise. I really try not to let a fanbase ruin things for me (if I did I would hate everything), but I couldn't help but let the relentless stan culture around the MCU annoy me. Hey, I'm human. I originally had no interest in these D+ shows. I just felt like it was content overload. It just felt like way too much. And I made up my mind these show would be safe, cheap, and lazy...a way for Disney and Marvel to continue their pop cultural dominance without effort. And sure, it IS a way to continue their dominance...but it wasn't lazy. I clicked on episode 1 on a whim just to give it a shot because no matter my initial reservations on things, I always give them a shot. And I applauded the first episodes commitment to the sitcom style. It wasn't just a cute gag. It was clear not only was there genuine appreciation for those old shows, but that the choice in narrative was really hinting at something more meaningful. WandaVision is probably my favorite MCU offering since GotG Vol. 2 (probably an odd take, as that film is semi divisive, but I love it because it's a genuine indie dramedy that was somehow greenlit by Marvel and Disney) and one of the best entries in the series as a whole. It tells a rich, human story while also giving audiences the usual dose of MCU stylings they've come to expect - yet it never feels obligatory or forced or lazy. The show got me invested in the franchise again. So bravo Disney, your hooks weren't free from my flesh for long, lol.
